TEXAS RANGERS VS CLEVELAND INDIANS
Take: 5-Star TEXAS RANGERS

Texas has a few injury concerns, but they are still a talented motivated team in a pennant race. They get to go with a terrific young arm in Brandon McCarthy, at 6-2 on the season. He doesn't walk anyone and the team is 4-2 his last 6 starts. Cleveland is going nowhere and starter Aaron Laffey has a decent ERA, but walks way too many batters: 45 in 96 innings. He is also hittable, allowing 139 base runners in 96 innings. Play the Rangers.

Road Warrior Wipeout!

CHICAGO CUBS VS PITTSBURGH PIRATES
Take: 3-Star CHICAGO CUBS

With the pressure off, Chicago righty Ryan Dempster has been throwing smoke, with a 1.80 ERA and a 2-1 record his last three starts. He has fanned 19 with only 4 walks! The Cubs assured the Pirates of a record-breaking 17th consecutive losing season, getting two homers from Derrek Lee and an effective start from Ted Lilly while winning 4-2 on Monday. By losing their 10th in 11 games, the Pirates will finish below .500, just as they have every season since 1993. Lefty Zach Duke tries to get them going here, but he's been weak, with a 6.75 ERA his last three starts. Play the Cubs.

3* NY YANKEES over TAMPA BAY
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
In turning that 6* Run Line ticket against Tampa Bay in the night cap of Monday's double-header we noted just how fragile the psychological state of the team was, and the Rays promptly suffered an 11-1 beating that took the situation from bad to worse. It does not get any better here, and we believe the the oddsmakers are selling this far short of the true realities. When one side is 16.5 games behind the other, and the home/away splits are 29-40 going into a 47-20, it shows that the past reputation of Tampa is carrying much more weight than it should. The Rays enter this game on an 0-6 slide and the prime culprit is also one of the reasons why tonight's line is fair; the bullpen has been a disaster, and that part of the game is still under-valued in today's marketplace. Five times in those six games Tampa was either tied or in the lead from the 6th inning on, but an over-matched and worn out relief corps can no longer get the job done. The bullpen sports a 9.56 ERA in this streak, and the Yankee lineup in this particular stadium is not a place to turn that around. It is also not a prime spot for David Price to be successful, with a 1-4/6.81 on the road this season that includes getting stretched out to 106 pitches over 5.2 frames in his only appearance here. Chad Gaudin brings nothing special to the table, and that is actually a bonus for us because it brings a favorable price point. But he understands what is on the line here, a chance to pitch his way onto the playoff roster, and with 121 strikeouts in 123 innings this season his arm has shown some pop. Now he gets to face a lineup that will badly miss the bat of Carlos Pena, and also knows that his job is merely to build a bridge to a bullpen that had an easy time of it on Monday, courtesy of C. C. Sabathia and A. J. Burnett. That bullpen becomes the key element here, having major edges over their Tampa counterparts that should comfortably secure this one in the latter stages.

Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar missed his second consecutive game after turning his right ankle lunging at first base Friday night trying to beat out a throw, but is expected back here. The day off Monday will help, too, as Atlanta needs to regroup. They have an ace here in Javier Vazquez (3.18), who may only be 11-9 but he's had a great season with 199 Ks, just 36 walks in 181 innings. Throw in 157 hits allowed, and he has been outstanding all year. His last three starts: 2 walks, 21 Ks in 19 innings. Houston is going nowhere, and righty Felipe Paulino is slumping, at 0-3 with a 10.95 ERA his last three. Play the Braves. Felipe Paulino

Orioles at Red Sox
Pick: Over 9.5
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Sometimes a young pitcher “hits the wall” and we feel that is the case with rookie David Hernandez of the Orioles. The right-hander is only 24 years old and Baltimore has won just once in his last seven starts. In those outings, he’s allowed 24 earned runs on 39 hits and 23 walks in 34.1 innings of work. Yes, that works out to a 6.29 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP. That is not going to get the job done at the big league level and we feel Hernandez will get “lit up” again here. He’s allowed 13 homers in his last 34.1 innings. The right-hander is a flyball pitcher and he now faces a powerful Red Sox lineup at hitter-friendly Fenway Park on a mild evening. The Red Sox will be getting their third look at Hernandez in the last six weeks and they hit him much harder in the second outing than they did in the first. In fact, Hernandez was quite lucky that he allowed just two earned runs against Boston at Camden Yards in early August. Hernandez lasted just 4.2 innings and he gave up four walks and seven hits so the damage easily could have been much worse. That is helping to give us some value here as this total is currently a 9.5 across the board. Note that, behind Hernandez, is an Orioles bullpen that is among the worst in the majors.

Unlike Baltimore, the Red Sox do have a solid bullpen. However, they could be asked to do too much here. We’re not sold on Clay Buchholz just yet. He’s struggled quite a bit in six of his last nine outings and one of those subpar efforts came against the Orioles when he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and four walks in just four innings of work. For Buchholz, there are some match-up issues with the Orioles because they have a number of left-handed sticks and switch-hitters on their roster. Note that Buchholz has been hit at a .293 clip by left-handed batters this season. The Orioles scored 7 runs on 11 hits yesterday and they have averaged 9 hits per game over their last dozen games. They’ve also averaged nearly 5 runs per game during this stretch. As for Boston, the Red Sox only managed 8 hits yesterday but they faced Mark Buehrle. Prior to yesterday’s game, Boston had managed at least 10 hits in 6 of their last 9 games. They’ve averaged 5 runs per game in their last 14 games. Play OVER the total in Boston as a 7* Regular Play selection.
