Lawler (25-10) is the new champion in the division and he is making his first title defense. He fought four times in 2014, winning his last three, including a split decision to claim the title in December. MacDonald (18-2) fought three times in 2014, going 3-0 with three solid performances. His last loss was actually a split decision loss to Lawler back on Nov. 16 of 2013.
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, MacDonald is actually favored to claim the title on Saturday night, as he is getting odds of -175 to win, while Lawler has been given a money line of +145 to prevail. This fight will be the co-main event of UFC 189, which takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday at 10PM ET on PPV.
MacDonald has been someone that has been groomed to be a champion for years. He has been training with Georges St. Pierre, the greatest UFC welterweight in history, his whole career and has a similar style, but is more explosive with his striking. Lawler is a powerful striker that can KO anyone with a punch or kick and his grappling has improved, allowing him to stay off his back. In their first fight, MacDonald seemed tentative to mix it up with Lawler, which cost him the fight. Look for a more aggressive challenger on Saturday.
