Dodgers' Kemp, Schmidt leave game

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp and starting pitcher Jason Schmidt left Monday's game at Dodger Stadium with injuries.
Kemp was chasing down a ball hit to deep right-center in the fourth inning by Colorado's Jeff Baker, and collided with the outfield wall. He left the field under his own power, but was diagnosed with a sore right shoulder and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for X-rays.
Schmidt came up holding his right leg after covering first base on a ground ball hit by Kazuo Matsui in the fifth. He was diagnosed with tightness in his right hamstring and was replaced by Mark Hendrickson.
Schmidt went four-plus innings, giving up seven hits and four runs -- three earned -- striking out six.
Marlins place Nolasco on DL

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Florida Marlins placed righthanded pitcher Ricky Nolasco on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with right elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to April 7.
Nolasco has pitched only one game this season -- April 6 against Philadelphia -- giving up three hits and three runs including a home run in 1 1/3 innings.
The 24-year-old California native was 11-11 with a 4.82 ERA for the Marlins in 35 games in 2006.
Florida selected the contract of Rick Vanden Hurk from Double-A Carolina to take Nolasco's spot on the roster. He is scheduled to make his major league debut on Tuesday as the Marlins take on the Brewers.
The 21-year-old righthander split last season between Jupiter of the Florida State League and the Gulf Coast Marlins, compiling a 1.80 ERA in eight starts.
Twins place White, Cirillo on DL

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins placed starting left fielder Rondell White and backup corner infielder Jeff Cirillo on the 15-day disabled list after Monday's game against the New York Yankees.
Cirillo's injury, a medial meniscus cartilage tear in his left knee, is more serious and will likely require arthroscopic surgery this week that should keep him out for about a month. He was Minnesota's designated hitter for the season opener, but he complained during that game of soreness that persisted despite a cortisone shot the next day. Cirillo's DL date is retroactive to Sunday.
White got hurt in Chicago while skipping out of the dugout during warmups before Saturday's game against the White Sox. His DL date is retroactive to Wednesday.
''Maybe it could be better in four or five days, but right now we need bodies,'' White said.
The oft-injured 13-year veteran, coming off a rough season, was especially disappointed after feeling as healthy and strong this spring as he has in some time.
''It came out of the blue,'' he said.
Infielder Alexi Casilla and outfielder Josh Rabe were brought up from Triple-A Rochester to take their places on the roster. Rabe was added to the 40-man roster and will start Tuesday against the Yankees.

After snow wiped out Cleveland's series against Seattle for the fourth day in a row Monday, the Indians moved their next series against the Los Angeles Angels to Milwaukee's Miller Park. The teams will play a three-game series beginning Tuesday in the ballpark, which unlike Jacobs Field, has a retractable roof. The opener and Wednesday's game will be played at 7:05 p.m. EDT, with Thursday's scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
BEEN A WHILE
Carl Pavano gave up six hits and two runs in seven efficient innings to lead New York over Minnesota 8-2 Monday night. Pavano struck out two and didn't walk a batter in a 79 pitch effort that earned him his first win since May 22, 2005. Before pitching last week on opening day, Pavano's previous appearance was on June 27, 2005, after which he was sidelined with shoulder, elbow and back problems.
STREAKING
Florida beat Milwaukee 5-3 on Monday, the Marlins' ninth win in a row over the Brewers, which is the longest active streak between teams in the major leagues. Florida went 7-0 against Milwaukee last year. ... According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Alex Rodriguez became the first player in Yankees history to hit five homers in the first six games after his two-run shot in a 8-2 win at Minnesota.

Cardinals staff ace Chris Carpenter was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday after an MRI exam in St. Louis revealed arthritis and a previously undiscovered impingement in his right elbow. Carpenter, the NL Cy Young Award winner with a 21-5 record in 2005, hasn't pitched since allowing five runs in six innings during a 6-1 loss to the Mets in the season-opening game April 1. ... Florida right-hander Ricky Nolasco was placed on the disabled list Monday with elbow inflammation, and he'll be replaced in the rotation by right-hander Rick Vanden Hurk.

Mike Hampton will have surgery on his left elbow on Tuesday in New York, and the Atlanta Braves pitcher will miss his second straight season. Hampton, who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery performed by Dr. Dave Altchek on Sept. 26, 2005, was hurt again while batting during spring training this year. After experiencing more arm pain last weekend, Hampton was examined Monday by Altchek, who diagnosed a torn flexor tendon in the elbow of the 34-year-old. Hampton, who made only 12 starts in 2005, is expected to be able to return to pitching activities in six-to-nine months.
THE REPLACEMENT
Houston demoted Brad Lidge from the closer role Monday in favor of Dan Wheeler, a move made one day after Lidge gave up five runs in two-third of an inning against the Cardinals. Lidge, who has saved 29 or more games in each of the last three seasons for Houston, had a 16.20 ERA and a blown save entering Monday's game against the Cubs. Lidge will be used in middle relief, with the possibility he could regain his job as closer. Wheeler recorded his first save Monday in a 5-3 win over the Cubs.
Hampton to miss season following another elbow operation

ATLANTA (AP) -- Mike Hampton will have surgery on his left elbow on Tuesday in New York, leaving the Atlanta Braves without one of their starting pitchers for the second straight season.
Hampton, who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery performed by Dr. Dave Altchek on Sept. 26, 2005, will have a torn tendon in the elbow repaired by Altchek on Tuesday. He is expected to be held out of pitching activities for at least six months.
Hampton was examined in New York on Monday by Altchek, and the diagnosis was the latest in a series of medical setbacks for the left-hander. Hampton was unable to make a start in spring training after straining muscle in his left side during batting practice.
"I guess the only silver lining is my elbow will get a little more time to rest," Hampton said in spring training.
Hampton recovered from the oblique injury sooner than expected, and the team had planned for him to make a series of minor league rehabilitation starts and join the rotation by early May.
Instead, Hampton felt more pain in the elbow when throwing in the bullpen Sunday. He met with team doctors Sunday and scheduled the appointment with Altchek.
The 34-year-old Hampton has failed to meet expectations since signing a $121 million, eight-year contract with Colorado before the 2001 season.
Hampton is 53-48 since agreeing to the big contract with Colorado. He is owed $14.5 million this year and $15 million in 2008.
Hampton went 5-3 in 12 starts for the Braves in 2005, struggling much of the season with a sore elbow. His best season was in 1999, when he went 22-4 with the Houston Astros.
After Hampton was hurt in spring training, the team signed another left-hander, Mark Redman, who struggled in Friday's loss to the New York Mets.
With Hampton lost for the season, Redman, Kyle Davies and Lance Cormier are the team's top three options for the last two spots in the rotation behind John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Chuck James.
Davies gave up two runs and four hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 3-2 win over the Mets.
General manager John Schuerholz decided not comment until after the operation, spokesman Brad Hainje said.
Seattle places Rhodes on DL

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners placed Arthur Rhodes on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with inflammation in his left elbow. The move is retroactive to April 1.
Rhodes, 37, was signed in the offseason by Seattle.
Last season with Philadelphia, he went 0-5 with a 5.32 earned run average and four saves in 55 appearances.
In eight appearances in the preseason, Rhodes had a 2.57 ERA in seven innings of work.
To replace Rhodes on the roster, Seattle recalled pitcher Jake Woods from Triple-A Tacoma.
