My free play for tonight is on the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs, in the late game on national television.
What I've noticed this season is how hard it's been for road teams to complete a sweep on Sundays. And given this is a heated rivalry from the National League Central, I think the Cardinals come to play tonight.
Chicago is in second place in the division, with the Redbirds right behind in third. Despite last night's loss, the Cardinals are still above .500 at home, and they have a very good chance at ending the weekend with a victory.
I'll go ahead and list both scheduled starters: Joe Quintana and Jack Flaherty.
The 22-year-old Flaherty ranks second among National League rookie starters in ERA (2.96) and third in strikeout rate (9.46). He's proven he belongs in this rotation, and will look to make a statement tonight. He’s already 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA since re-entering the rotation last month, and will stifle the Cubs while he's on the hill tonight.
Yes, Quintana has given up two runs or fewer in three straight starts for the first time since June 2017, yes he limited the Brewers to two runs over six innings, but they were both on solo homers in his last outing, and yes Quintana is 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA in seven road starts - but there is the due factor. And I think the Cardinals will chase him early when he makes a mistake in the zone.
Play St. Louis, list both.
