Mets' Martinez out least four weeks
Pedro Martinez will be sidelined at least four weeks with what the New York Mets said was a mild strain of his left hamstring.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner was put on the 15-day disabled list before a game against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night.
Martinez was injured Tuesday night and returned to New York for an examination.
"He's an unfortunate loss," pitcher John Maine said. "Everyone knows what Pedro can do."
Seattle Mariners All-Star closer J.J. Putz was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a rib-cage injury.
Putz, who converted 40 of 42 save opportunities last season, felt discomfort on a pitch against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, when he blew a save by giving up a go-ahead home run to Josh Hamilton in the top of the ninth.
The Philadelphia Phillies designated infielder Wes Helms for assignment and have 10 days to trade Helms, who is due $2.9 million this season, or put him on waivers.
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir threw 44 pitches during a 13-minute bullpen session.
Kazmir has been slowed by a left elbow strain, which he felt while warming up for an intrasquad game Feb. 26. He expects to have another mound session Saturday.
I would of liked to get Kazmir up here for some late relief
I think Pedro is done. That dude doesn't even look like he wants to pitch. I think he will drag out injuries and other nonsense until he can go off into retirement
If Martinez could only stay healthy, the Mets would have a sick rotation. Santana is a stud and Maine is set for a breakout year. Pedro would have been a nasty No. 3 and maybe he still can, but it doesn't look good.
Isn't Maine like 45?
Maine is 26...
