Melendez (22-4) is just 1-2 in his last three bouts, but the two losses were in title fights. He hasn’t competed since suffering a second-round submission loss to Anthony Pettis back in December. Alvarez (25-4) is fighting in the UFC for just the second time. He lost his debut to Donald Cerrone back in September, but he was a longtime Bellator lightweight champion.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Melendez is the favorite in tonight’s contest, as he is getting odds of -185 to win. Alvarez is getting a money line of +150 to win. This fight is the co-main event of UFC 188 on Saturday and will take place from Mexico City Arena in Mexico and air live on PPV at 10PM ET.
This fight features two pretty similar fighters. Both men rely on their striking to win, and both have very solid technical striking ability. Melendez may have more power in his strikes, but Alvarez should be the stronger of the two if this fight turns into a grappling contest. That may be the smarter way for Alvarez to go. He seems like he can mix up his striking and wrestling better than Melendez, but would be a little slower to the punch.
