The Duke's Sports

Los Angeles Angels (-105) for 2.5 Units

The Angels are riding a 7-2 run and getting good run production in the process. Tonight, we'll look for LA to hammer away on Ian Snell who sports an 0-2 mark with a 7.04 ERA vs the Angels. LA is 10-1 vs a starter with a WHIP over 1.30. Snell hasn't been efficient with his pitches and has yet to win a decision this season. On the other hand, Joe Saunders should redeem himself after last Saturday's disastrous start vs Seattle. Saunders is 10-1 in team starts vs Seattle. The Angels are 10-1 on the road with Saunders as a favorite, and they're 27-10 in game 1 of a series with Saunders; furthermore, they're 14-6 on Friday with Saunders. With the Angels sporting a commanding 49-24 mark in this series, we'll grab the Angels.

Big Al McMordie
BIG AL's FRIDAY NIGHT BOUNCE BACK 3-GAME PACKAGE!
Our 3 selections include the Dodgers, Tigers, and Twins.

At 8:10 pm, our selection is on the Detroit Tigers over the Kansas City Royals. Detroit is still trying to get over the unfortunate incident on Wednesday night when Armando Galarraga had a perfect game ruined by a umpire's call with just one out to go. They took out their frustration with that bungled call on Cleveland yesterday afternoon, scoring 12 runs, but chances are they aren't through and the Royals will be the next victim of a team and an offense that is rightfully a bit ticked off at this point and wants to score as many runs for their pitchers as possible. Like Galarraga, tonight's starter Max Scherzer was exiled to the minors for a bit but has come roaring back to the big leagues and in his first start back on May 30 he went a bit nuts with his power pitch, striking out 14 Oakland batters while shutting out the A's over 5 2/3 innings. The Royals are going to give Panamanian southpaw Bruce Chen just his second start of the season, and the one-time top prospect of the Atlanta Braves showed enough in his outing against the Red Sox to warrant KC letting him go out again tonight, although the Royals lost that last start by an 8-1 margin. KC is 24-50 in their last 74 home games. Take the Tigers.

At 10:05 pm our selection is on the Minnesota Twins over the Oakland Athletics. Twins righthander Scott Baker has a bad habit of starting off his seasons slowly typically with a bad month of April and slightly better numbers in the second month. He's up to his old tricks in 2010 as Baker was just 2-2 with a 5.72 ERA in five April starts and improved on that in May when he went 3-2 with a 3.55 ERA and June is one of Baker's strongest months so the Twins are probably looking forward to the next several weeks as Baker should just now be hitting his stride. Take a look at the teams he pitched against in May and you'll see the Yankees (twice), Red Sox, Rangers, and Tigers, all very good teams with winning records, and when he faced the only team with a losing record (Baltimore), he had his best start of the season. Dallas Braden apparently has the "curse of the perfect game" as since his perfecto performance against the Rays on May 9, Braden has lost three of four starts and the A's are 0-4 in those games. Braden's last start was his worst, as the Tigers pasted the A's 10-2 and the southpaw surrendered five runs on 11 hits in just six innings. Braden may have still been hurting from a bad ankle in that start, but he's just 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in his career against the Twins, so it may not get any better tonight. Take Minny.

At 10:10 pm, our selection is on the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta's Kenshin Kawakami lost his first seven decisions of the season, becoming the first Braves pitcher since 1985 to pull off that dubious feat. The 35-year-old Japanese righthander lost his first six starts, then had a couple of no-decisions before losing his next start. In his last trip to the mound, the righthander looked like he might finally get that elusive first victory against the lowly Pirates, but alas it was not to be. Things should get tougher tonight in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and lefthander Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is on a roll right now with wins in four of his last five starts and after going into May 9 with an ERA of 4.99, Kershaw has now reduced that number by more than two runs to 2.95. Most important for Kershaw is that he's been reducing the number of walks he's issued. In five April starts, Kershaw walked 22 batters, but in his six May starts, he only gave up 15 free passes. If he can continue that trend, he could definitely move into the elite of the top 5 or 6 NL starters. The Dodgers as a team are as hot as Kershaw is, winning 20 of their last 27 games heading, and they've won 35 of their last 53 home games. Take the Dodgers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie

Dwayne Bryant

Texas -128

The Rays have the best record in baseball at 36-18, as well as the best road record in the entire league at 21-6. The Rangers have the second-best home record in the AL at 18-9 and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington has not been kind to the Rays, who were 1-5 in this stadium last season.

Tampa sends Wade Davis to the hill. Davis has a decent 4.04 ERA on the season, but his WHIP of 1.46 is a bit high. That WHIP is 1.79 over his last three starts, so I don't expect Texas to have trouble getting men on base tonight. This will be the first time Texas' hitters will be facing Davis, so he could have the edge the first time or two through the lineup. So why am I on Texas anyway? Because the Rangers are batting .297 and scoring 5.78 runs per game at home against righties this season and Davis walks his share of batters, so Texas still has a good shot to break through early against Davis. One other thing to note about Davis: He has made 10 starts this seaso„n and he has yet to produce back-to-back Quality Starts. He had a Quality Start in his last outing, so...

C.J. Wilson will toe the rubber for Texas. Yes, Wilson has struggled in his last three starts, posting a 9.56 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. But even with those three duds thrown in, Wilson still owns solid season numbers (3.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP). But here's why I expect Wilson to have a solid outing tonight: The Rays have seen Wilson from his days in the bullpen, but only TWO guys have had any real success against him and one of those guys, Jason Bartlett, is on the DL. Willy Aybar is 2-for-2 off Wilson with a pair of singles. That's it. Carl Crawford is just 1-for-9 (.111 BA) against Wilson. And while that one hit was a homer, Crawford also struck out three times. Evan Longoria, Dioner Navarro, Carlos Pena, B.J. Upton, and Ben Zobrist are a combined 0-for-14 lifetime against Wilson. Ouch. The Rays are also hitting just .240 on the road against lefties this season.

Bottom line: The Rays have struggled in Texas. They haven't hit well against lefties on the road. The Rays lineup has had almost NO success against Wilson. Texas hits righties very well at home and Davis walks his share of batters. Add it all up and it sure sounds like a winner to me. Take Texas/Wilson over Tampa Bay/Davis.
