McGregor (17-2) was scheduled to face champion Jose Aldo in the main event, but Aldo suffered a rib injury last week that forced him out and put Mendes (17-2) in. This fight will be five rounds for the interim title, but the matchup is just as intriguing as the original. McGregor hasn’t lost since 2010 and is 5-0 in the UFC. He is a very cocky fighter that is drawing a lot of interest and possible money for the UFC. Mendes is a little quieter, but just as talented. He is coming off a win over Ricardo Lamas in April. His lone two losses in his career are to Aldo, including a five-round decision loss back on Oct. 25.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, McGregor is favored to win this fight, as he is getting odds of -185 to prevail, while Mendes is being given odds of +150 to win. This fight will be the main event of UFC 189, which takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday at 10PM ET on PPV.
McGregor is a fighter that talks a lot, but can back it up. He is a dynamic striker that has a long reach with his hands and feet. He has won his last three by KO and he has shown great takedown defense. Mendes is a wrestler that has developed powerful striking in his hands. However, it would be unwise for him to try and keep this fight standing. McGregor is likely to have an edge there. Mendes will need to use his wrestling in this fight to fatigue McGregor and keep him out of striking range. The longer this fight goes, the more Mendes should have the edge.
