There was a lot of buzz coming into the fight that this contest could go really quick or could go the distance. It turned out to be quick, as dos Santos finished off the champion in a little over a minute from the Honda Center in Anaheim.
According to oddsmakers, dos Santos had a money line of +155 on Saturday to win the championship. That means a wager of $100 on Junior will pay out an additional $155.
The fight started with both fighters feeling each other out and eventually after a few exchanges, dos Santos landed a big overhand punch that caught Velasquez in the ear and sent him crashing. Velasquez said the punch threw off his equilibrium, and that allowed dos Santos to follow up with a few big punches on the ground that knocked out the champion.
With the win, the UFC now has three Brazilian champions with dos Santos, middleweight champ Anderson Silva, and featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
