2012 Updated NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship Odds: Johnson Favored
By Drew Sharper

(TheSpread) – The NASCAR Sprint cup Series will be getting underway later this month. Here is an updated look at the odds to win the season-long title in 2012.

According to oddsmakers, Jimmie Johnson is now the favorite to win the Sprint Cup Championship with 9/2 odds. Other short odds to win are Carl Edwards (5/1) while six other drivers have 8/1 odds to win the championship.

Prior to last season, Johnson had won the last five Sprint Cup titles. He finished sixth last year, 99 points outside of first place. Johnson had just two wins on the year, which kept him from contending down the stretch.

Edwards actually finished tied with Tony Stewart for most points in the series, but lost the championship on a tiebreaker. Edwards had only one win in 2011, but led the series with 19 top 5’s and 26 top 10’s. Edwards has never won the Sprint Cup Championship.

Among the drivers with 8/1 odds is Stewart, who claimed his third Sprint Cup Championship last season. His other titles came in 2002 and 2005. Stewart won five of the 10 Sprint Chase races, which allowed him to take home the season title.

Another driver with 8/1 odds is Jeff Gordon, who finished eighth in 2011. Gordon ended a lengthy winless streak last year by picking up three victories. He has four Sprint Cup titles to his name, with the last coming in 2001.
