Dover 400 Preview
By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

After two weeks of sleeping on their own pillows in Charlotte, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams hit the road again as they travel to Dover, Delaware for this weekend’s FedEx 400 which when over will be the end of the first-half of the regular season.

With Carl Edwards winning last week’s Coca-Cola 600, there are now nine drivers with wins which should be good enough to get them into the Chase when the lineup is set after race No. 26 at Richmond. That means there are seven Chase positions available with 14 races to go until the playoff field is set.

This is the second season of the current Chase format and you can see that the drivers are applying several different strategies. For the drivers with wins already they’re comfortable and trying to go all out for another win. Their crews are trying radical strategies to make the car faster to get wins and if they fail, so what, they’re making the Chase anyway. When Jimmie Johnson spun out and crashed into the inside wall Sunday night to finish 40th, he just shrugged his shoulders and said it was no big deal. Everyone who has a win right now has that luxury to be relaxed for the next 14 weeks because they’re in.

However, it’s those winless drivers that are stressing a little more right now. They know it’s hard enough to beat the likes of Kevin Harvick and Johnson on a weekly basis, so while they want to win, they also have to try and get as many points as possible to for the chance that a few drivers will still gain entry into the Chase. Martin Truex Jr. has the second most points in the series, but is in 10th position for the Chase because of no wins. He should get in regardless of not winning, but then you have others that have been up and down like Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne that are still winless. Jamie McMurray is having a great year so far in 11th-place, but isn't comfortable. Ryan Newman, Aric Alimirola and Paul Menard sit 14th-16th in points, but are no where near being comfortable. The top four drivers outside looking in are separated by 24 points -- Clint Bowyer, Danica Patrick, Greg Biffle and A.J. Allmendinger.

Within the next 14 races, there are a couple of races that could serve as wild cards for smaller teams like last season when Allmendinger won on the road course at Watkins Glen and Almirola won at Daytona. Neither of those drivers would have made the Chase without those wins. However, this week’s race at Dover doesn’t fit that criteria because it is usually won by an elite team, and in most cases, the most elite of all, Jimmie Johnson.

In 29 career Dover starts, Johnson has won a track-record nine times on the high-banked 1-mile concrete paperclip. The track was built in 1969 and got to witness all the greats like Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson and Dale Earnhardt, but it’s Johnson who stands alone as the best all-time. He’s won three of the past six Dover races, including this race last season. It’s because of that dominance that he should be considered the favorite this week and supplant Harvick who has held that that status at every non-plate track.

Gordon has to be thrilled to see Dover because he won there in the fall for the fifth time in his career. In 44 career starts, he’s had an 11.4 average finish. He should be feeling some confidence this week because of finishing third at Bristol in April which was his best finish of the year. Although Bristol’s layout is only a half-mile, there are similarities to Dover because of the banking and concrete and past results have shown those who have done well on one seem to have success on the other.

The Bristol winner was Matt Kenseth and he should be expected to run well on Sunday going for his third Dover win. The Joe Gibbs Racing stable has things figured out big time now with a win in the All-Star Race and also in the Coca-Cola 600. Denny Hamlin, Kenseth and Edwards all have wins now and JGR is looking for another one to try and get Kyle Busch in the Chase. Even though Busch missed the first 11 races of the season, NASCAR gave him an exception that if he wins a race and is within the top-30 in points, he can participate in the Chase. The No. 18 looked very fast last week and Dover has traditionally been a place Busch fares well at with two wins over his career.

Brad Keselowski won at Dover in 2012 and was runner-up in both races last season, and he runs just at well at Bristol over his career showing another correlation. His teammate, Joey Logano, has six straight top-10 finishes going at Dover, including fourth-place last fall. Both drivers should be fighting for a top-five finish this week.

On the other side of things, we have Harvick who has never won at Dover in 28 starts. Last season while in similar form to how he’s running this year, Harvick managed very average finishes of 13th and 17th between the two Dover races. He did lead 184 laps at Bristol earlier this year, but finished 38th. You never want to cross Harvick off your list of candidates to win, but this is a track where you might be okay leaving him off a betting equation.

Top-5 Finish Prediction:

1) #48 Jimmie Johnson (5/1)
2) #20 Matt Kenseth (12/1)
3) #19 Carl Edwards (14/1)
4) #24 Jeff Gordon (10/1)
5) #2 Brad Keselowski (6/1)

Drivers to Watch - Dover
By Sportsbook.ag

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks
Sunday, May 31st – 1:15 p.m. EDT
Dover International Speedway – Dover, DE

The FedEx 400 is the first Sprint Cup race in Dover before the AAA 400 in the fall and first attached its name with the non-profit organization, Autism Speaks, in 2007.

The race was first run in 1971 and was originally a 300-mile race for two years before being a 500-mile race and moved to the current format in 1998. Since the change, Jimmie Johnson (2002, 2009, 2012, 2014), Kyle Busch (2008, 2010), Matt Kenseth (2006, 2011) and Tony Stewart (2000, 2013) have each one more than once with Jeff Gordon (1996, 2001) being the only racer to win in both lengths.

With Johnson and Gordon’s wins here, Hendrick Motorsports now has eight career victories from their athletes and four more than any other group. The one-mile, oval track will feature 24-degree turns and a concrete surface which typically features speeds in the low to mid 120 MPH range on average for the victor.

Let’s take a look at the entrants for the week and find some racers who could take the checkered flag on Sunday.

Drivers to Bet

Kyle Busch (15/1) - In his first race back, the All-Star Race, Busch was solid with a sixth-place finish amongst some of the best in the sport and he followed that up by improving his pole position of 17th to a finish of 11th in Charlotte last week. Busch has always enjoyed running on this track and has two career wins here while posting the third-best driver rating (105.5). In his 20 races, he has four DNF, but in the other 16 has finished in the top-10 13 times and besides his two victories owns another seven top-five showings. Busch will continue to get back into the swing of things and should shortly be competing at his usual elite level.

Martin Truex Jr. (14/1) - Truex Jr. owns a mere two victories in his 345 career races, so his fairly low odds for a victory may seem off, but he does have one of those wins here (2007) and is on pace to have his best Sprint Cup Series finish as he currently sits in 10th in the standings. He has just two double-digit finishes over his 12 starts this year and is running hot as he comes off his best race of the year when he led 131 laps in Charlotte, eventually falling to fifth in the pack. He knows how to navigate this track as evidenced by his two past pole wins and has added another seven top-10s on top of his 2007 win. Truex Jr. has been the best racer this year without a win and although it doesn’t happen often for him, one should be coming very soon.

Jeff Gordon (15/1) - Gordon is by far the most experienced driver in the field this week as his 44 visits to Dover are 12 more than his next closest competitor, Matt Kenseth (32). He has an average finish of 11.4 in that time and has 25 top-10s, 18 top-fives and five victories; with his latest coming last year at the AAA 400. He hasn’t earned a win just yet in his farewell season, but has owned the lead plenty of times and has finished in the top-five at three of his past six races. Gordon may not be at the level he once was, but he has the fourth-fastest green flag speed (144.169 MPH) here in his career and should be able to dot the top of the leaderboard throughout the day.

Greg Biffle (75/1) - This is one of Biffle’s favorite tracks as he is the fifth-best racer here according to driver rating (97.4) and has grabbed a win at both the FedEx 400 (2005) and AAA 400 (2008). He has 517 career quality passes (fourth-most) when at Dover and also ranks top-five in average green flag speed (144.050 MPH) and fastest laps run (435). Biffle is coming off his best stretch of the year in which he has placed in the top-13 at each of the past four races, winning the Sprint Showdown and coming up just short in Charlotte with a runner-up performance. The 45-year-old has 19 career Sprint Cup wins and could surprise many this week in Delaware.

Clint Bowyer (75/1) - Bowyer is another racer who has had tons of success in Dover and in 18 appearances owns 11 top-10 finishes, but has not been able to add to his eight career wins when at this venue. It hasn’t been a great 2015 campaign for the 35-year-old, but his 92.5 driver rating in Dover (eighth-best) should allow him to do better than expected when all is said and done. Look for Bowyer to add to his solid resume at this track and compete for his third top-10 of the year.

Driver Handicaps: Dover
By: Jeff Wackerlin
Racingone.com

MRN.com's detailed notes and statistics to help you set your fantasy racing lineup for Sunday's FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway.

Who's HOT at Dover

• Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with nine wins and 2,976 laps led (*Note: The No. 48 will appeal their P1 penalty and the Dover pit stall penalty will be deferred until the appeal is heard).
• Clint Bowyer is the only driver that has finished in the top 10 in the last eight races.
• Jeff Gordon, who won last fall, leads all drivers with an average finish of 5.0 in the last five races.
• Matt Kenseth has finished in the top 10 in the last three races and in 11 of the last 14, including a win in this event in 2011.
• Kyle Busch (making second points-paying start of the season) has finished in the top 10 in eight of his last 10 starts dating back to his second win in this event in 2010.
• Joey Logano (6.7) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (8.8) each rank in the top five in average finish in the last six races (same right-side tire code).
• Brad Keselowski has four top five-finishes in his last five starts, including a win in the 2012 fall race.

Who to Keep an Eye On at Dover

• Kevin Harvick had the dominant car last fall at Dover, leading 223 laps before a cut tire sent him to pit road. Harvick will be back in the same car he led 96 laps with at Texas Motor Speedway in April.
• Johnson, Logano, David Ragan, Jamie McMurray, Austin Dillon, Danica Patrick, Denny Hamlin, Casey Mears, Greg Biffle, Jeb Burton, AJ Allmendinger and Aric Almirola each participated in the open test at Dover earlier this month. Allmendinger, Hamlin, Logano and Patrick also took part in the Goodyear Tire test.
• In the last two races of the season, Martin Truex Jr. has had a contending car for the win, combining to lead 226 laps. He is also a previous Dover winner.
• Dover has been one of Tony Stewart's best tracks since 2013, posting an average finish of 7.3 in three starts, which includes a win. He will be back in the same car he scored his only top 10 of the season with at Bristol Motor Speedway.
• Kyle Larson posted an 8.5 average finish in his two Dover starts last year during his rookie season. His best finish of the season - and last top 10 - came at the other concrete track, Bristol Motor Speedway, in seventh.
• Carl Edwards, who has one Dover win, will be making his first track start with Joe Gibbs Racing after scoring his first win with the team last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
• Johnson (128), Harvick (96), Kurt Busch (45), Keselowski (27) and Logano (19) were the only drivers to lead multiple laps at Texas earlier this season with the same left-side code that will be run this weekend at Dover for the first time.

MRN.com Staff Picks

Jeff Wackerlin: Martin Truex Jr.
Pete Pistone: Jimmie Johnson
John Singler: Joey Logano

Driver Notes - Ordered by Top 20 in Average Finish (More than one start) in Last Five Races at Dover

Stats are for Dover unless noted

Jeff Gordon: Is coming off fifth win and fourth top five in his last five starts. Gordon has a series-high 555 quality passes at Dover and is second among all drivers in laps led (2389). This weekend, Gordon will pilot the same car (chassis No. 907) that he finished 18th with at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March.

Jimmie Johnson: Leads all drivers with nine wins with his most recent coming in this event last year. Johnson leads just about every statistical category at Dover and was one of the drivers that participated in an open test there earlier this month. This weekend, Johnson will debut a new car (chassis No. 937) in the FedEx400 Benefiting Autism Speaks.

Joey Logano: Is one of two drivers that have finished in the top 10 in the last six races. Logano tested earlier this month at Dover and took part in the Goodyear Tire test.

Clint Bowyer: Is the only driver that has finished in the top 10 in the last eight races. Bowyer's last six starts have come with Michael Waltrip Racing where he has a 7.2 average finish.

Kyle Larson: Posted an 8.5 average finish in his two starts last year during his rookie season. Larson finished sixth last fall and has started seventh or better in both races.

Brad Keselowski: Has finished in the top five in four of his last five starts, including a win in the 2012 fall race. Keselowski is the defending pole winner and finished second in both races last season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Has finished in the top 10 in four of his last six starts. This weekend, Earnhardt will return in the same car (chassis No. 905) that he finished 43rd with after suffering a tire failure at Phoenix International Raceway in March.

Tony Stewart:
Last of three wins came in this event in 2013. Dover has been one of Stewart's best tracks since 2013, posting an average finish of 7.3 in three starts. This weekend, Stewart will return in the same car (chassis No. 827) that he finished sixth with at another concrete track, Bristol Motor Speedway, marking his only top 10 of 2015.

Kevin Harvick: Led a race-high 223 laps from the pole last fall en route to a 13th-place finish after cutting a tire. Last year he posted a 15.0 average finish in his first two track starts with Stewart-Haas Racing. Dover is one of five tracks Harvick has yet to win at, but does have 12 top 10s in his previous 26 starts with Richard Childress Racing. This weekend, Harvick will return in the same car (chassis No. 884) that he led 96 laps and finished second with at Texas Motor Speedway in April.

Kyle Busch: Will be making his second points-paying start of the season at one of his best tracks based on top 10s (13). Busch has finished in the top 10 in eight of his last 10 starts dating back to his second win in this event in 2010.

Martin Truex Jr.: Finished in the top 10 in his first two track starts with Furniture Row Racing last season. Dover is the site of Truex's first career Cup win and has finished in the top 10 in eight of his 18 starts. In the last two races of the season, Truex has had a contending car for the win, combining to lead 226 laps.

Denny Hamlin: Finished fifth last year in this event for his sixth top 10 in 18 starts. This weekend, Hamlin will look to improve upon his best finish of fourth at Dover after testing earlier this month at the track and taking part in the Goodyear Tire test.

Carl Edwards: Won the 2007 fall race for one of 12 top 10s with Roush Fenway Racing. This weekend, Edwards will make his first track start with Joe Gibbs Racing after winning last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Paul Menard: Finished 10th in this event last season for second top 10 in 15 starts. This weekend, Menard will return in the same car (chassis No. 487) that he most recently finished fourth with in a points-paying race at Auto Club Speedway.

Matt Kenseth: Has finished seventh or better in his last three starts. Kenseth has finished in the top 10 in 14 of his last 18 starts dating back to his first of two wins. His last four starts have come with Joe Gibbs Racing where he's combined to lead 84 laps.

Kasey Kahne: Finished ninth in this event in 2012 for his only top 10 in six starts with Hendrick Motorsports. This weekend, Kahne will drive the same car (chassis No. 896) that he finished fourth with at Phoenix International Raceway in March.

Kurt Busch: Finished 18th last season in his first two track starts with Stewart-Haas Racing. Busch's last of eight top 10s in 29 starts came in the 2011 fall race when he won the race driving for Team Penske. This weekend, Busch will pilot chassis No. 828, which is a former Danica Patrick car that will see its first laps of the season

Greg Biffle: Finished ninth in the 2013 fall race for his only top 10 in the last nine races. Biffle will look to get back on track at Dover, where he has two wins, after testing earlier this month at the track. Biffle is also coming off his best finish of the season, second at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Aric Almirola: Only top 10 came in this event in 2012, his first track Cup start. Almirola does have a Truck Series win and Dover and he tested earlier this month at the track.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: Has yet to finish in the top 10. Stenhouse's best finish came in the 2012 fall race, in 12th.

#14-Tony Stewart: Chassis No. 14-827: This car debuted in July 2014 during the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Stewart used it to qualify sixth, but in the race the car was persistently loose and it finished 17th. It was a reversal of fortune for the car, for in its lone test prior to Indianapolis it excelled, as Kevin Harvick drove it to the fastest speed of anyone participating in the Dec. 9, 2013 test session at Charlotte (N.C.)Motor Speedway. Chassis No. 14-827 next raced at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, where it had a quiet weekend, qualifying 22nd and finishing 18th. The car returned to Charlotte in October where it made its third career start, qualifying a strong fourth but finishing 21st, bedeviled by a tight-handling condition. Its last start of 2014 came in November at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, where in qualifying it set the fastest lap in a stock car at a 1.5-mile oval when Stewart drove it to a lap of 26.985 seconds at 200.111 mph. It was the first time a stock car surpassed the 200 mph mark on a 1.5-mile oval. The car performed admirably in the race, finishing 11th. The car sat idle until April 2015 when it appeared at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. It was a solid effort with the sixth-place finish at the concrete oval being the car's best among its five career starts. Chassis No. 14-827 returns to the concrete with this weekend's race at Dover.
#24-Jeff Gordon: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 24-907 for Sunday's race. It was then put to use in March 2014 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where she started 22nd and finished 21st. It raced two weeks later at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, where Patrick started 27th and finished 14th. Chassis No. 828 last raced at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May 2014, where Patrick started seventh and finished 10th. Chassis No. 828 was prepared and carried numerous times throughout the rest of the 2014 season as a backup car, but will see its first laps of action since then this weekend at Dover (Del.) International Speedway.
#47-A.J. Allmendinger: Chassis 499: "We're bringing the same car AJ raced at Phoenix International Raceway and Kansas Speedway," crew chief Brian Burns said. "So, it's fairly new and only its third race. We debuted it at Phoenix and lost a motor in practice. AJ drove from the back of field and overcame bad track position to finish 17th. We also had our jack man Mike Klein go out with an injury mid-race and he's our pit coach as well. I feel pretty good about this car. We're hoping for a solid weekend."
#48-Jimmie Johnson: For this weekend's event, crew chief Chad Knaus has selected chassis No. 48-937, which is a brand new Chevrolet SS. The backup car is 48-824, which last raced at Pocono Raceway in June 2014.
