Cormier (17-1) was originally scheduled to defend his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship against Jon Jones tonight. However, Jones was busted for failing a doping test, which cancelled the fight. That’s where Silva (33-7) stepped in, taking the fight on just two days notice. This bout will be a three-round non-title fight at 205 pounds. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Cormier is the clear favorite, as he has odds of -500 to win. Silva is listed with a money line of +350 in the fight. These two meet up tonight at UFC 200 as part of the main card, which begins at 10PM ET on PPV. The event will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Cormier is the 205-pound champion and he has won his last two fights since suffering a decision loss to Jones in January of 2015. Cormier last fought in October of last year, picking up a split decision win over Alexander Gustafsson. Silva was the UFC middleweight champion for a number of years before losing the belt in 2013. He is 0-3 with 1NC in his last four fights, as he is coming off a controversial decision loss to Michael Bisping last February. Despite the recent struggles, he is still one of the greatest UFC fighters in history.
Silva always has a puncher’s chance. He is one of the fastest with his hands and feet. However, he literally has had no time to prepare for Cormier, who is an Olympic-caliber wrestler with a great engine. Cormier was training for the biggest fight of his life, so he is likely to be aggressive and use his wrestling to toss Silva around. If Silva ends up on his back, he’s not likely to be able to get up. Look for Cormier to dodge the early storm from Silva and control the bout with his grappling.
