Sanchez out of Pirates' lineup with sore left wrist

ST. LOUIS -- Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez, last year's NL batting champion, was out of the lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday with a sore left wrist.
Manager Jim Tracy said Sanchez hurt the wrist on a checked swing.
''His grip strength is fine,'' Tracy said. ''When he goes to finish his swing it's bothering him.''
Jose Castillo replaced Sanchez at second base, batting eighth, and Jason Bay moved up to the third slot in the order.
Sanchez tripled and singled in a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday and was batting .348 with three RBIs in 23 at-bats. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list with a knee injury and has played in six games.
Sanchez batted .344 last year after beginning the season as a platoon player.
White Sox put Podsednik on DL, call up Logan

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Scott Podsednik on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday before their game with the Texas Rangers a pulled groin muscle and called up reliever Boone Logan from Triple-A Charlotte.
Podsednik is batting .303 with one home run, two RBI, three stolen bases and six runs scored in 10 games.
Logan is 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA and 11 strikeouts in four relief appearances with Charlotte. He pitched in 21 games with the White Sox last season. He was 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA.
Dodgers put ace Schmidt on DL

PHOENIX -- The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with shoulder inflammation. The move was retroactive to Sunday.
Schmidt had an MRI Monday in Phoenix and there is no timeframe for his return. The team is going to give him a few days off to see if the irritation subsides.
Schmidt is 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA.
''We are going to give it a few days to let it calm down. Hopefully it's just a short term thing,'' Dodgers manager Grady Little said.
The Dodgers have not made a corresponding roster move and Little did not name a starter for Thursday at Colorado. Oddsmakers have not yet set a line for that game.
Astros place Jennings on DL

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros placed right-hander Jason Jennings on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 9, on Tuesday due to elbow flexor tendinitis in his pitching elbow.
An MRI performed showed no structural damage.
The 28-year-old Jennings, acquired from the Colorado Rockies in the offseason, is scheduled to undergo rehabilitation of rest, medication and treatment, according to the Astros.
He has a career record of 58-57 with a 4.72 ERA with Colorado and Houston.
The Astros recalled pitcher Matt Albers from Triple-A. Albers will pitch on Friday against Milwaukee.
A's RF Milton Bradley (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Wednesday.
Marlins CF Alejandro De Aza (ankle) is listed as questionable for Wednesday.
Harden's MRI is negative
But the A's starter will get a few extra days' rest for his right shoulder
OAKLAND -- Given what he knows about pitching injuries, not to mention Rich Harden's history, A's pitching coach Curt Young wasn't jumping up and down when he heard the encouraging news about his star pitcher.
But there's no denying the A's dodged a rather large bullet when an MRI on Harden's right shoulder came back negative.
An MRI taken Monday on Harden's pitching shoulder showed "nothing major," according to manager Bob Geren. The A's plan on giving Harden a few extra days before his next start, but he shouldn't miss any significant time.
"We're going to be cautious," Young said. "It's really hard to judge until he throws the ball. But (the MRI) was important, especially anytime you're talking about a pitcher's shoulder. It's surprising they didn't find anything, in general."
Harden was forced to leave Sunday's game against the New York Yankees because of tightness in his shoulder. He has been hampered by injuries in recent years -- he made just nine starts last season because of back and elbow ailments and appeared in just 22 games in 2005 because of an oblique strain.
Young said Harden will attempt to play catch today and that will determine when he will throw his next bullpen session. Young said the earliest Harden would make his next start would be Tuesday at Baltimore. If he doesn't start that game, he likely would take the mound later in the week.
"We always want to be cautious," Geren said. "I prefer to wait until he's ready. If he feels great, he's in there."
Bradley update
A's outfielder Milton Bradley was out off the lineup Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels for the fifth straight game because of a strained left hamstring, but Geren said his condition was improving. Bradley ran 50-yard and 30-yard sprints before the game with strength and conditioning coach Clarence Cockrell and felt "a lot better, but he's still not ready to play." according to Geren. The A's still aren't ruling out the possibility of putting Bradley on the disabled list.
On the mend
Injured starting pitcher Esteban Loaiza came back feeling good after a doctor's appointment Tuesday and said he's about a week away from throwing again. Loaiza has yet to pitch this season because of a bulging disk in his neck. Loaiza said he feels almost 100 percent healthy but wants to be cautious to avoid aggravating the injury. He has another doctor's appointment next Tuesday, and if all goes well, he said he will begin throwing that day or the next. "I don't want to start throwing today and then feel something and have to shut it down," he said.
Short hops
Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero is expected to miss both games of this series after getting hit on the right wrist with a pitch by Boston's Josh Beckett on Monday. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said there was an outside chance Guerrero could serve as a pinch hitter today. ...Second baseman Mark Ellis was back in the A's lineup after missing two games following being hit by a pitch in the left shoulder. ... A's outfielder Nick Swisher, who grew up about 31/2 hours from Virginia Tech in Parkersburg, W.Va., said he was shocked by Monday's shooting massacre on the campus in Blacksburg, Va. "I don't care if it's in California, Florida or Virginia, that's horrible," he said.
