The Pirates are coming off a walk-off victory last night so it was celebration time before hitting the road to the west coast. Pittsburgh improved to 26-19 at home but remains dismal on the road, going just 16-33 on the season including losses in four straight and 11 of their last 13 games away from home. Of those 11 losses, nine came by more than one run which is our key number tonight. Charlie Morton has been pitching pretty well for the Pirates and he is coming off his best start of the season last time out where he allowed no runs and just three hits in seven innings against the Giants. That was at home however and his last road game resulted in five runs allowed on 10 hits and four innings. Pittsburgh is average only 3.5 rpg in his six starts this season and they will be fortunate to come even close to that tonight. Dan Haren has been pitching outstanding but because he plays for a bad team, the wins are not coming like they should be and thus, he is not getting the recognition he deserves. He is a huge favorite tonight, as he should be, but I do not recommend laying that kind of lumber with anyone. He has tossed 10 straight quality starts and of his19 outings this season, 18 have been quality performances which is pretty amazing. He is a perfect 9-9 in home starts where his ERA is 1.70 in those games. Arizona is 12-4 in Haren’s last 16 starts and of those 12 victories, 10 have come by more than one run and the average win in those 12 games was by an average of 3.8 rpg. That is where the value comes into play in backing the runline as opposed to the heavy moneyline. The Diamondbacks are just 5-4 in his nine home games however that is after dropping the first two games and despite the .555 winning percentage overall, the average score has been still close to two rpg. Haren has been solid when playing a team that is winning only 38 to 46 percent of its games as his teams are 11-4 in such games at home against the runline, with an average run differential of +3.0 rpg. Also, after allowing two runs or fewer in his last two starts, his teams are 10-3 against the runline, again with an average run differential of +3.0 ppg.

Jered Weaver can be very good and the Angels over the past few months have really picked things up for sure but to get a quality hurler in Scott Baker along with a pair of studs in Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau along with a solid well coached Minnesota club plus this number is an absolute no-brainer.

The Angels are still a banged up club I don't care if they have been winning a ton even without Guerrero and Hunter. It will catch up to them at some point and after just playing that doubleheader in Kansas City on Tuesday and another game on Wednesday fatigue could be a bit of an issue for tonight's homeboys. Mike Scioscia's club has won game after game unlike Ron Gardenhire's who have been losing and just did so in horrific fashion 16-1 on Wednesday. But this is baseball and results like that if anything help the next time out as it's not that much of a momentum sport at all.

Look for Baker to continue some recent success and get the ball to Joe Nathan in a well pitched quality ballgame involing two good clubs that play ball the right way. It's not like Weaver has been at his best at all of late making him more vulnerable than at other times in his career. The righty has now allowed 27 ER in his last 33.1 IP. I don't need to tell you how that is not very good.
