Guaranteed Pick: Larry Ness
Game: St Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds Aug 10 2010 7:10PM
Prediction: Cincinnati Reds
Reason: My 10* NL Central Game of the Month is on the Cin Reds at 7:10 ET.
I played the Cards yesterday as a free play and won 7-3 behind Carpenter's 9th straight win over the Reds. The victory moved the Cards to within one game of the Reds in the NL Central and as I mentioned yesterday, these teams have alternated leading this division 17 times since May 15. St Louis set up its rotation perfectly for this series, with Carpenter leading off, Garcia pitching tonight and Wainwright pitching in tomorrow's final game. With last night's win, the Cards are 46-24 with their "Big Three" on the mound but 16-25 with anyone else starting. If St Louis can't find at least one more consistent starter, it may cost them come late September. Getting back to tonight's game, it's Jamie Garcia vs (9-5, 2.53 ERA) vs Johnny Cueto (11-2, 3.24 ERA). Both young pitchers have pitched very well yet both have not won as many games as they could have (should have?), as the Cards are 2-5 in Garcia's seven no decisions and the Reds 3-6 in Cueto's nine no decisions. Garcia owns a solid 3.12 road ERA in 11 starts this season but he's allowed 16 hits and 11 runs (seven earned) in his last two outings (one home / one away) over 11 innings, giving him a 5.73 ERA. Meanwhile, Cueto owns a 1.55 ERA over his last eight starts (he's 5-0 and the team 5-3), is 5-0 with a 3.58 ERA in his last eight home starts (team is 6-2) plus 6-0 with a 2.47 ERA in his 10 starts this season vs division opponents (team is 7-3). The clincher comes in that the Cards are a woeful 4-14 as a road underdog this season, a 78% "go-against" situation.

Cheap number for a team 14-3 their last 17. Add in the fact LAs starter Padillia is 1-7 on the road in his last 8 road starts and I like the home team here. Philly on a roll. The Phils bullpen is vastly better, their hitting as a team is better as well as on base percentage. Looking for reasons to see why this is trap line, but cannot find one. Philly the better team at home and Kendrick on the hill is 3-0 his last 3 with under a 2 ERA and a solid bullpen behind him. Play 1 Unit on Philadelphia.

We just can’t pass up taking Jimenez with Pelfrey as his opposition. Huge pitching mismatch here. It’s pretty well documented that Jimenez is one of the top pitchers in the NL with an 18-4 team start record and 2.61 ERA. However, he’s even more dominating on the road with a 2.23 ERA and 1.091 ERA. Pelfrey started out strong for the Mets but he’s not been pitching very well of late. On the season his ERA has inflated to 4.16 and his WHIP is a not so impressive 1.542. The Mets have lost all of his last six starts as Pelfrey has failed to make it past the fifth inning in any of those outings. After the All Star break Jimenez was a bit off in his first two starts but has since rebounded in his last two allowing only two earned runs in 14 innings pitched. In both of those games he allowed only four hits. The Mets are back home after a tough 6-game road trip at Atlanta and Philadelphia winning only two of those games. The Mets have been struggling at the plate with a .237 average in their last 7 games which has translated into them scoring only 2.7 runs per contest. We’re going to lay the $150 tonight knowing that Jimenez is 22-3 over the last two seasons as a $150 or more favorite. The Mets are struggling coming down the stretch posting a 11-23 record in the second half of the season. It’s all Colorado tonight.

When the Rockies send leading Cy Young contender Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound against Mike Pelfry and the Mets at Citi Field in New York this evening they will do so knowing Jimenez is 6-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last seven team starts during the month of August. With Pelfrey in struggling current form at 0-6 with a 10.28 ERA in his last six starts, look for the Mets to fall to 2-6 behind Pelfery in the month of August here tonight. We recommend a strong 3-unit play on Colorado.
