Ragan on pole for Ford 300
November 17th, 2007

Homestead, FL (Sports Network) - David Ragan won the pole for Saturday afternoon's Ford 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The No.6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford circled the 1.5-mile oval in 31.129 seconds (176.472 m.p.h.).

The pole victory was Ragan's second of the season and second of his Busch career. His first career pole was in April at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Starting alongside Ragan will be 2007 Busch Series champion Carl Edwards, who posted a time of 31.312 seconds.

The drivers championship has been locked up for a couple of months by Edwards and the No.60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford team and the owner's championship will be clinched by Richard Childress Racing and the No.29 Chevrolet team when the car starts the final race.

It was Edwards' first Busch Series championship and the fourth Busch owner's title for Richard Childress. It is the 11th overall title for RCR which includes six Nextel Cup wins and one Craftsman Truck Series championship. RCR drivers have won 12 times this season - six by Kevin Harvick, two from Clint Bowyer and four by Jeff Burton.

This is just the second time that the driver and owner titles have been split. In 2003 RCR with drivers Harvick and Johnny Sauter won the owner title while Brian Vickers won the driver's crown.

Dave Blaney (31.334) and Harvick (31.389) will make up row two as "Cup" drivers took the top-five positions.

Sam Hornish Jr. qualified sixth and was the only non-Nextel Cup driver in the first four rows.

The race is scheduled to drop the green flag at 4:30 p.m. (et).

Burton finishes Busch season with fifth win
November 17th, 2007

Homestead, FL (Sports Network) - Jeff Burton captured Saturday afternoon's Ford 300 Busch Series finale at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The No.29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet crossed the finish line 1.718 seconds ahead of Mark Martin.

The victory was Burton's fifth of the season and 27th of his Busch career. Burton along with Scott Wimmer teamed up in No.29 Chevy to win the owner's championship for 2007.

"It's been a great year for RCR...Scott Wimmer's done an incredible job and this is a great way to up the season," said Burton.

Rookie David Ragan brought the 43-car field to the green flag for 200 laps of racing, but series champion Carl Edwards led the first lap sliding underneath the pole sitter.

Edwards held the lead for just seven laps before 2006 Busch Series champion Kevin Harvick grabbed the top spot away from him.

Numerous caution flags slowed the early portion of the race, but it was evident that Harvick, Dave Blaney and Casey Mears had the best working cars. After 50 laps they were running first, second and third.

Blaney continued to put on the pressure and on lap 60 took over the lead. He built his margin to 3.062 seconds a dozen laps later as Harvick couldn't keep pace.

But night would fall on the 1.5-mile variable-banked speedway and the conditions changed.

Mears began to fade and Burton's No.29 Chevrolet got better. Burton cracked the top-five and by lap 80 was in third place behind Blaney and Harvick.

After a Matt Kenseth spin on lap 85, Harvick's pit crew did the job and got the No.21 RCR Chevrolet back on the track ahead of Blaney. Burton came in third and stayed there with youngster Steve Wallace and all-time Busch Series wins leader Martin fifth.

Harvick was still the leader at the mid-point of the 200-lap event, but the race was slowed again by multiple caution flags.

Sixty-five laps to go and Burton was second to Harvick after passing underneath Martin for position. He caught Harvick on lap 138 and on the next lap made the move for his first lead of the race as Harvick was complaining to his crew of a "tight" race car.

There was one more pit stop for the leaders left and they began on lap 159 with Mears the first in. Martin came in with 39 laps to go and leader Burton finally pitted four laps later.

Ragan inherited the lead, but when he tried to get down to pit road hit slammed the entry wall, bringing out caution flag No.12. For Harvick, the stop was a disaster as a tire got loose and it forced the No.21 to restart at the back of the field.

Burton was the leader with 25 laps to go and behind were Martin, Edwards, Stephen Leicht and Greg Biffle. But they were in the middle of slower lapped cars and it allowed Martin to get up even with the leader. Edwards joined them in what looked like would be a wild finish.

Burton and Edwards seemed to like the top of the track, while Martin was using the bottom. Martin got almost even with Burton again, but got loose and Edwards took advantage to grab second place.

The fight between Edwards and Martin allowed Burton to open up a half-second lead on Edwards. Martin regained composure and got back to Edwards' rear bumper. But without a mistake from Burton, or a caution flag, they were fighting for second place only.

Five laps to go and Burton's margin was 1.547 seconds and he cruised to the checkered flag for win No.27.

The first race of the 2008 Nationwide season (former known as the Busch Series), is scheduled for Saturday, February 16th.
