Those are not the kind of numbers you want to hitch your cart to, especially against an under the radar Pirates team winning 21 of 36 at home, and recently unbeatable at home if given +1.5 runs, as they would be 15-2 in their last 17. I’m going with the Pirates on the runline.

The same could be said for Minnesota, until Simeone Augustus went down with an injury. The Lynx scored against Phoenix, which everyone does, but they are clearly not as potent of a team without their star player. The Dream, has quietly scored 81 or more points in each of their five home games, and is a big threat on home hardwood. They are 3-2 at home with one of the losses in OT. The Lynx are struggling to get on a run, as they are now 4-11 ATS after a win, and the Dream is now 4-1 ATS against a team with a winning record. I'm going with Atlanta here.

Dan Haren has put up some exceptional numbers over his career, and has to be considered a top pitcher in MLB right now. He is 71-57 for his career with an ERA of 3.57. There is a caveat to all of that though, as Haren has never pitched behind a team with a particularly strong offense, and has had to fight and scratch for every win. That is certainly true on the road, where he has pitched his teams to just a 31-28 mark. Right now Arizona is struggling mightily, dropping five straight, eight of nine, and 17 of 24. The Reds are 9-3 in Arroyo's last 12 starts as a dog, and the D-Backs are just 3-13 in their last 16 against right-hand pitching.

This kid Matt Garza is real-deal Holyfield, and will emerge as one of the best pitchers in baseball over the next few years. Believe that. And with off-speed abilities, and the Rays’ recent surge, they will earn their season-high seventh straight win. The Rays have passed the Blue Jays in the American League East, they have their sights set on the Yankees, and they’re gunning for the Red Sox.
The Blue Jays continue to show us the hot-and-cold streaks. On May 18, the Blue Jays were 3-1/2 games ahead of Boston after winning 27 of their first 41 games. The Rays on the other hand had clawed their way back to .500 (20-20) after losing 14 of their first 22. Ever since, Toronto has lost 23 of 37 while Tampa Bay has won 23 of 38 to move two games within the Blue Jays for third place in the East.

This team is playing tremendous with its offense, as they’ve scored a major league-best 438 runs. And as we saw last night, Blue Jays' offense continued to struggle after a rough weekend against the defending champion Phillies. They were limited to no runs and two hits through the first six innings, and barely scratched their way into the game last night.

4* (979) Tigers at Oakland A's: Detroit is moving up offensively, at 11th in MLB in runs scored after struggling early in the season. The first place Tigers just won 8 of 10 games, with Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson tying for the team lead with 18 homers. The bullpen is solidified now with Fernando Rodney nailing 17th saves in 17 tries. The Tigers will need reliever Joel Zumaya to come up big in the seventh and eighth innings the rest of the year, if they hope to keep this thing rolling. Starter Armanado Galarraga is off a strong game, picking up his fourth win of the season. He finished with four runs in six innings while striking out five and walking one. He faces a terrible offensive team in Oakland. I'm not sold on young starter Gio Gonzalez (0-1, 8.03 ERA), who is not only hittable but has walked 9 batters in just 12 innings. The visitors hold all the cards. Play the Tigers.

3* Astros at (964) Padres. A couple of bad teams meet here, but finding San Diego as a home dog to Mike Hampton should raise some eyebrows. Hampton has 4 wins and 5 losses and an ERA that's below average, though not terrible. On the other hand, his numbers are not good, walking too many (27 in 67 innings), and has allowed 97 base runners in those 67 IP. If you've seen the Houston reports all season, they've reported that Hampton has below average stuff and the only reason he's in the rotation is they have limited options. San Diego is actually decent at home with a good record, a winning one. San Diego starter Josh Banks (2.84) has been good and the Astros have never seen him before. Houston is 25th in the NL in runs scored. Have to back the home dog here. Play the Padres.

5* (973) Red Sox at Orioles: The Red Sox are the best team in the AL, with great pitching, balance on offense and a deep, lights out pen. And the offense is even better with David Ortiz straightened out. Ortiz has 7 homers in 47 at-bats dating to June 6, and his third in four games. In his last 18 games (15 starts), Ortiz has slugged .796 and knocked in 14 runs. Starter John Smoltz may habe an ERA of nine, but that is a mirage, as he has only one start and had a bad first inning. The positive part is that he settled down to allow just one run on three hits over the following four innings, and he seems healthy. Baltimore lefty Rich Hill (6.03 ERA) walks too many batters (24 in 37 innings) and that will be a killer against this talented and patient Boston offense that loves to draw free passes. This is a cheap price on the top team that should see a one-sided game here. Play the Red Sox
