Ford 400 preview
By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

As Don Merideth would start to sing, “Turn out the lights, the party’s over”, we would all get a sense at home that the Monday night football game was truly over. In NASCAR’s Sprint Cup circuit, not only is dandy Don singing, but the fat lady has joined him in a duet signaling Good Night to the season.

Jimmie Johnson has a 141-point lead going into this Sunday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The only driver still breathing in the Chase is Carl Edwards, as all others have been mathematically eliminated. Even if Edwards were to win and lead the most laps on Sunday, a 195 point day, Johnson merely needs to finish 36th or better. Edwards says that anything can happen, which is true, but not with Johnson.

The ten-race “Chase to the Championship” is all about consistency, and Johnson once again showed that no one is better. In the nine races leading up to this weeks race, Johnson has three wins, six top 5’s, and eight top 10’s for an average finish of 4.7. That is how you seal the deal! While Carl Edwards has been impressive himself in his own right, he would have had to have been nearly perfect to take the hardware from Johnson.

Johnson will now become only the second driver to win three straight NASCAR Championships tying Cale Yarborough. There doesn’t look to be any hope for the rest of the circuit in stopping him from winning four in a row either. The only thing that can slow Johnson down might be a sagging economy and General Motors.

At the beginning of the season, Johnson could have been had to win it all at 9/2 odds. Even as the Chase began with Kyle Busch as the favorite, Johnson still could be found with great value. His season win total was 6 wins under -200 the favorite. He just won his 7th race of the season last week. In a matchup of who would have the most season points at the conclusion of the 2008 season, Johnson was a -150 favorite over Jeff Gordon.

This week in Homestead, Johnson could be considered a candidate to win, however, the last four seasons of the race called the Ford 400 have been by Roush Ford’s. This is a high banked fast 1.5 mile track, but it’s configured much differently than the traditional 1.5 mile tracks like Charlotte and Atlanta. The teams that have done well there in the past do have distinction of doing well on the more familiar D-shaped or tri-oval tracks. Carl Edwards would fit the bill as the leading candidate to win because he meets all the requirements.

How Johnson treats this race is a tough question. He’s shown in the past that he doesn’t like to sit back and collect points. He scoops everything he can and never settles for an average finish. This situation is a little different from other races because of what is at stake. By having to finish 36th or better to ensure a win, he could lay back for a while, wait for all the jalopies to wreck themselves, and then guarantee himself the title and be able to race all out. It would be kind of nice to see a driver win the race and Championship to close the season out.

Edwards is going to be extremely difficult to beat this week, but a live Vegas underdog that should be able to keep up is Kurt Busch. The team has really being getting it together lately and the combination or new motors and enthusiasm within the organization is something that stands out. We know Kurt Busch can run well at Homestead. He won there in 2002, clinched his Championship there in 2004, and ran 2nd to a dominant Matt Kenseth car there last season.

Let’s go with a Dodge to win this week’s Ford 400 driven by a former Ford driver who once won the Ford 400, followed by four Ford drivers that have combined to win four Ford 400s.

TOP 5 Finish Prediction:

1) #2 Kurt Busch (20/1)
2) #99 Carl Edwards (5/1)
3) #16 Greg Biffle (10/1)
4) #26 Jamie McMurray (25/1)
5) #17 Matt Kenseth (12/1)

The two other major NASCAR series will be crowning Champions as well this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Trucks will race Friday and Johnny Benson leads by only 3 points. Benson is a former Grand National series Champion while Hornaday will be going for his 4th Truck Championship.

In Saturday’s Nationwide Series race, Clint Bowyer holds a 56-point lead over Carl Edwards for the title. All Bowyer has to do to clinch the title is finish 8th or better in the race.

Glance at the 12 drivers in the Chase for the Cup
November 12, 2008

A glance at the 12 drivers competing in NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup championship heading into this weekend's race at Homestead-Miami Speedway (in order of points):

DRIVER: Jimmie Johnson

CHASE POINTS: first, 6,561

CAR: No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet

TEAM: Hendrick Motorsports

POSITION CHANGE: None.

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 7

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 2nd

LAST WEEK: And we're done. Barring some sort of catastrophe, expect the season finale in Miami to be a four-hour coronation as Johnson joins Cale Yarborough as the only drivers to win three straight points titles. Johnson bounced back after some trouble in Texas with a dominant win in Phoenix for his seventh victory of the season.

CHASE CHATTER: ``I'm really excited about next week, and there's no need to do anything stupid ... `` Johnson said. ``But at the same time, how cool would it be to win out? I still think we can do that. I'd love to do that.''

DRIVER: Carl Edwards

CHASE POINTS: second, -141

CAR: No. 99 Office Depot Ford

TEAM: Roush Fenway Racing

POSITION CHANGE: None

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 4

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 4th

LAST WEEK: Edwards needed a win and another slip-up by Johnson to make it interesting heading to Miami, but got neither. Edwards struggled to get control of his car all day in the desert and managed just a fourth-place finish. It was his 18th top-five this season, but he'll likely have to wait until next season to win a points title.

CHASE CHATTER: ``I was hoping Jimmie had forgotten how to shift gears or something on those last couple of restarts,'' Edwards said. ``Those guys did a good job and we did the best we could. They're just on it right now.''

DRIVER: Greg Biffle

CHASE POINTS: third, -168

CAR: No. 16 3M Ford

TEAM: Roush Fenway Racing

POSITION CHANGE: None

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 6

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 1st (three times)

LAST WEEK: Almost assured himself a third-place finish in the points title by taking 11th in Phoenix. Another solid performance in Miami and a stumble by Edwards could help him match the second-place season he put together in 2005. The way Biffle ran during the Chase - taking the first two races and staying in the top five in points all the way through - means he'll be a force to reckon with next year.

CHASE CHATTER: ``We'll just learn from everything that's happened this year, go out and try to win at Homestead and get ready for 2009,'' Biffle said.

DRIVER: Jeff Burton

CHASE POINTS: fourth, -269

CAR: No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet

TEAM: Richard Childress Racing

POSITION CHANGE: None

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 9

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 3rd (twice)

LAST WEEK: Will almost assuredly finish the season in the top five, but once again was unable to capitalize on a mid-Chase surge that briefly lifted him to second in the standings. Put together a ho-hum ninth-place at Phoenix that will make him a bystander while Johnson makes a run at history.

CHASE CHATTER: ``We were really tight at the beginning of the race, but found a way to have a pretty decent car at the end of the race,'' Burton said. ``Our pit stops were fantastic. The AT&T crew gained us spots on pit road all night long.''

DRIVER: Kevin Harvick

CHASE POINTS: fifth, -328

CAR: No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet

TEAM: Richard Childress Racing

POSITION CHANGE: Plus 2.

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 7

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 2nd

LAST WEEK: Remained one of the Chase's most pleasant surprises by finishing seventh in Phoenix, his 18th top-10 of the year. Through 35 races this year he is one of only two Chase drivers - Clint Bowyer is the other - to not record a DNF.

CHASE CHATTER: ``It was a good day for us though, lapped cars were a little problem out there,'' Harvick said. ``But we're happy with an overall good day for us.''

DRIVER: Clint Bowyer

CHASE POINTS: sixth, -335

CAR: No. 07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet

TEAM: Richard Childress Racing

POSITION CHANGE: None

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 2

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 10th

LAST WEEK: Likely won't repeat his third-place finish of a year ago, but continued a decent Chase run with a 12th-place finish at Phoenix.

CHASE CHATTER: ``We were a lap down most of the day and finished 12th,'' Bowyer said. ``That's something everyone on this team should be proud of.''

DRIVER: Jeff Gordon

CHASE POINTS: seventh, -410

CAR: No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet

TEAM: Hendrick Motorsports

POSITION CHANGE: Minus 2

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 9

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 3rd

LAST WEEK: Engine trouble at Phoenix sent him to a 41st-place finish and left him with just one more chance to avoid a winless season. Won't be easy at Homestead, where Mission No. 1 will likely be making sure Johnson gets around the circuit safely to wrap up his third straight points title.

CHASE CHATTER: ``This is just the kind of year we've had, you know,'' Gordon said. ``Every time we get the car running good, something happens. It hasn't been engine trouble. That's the only engine problem we've had, I believe, all year; or two years. It's unfortunate.''

DRIVER: Matt Kenseth

CHASE POINTS: eighth, -470

CAR: No. 17 DeWalt Tools Ford

TEAM: Roush Fenway Racing

POSITION CHANGE: None

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 8

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 1st (2007)

LAST WEEK: Had a string of three straight top-10s end with a 15th-place finish at Phoenix. The race was a microcosm of Kenseth's season, he battled handling issues, a flat tire and a late-race accident but kept fighting. If he can repeat his win last year at Homestead, he'll lock up a spot in the top 10 and a trip to New York for the season-ending banquet.

CHASE CHATTER: Kenseth was not available for comment after the race.

DRIVER: Denny Hamlin

CHASE POINTS: ninth, -471

CAR: No. 11 FedEx Toyota

TEAM: Joe Gibbs Racing

POSITION CHANGE: Plus 3

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 3

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 3rd (twice)

LAST WEEK: Has a chance to finish an up-and-down season on a high note in Miami after a fifth-place finish in Phoenix, his ninth top-five of the season and his 20th top-10 finish.

CHASE CHATTER: ``It's a good points day for us - we got ourselves back in the top 10 and that's what it's all about right now,'' Hamlin said.

DRIVER: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

CHASE POINTS: 10th, -474

CAR: No. 88 AMP Energy-National Guard Chevrolet

TEAM: Hendrick Motorsports

POSITION CHANGE: Plus 1.

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 8

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 13th

LAST WEEK: Didn't run like he was just playing out the string at Phoenix. Challenged in the top five most of the day before ending up sixth.

CHASE CHATTER: Earnhardt Jr. was not available for comment following the race.

DRIVER: Kyle Busch

CHASE POINTS: 11th, -481

CAR: No. 18 M&Ms Toyota

TEAM: Joe Gibbs Racing

POSITION CHANGE: Minus 1

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 3

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 20th

LAST WEEK: The regular-season champion lost his chance at a title early in the Chase and refocused on simply finishing in the top 10. Will need a strong run in Miami to get a trip to New York, however, after losing ground despite an eighth-place finish at Phoenix.

CHASE CHATTER: ``We battled tight-loose all day and never really got the Pedigree Toyota right,'' said Busch. ``We've still got some work to do on our flat-track program. We'll just go to Homestead and hope to finish the season off on a positive note with a good finish.''

DRIVER: Tony Stewart

CHASE POINTS: 12th, -502

CAR: No. 20 Home Depot Toyota

TEAM: Joe Gibbs Racing

POSITION CHANGE: Minus 3

CAREER HOMESTEAD STARTS: 9

BEST HOMESTEAD FINISH: 1st (twice)

LAST WEEK: This isn't exactly the way Stewart envisioned ending his long run at JGR. ``Smoke'' ran in the top 10 almost all day at Phoenix before getting involved in a pair of late-race incidents that relegated him to a 22nd-place finish.

CHASE CHATTER: ``Whatever could go wrong there at the end, did,'' said Stewart. ``We went from running in the top 10 to getting wrecked - twice.''

Ford 400 PreQ

All that Jimmie Johnson needs to do is finish in the top 36 to record his third consecutive championship. Johnson should do much better than that as he ranks as the No. 1 driver on our PreQ forecast. He has been on a stellar run during the Chase for the Championship posting three wins and eight top 10s through the first nine races with his poorest finish being 15th place. Johnson has run well at Homestead-Miami Speedway especially since the track reconfiguration. In seven career starts he has posted five top 10s including two straight top 10s. There is one negative for Johnson this week as he does not need to race very hard to get the win. If he is comfortably in the top 10 he may just ride around to finish the race. Still, the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet team will be ready to celebrate and will do all they can to ensure a solid run.

The one driver chasing Johnson, Carl Edwards, has a chance to catch him albeit a slim one. Edwards needs all sorts of bad luck for Johnson to occur, which has yet to happen, and then must finish in the top 3 if not win the race outright. Edwards does run well at Homestead but has yet to win at the track. In four career starts he has posted three top 10s with an average finish of 8th place. Edwards could very easily put his #99 Office Depot Ford in victory land in the Ford 400 but it is doubtful it will be enough to bump Johnson from atop the point standings.

Along with Edwards, Roush Racing has all four drivers in the top 10 at Homestead and for good reason. Roush has dominated at this track since it was erected winning five the nine races. We're going to take a stab and predict that David Ragan will post his first career win this weekend at the track. Ragan, in his second season, barely missed out of the Chase and has a sizeable lead over the 14th place driver (Kasey Kahne) entering the season finale. Ragan has been running very well during the Chase races recording five top 10s with just one finish outside the top 20 in the nine events. He should be in store for a big day at Homestead after finishing in 10th place last season his first start at the track and only one of three top 10s last season. Look for the #6 AAA Ford to be in victory lane this weekend.

Of all the Chase drivers the one that has to be the most disappointed has to be Kyle Busch. Busch was dominant through the first 26 races of the season winning eight events with just five finishes outside the top 15 as he entered the championship hunt ranked as the No. 1 driver. Busch quickly fell deep into the Chase field with three straight finishes outside the top 25. He has not been able to recover although he has at least posted three straight top 10 finishes moving to 11th in the point standings just 11 back of 8th place. It is important for those drivers that are near the tail end of the top 10 as only those drivers that finish in the top 10 in the standings get to attend the NASCAR banquet in New York at the end of the season. Busch must perform much better than he has in the past at Homestead in order to make the trip as he is averaging a lowly 33rd place finish in his career with a top finish of 20th place. Busch is on a bit of a role but still gets the buyer beware label heading into the season finale.

Elliott Sadler has had a season to forget. A handful of times throughout the season he has been running extremely well only to have something happen to him relegating him to a poor finish. Other times he has just not had a car that has been able to compete. He has struggled mightily over the last 12 races finishing in 20th place or worse 10 times with a pair of top 10s mixed in the middle of those events. Sadler has not had much luck this season nor has he had much luck at Homestead in his career averaging a 27th place finish with his last five finishes outside the top 20. Sadler should be better next season in the #19 Stanley/Siemens Dodge (if the manufacturer is still in the series) but should not be in anyone's lineup for this event.

Ford 400 HOT! Sheet

He may not be on a whole lot of rosters, but Jamie McMurray has been one of the best drivers to have recently. First of all, he has gained bonus points for leading laps in five of the last eight races. The team has really clicked in the last three weeks. As you can see on our chart, he has an average finish of about 4th place. He’s put together back-to-back 3rd place showings, which were season highs for him. We think the momentum continues this weekend. His teammate at Roush Fenway Racing, David Ragan, has been just as hot. He has posted five top 10s in the last seven weeks. In the two weeks in which he didn’t, he still had a solid 13th place showing at Martinsville and 11th at Texas. His average finish in this stretch is exactly 9th. He is coming off of a race at Phoenix in which the right pit calls were made that leaped him from 30th at the start to 10th at the end. This is only his second trip to Homestead, but last year he finished 10th. He’s definitely a safe start.

We can’t do a season finale edition of this column without mentioning Jimmie Johnson. The soon-to-be three-peat champion was the most expensive, but most valuable, fantasy option for most of the season. One of the more amazing stats is the fact that he has led the most laps in 10 of the 35 races so far, including 6 of the last 11. His average finish in this long stretch is 4th place. In his previous two championship clinching races here, he was 7th and 9th. Look for him to end strong again.

He will always be referred to as a Daytona 500 winner, but that was about all that Ryan Newman could come up with this season. He limps into his final race in the #12 car with just one top 15 in the last 11 races (13th – Dover). Even when things look positive at the start, something happens that pushes him backwards. That was the case last week at Phoenix when he started 6th, but ended up 10 laps down in 34th. We advise that you wait for his change of scenery next year.

Martin Truex, Jr. is also going to be driving in his final race before joining a new team. Kind of. It was announced this week that DEI is merging with Ganassi/Sabates Racing to form a new four-car team. He could use some of the new equipment because last week at Phoenix, the #1 car overheated after just 27 laps, which forced them to go home in last place. It was the second time in the last seven races that engine trouble resulted in a DNF. In the last two races here, he was 6th and 2nd, so we can’t say sit him. But, he gets our final “buyer beware” label of the season.

Reutimann captures first Cup pole for season-ending Ford 400

Homestead, FL (Sports Network) - David Reutimann recorded his first career pole in the Sprint Cup Series by taking the top starting spot in Friday's qualifying for the Ford 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Reutimann, the driver of the No.44 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing and a native of Zephyrhills, FL, rounded the 1.5-mile oval in 31.462 seconds (171.636 m.p.h.).

Reutimann's first pole came in his 63rd start. He becomes the fourth first- time pole winner in the series this year, joining Travis Kvapil (Talladega), Paul Menard (Daytona) and Patrick Carpentier (New Hampshire).

"I think we sat on the outside pole at Bristol and came close a couple of other times," Reutimann said. "It feels really good to see the 44 up there, and it shows all of the guys at the shop and on the team that they've been working hard all year long and doing a great job."

Scott Speed, in just his fifth Sprint Cup start, secured the outside pole with a time of 31.494 seconds. Speed and Red Bull Racing teammate Brian Vickers switched rides for this weekend, with Speed moving over to the No.83 Toyota, and Vickers taking the wheel of the No.84 car. Vickers will start 20th.

Roush Fenway Racing teammates Matt Kenseth (31.500) and Carl Edwards (31.502) will start on the second row.

Edwards, currently 141 points behind Jimmie Johnson, will start the season- finale 26 positions ahead of the championship leader.

"That was a good lap for us," Edwards said. "We're not the strongest qualifier, so a lap like that was impressive."

If Johnson finishes 36th or better at Homestead, regardless of Edwards' performance, he will join Cale Yarborough as the only drivers to win three consecutive Cup championships. Yarborough captured his titles from 1976-78.

"The lap was okay, and I felt good about the lap," Johnson said. "Unfortunately, coming to the green flag, I lost a bunch of time and I didn't take the green flag with the speed I needed into those long straightaways. I think I lost most of my time there."

Johnson will start 30th.

Kevin Harvick and David Ragan will make up row three.

Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, Reed Sorenson, and Martin Truex, Jr. will start seven through 10th, respectively.

Other notable drivers and their starting positions include: Tony Stewart (13th), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (22nd), Ryan Newman (29th), and Jeff Gordon (37th).

Ken Schrader, Max Papis and Sam Hornish, Jr. did not qualify.

Homestead will mark the end of Stewart's 10-year run with Joe Gibbs Racing as the two-time Cup champion leaves the No.20 Toyota to drive for his own team - Stewart Haas Racing - in 2009.

Newman, the 2008 Daytona 500 winner, will make his final start in the No.12 Dodge as he departs Penske Racing at the end of the season to join Stewart's new team.

Homestead is also one last chance for several drivers to end their season with at least one victory. Most notably is Gordon, who has won a race in 14 consecutive years. However, Gordon has not scored a victory since October 2007 at Charlotte. He has yet to win a Cup race at Homestead, but did take the checkered flag for a Nationwide event there in 2000.

Kenseth and Harvick are also winless this year. Kenseth has won at least one race in the previous six seasons, while Harvick has recorded a victory in the last three years.

The green flag is scheduled to drop Sunday around 3:45 p.m. (et).

Ford 400: Wrapping It Up
By: Brian Gabrielle

Last Week: Jimmie Johnson all but locked up his third consecutive points title with a win in Phoenix, and we had him at +450, which gave us our fourth straight correctly predicted race winner. For the week, that meant an 84% profit: we netted 0.42 units on 0.5 units wagered. For the season, we've profited 5.95 units on 39 units wagered, a return of 15.3%. We've also given you a winning week in 25 of 34 events. (Note that if you'd eschewed the relatively conservative betting pattern we outline below, and simply bet one unit per wager we recommend, last week you'd have won 2.5 units on three units wagered; for the season, that would leave you with a profit of 22.23 units on 124 units wagered, a return of 17.9%. But there's a bit more week-to-week risk associated with that strategy.)

Take Carl Edwards (+250), 1/6th unit. Wow, these are some mighty low odds. I guess Vegas really thinks Edwards is going to win at Homestead. So do I. King Carl dominated the past two times out at the 1.5-mile cookie-cutter tracks of Atlanta and Texas, and while Homestead/Miami doesn't feature exactly the same configuration, it does have similar transitions from its slightly-less-steep turns to its flat straightaways. In other words: loose racecars win. Edwards drives a loose car as well as anyone, and Roush tends to dominate at this track. Given the fact that he's pretty much definitely not going to win the Chase, Edwards can drive free and easy and win this event.

Take Greg Biffle (+600), 1/6th unit. I'll also take The Biff, who won here in '05 and '06 in the old car. Biffle posted top-10 finishes at Atlanta, Texas and Charlotte over the past month, and that should carry over very nicely to this race.

Take Kyle Busch (+800), 1/6th unit. Finally, I get the sneaking suspicion maybe we haven't heard the last from the younger Busch, who's quietly been very consistent since starting off the Chase so disastrously. He has to wonder what might have been, but seems to have come out of his shell-shocked condition, having finished fourth, 29th, fifth, sixth and eighth the past five weeks. Did someone mention needing to be able to drive a loose racecar? Busch is the king of heavy-steering tracks, and loves to be right on the edge. He's got a chance Sunday.

Ford 400 Odds and Predictions
by Christopher G. Shepard

Barring a DNF, mechanical failure, and a Carl Edwards win in the Sunshine State, Jimmie Johnsons' 267-lap victory parade for his third consecutive Cup Series Championship begins this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Homestead Speedway in Miami, where all the No, 48 car has to do is finish better than 36th.

Gamblers who placed a futures wager on Johnson to win his third Cup in a row would have received between 4/1 and 7/2 odds.

Who will win the Ford 400?

The only things hotter than Johnson in NASCAR right now are my picks. I won for the second week in a row and look to close out my NASCAR season picking the Homestead winner. But, then again, Johnson has been en fuego in the past nine (eight top-10 finishes) Chase races where the No. 48 car has a sterling average finish of 4.7 and a driver rating of 118.7; his highest of the season. Johnsons' dominance in Chase races has been uncanny and this year was no different with three wins and six top-five finishes.

Homestead will be a different kind of race for Johnson. As Johnson said earlier this week, "I really think where we are in points is going to allow me to go to Homestead and take a little pressure off my brain this week," Johnson said. "We can just go down and relax and get in the car and set it up, just do what we know how to do."

That is as clear a message as a gambler can get. When was the last time Johnson relaxed a bit in a race? Johnson didn't say it but he said it. He'll be riding around Homestead with very expensive three car motorcade (Earnhardt, Jr., Gordon, and Mears) insuring Johnson a place in NASCAR history and Hendrick Motorsports winning their eighth driver championship and 11th team championship across NASCAR's three series. Despite this (and logic) Johnson is one of the favorites listed at 5/1 to win; a sure loser.

Another pick likely to get a lot of play but one I am shying away from is the race favorite, Carl Edwards at 5/2. However, I do like Rousch Fenway Racing's chances to take the checkered flag on Sunday. I love RFR's dominance at Homestead; they have won five of the past six series events in South Florida. They also excel at 1.5-mile tracks.

Pick! Greg Biffle, 5/1 (No. 16)
