Solid Gold - Cards

Matchup: St Louis at Cincinnati
Time: 12:35 PM EDT (Wed)
Listed pitchers must go: (R) WAINWRIGHT, A vs. (R) ARROYO, B

Play: St Louis (ML -130)

The biggest series in recent Reds history wraps up today, and right now it's not going at all well for the hosts. Cincy has gotten clubbed by the Cardinals in their first two games of the set, and as a result the Redbirds have assumed the top spot in the NL Central. Simply stated, today's game is clearly the most important the Reds have played in years! But they're not responding positively to the pressure right now, and the specter of Adam Wainwright on the mound here for St. Louis is bad news for the home team. Bronson Arroyo has done some very good work for the Reds this season. But Wainwright in day games is insane, 8-0, 1.45 on the campaign and the Cards have all the momentum right now. I'll spot the price and back the Cardinals to finish off the sweep.

Kevin Rogers

Red Sox at Blue Jays
Pick: Blue Jays

The Jays have had plenty of problems with the Red Sox this season, but Shaun Marcum is one pitcher that has silenced the Boston bats. Marcum has allowed six hits and one earned run in two starts, splitting a pair of one-run decisions. Clay Buchholz has pitched incredible since coming off the DL for the Red Sox, as Boston has won each of his last three outings. Toronto is 5-1 its last six games off a home loss, while Boston has won three straight games just once since the end of June. I'll take the Jays here to beat the Sox.

THE PREZ

7* Athletics / Seattle Mariners Under 7.5

Since returning from a month layoff, Braden has fanned 17 batters in 25 innings and this after a one strikeout performance against the Rangers in his last start. The A's southpaw has a solid skill set, 6 K/9, 1.6 BB/9, and a 43% GB percentage. Braden had gone 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his last three starts before his loss to the Rangers last Friday. The loss followed a complete game effort against the White Sox where his pitch count was, obviously, high, and in one start against Seattle this season, Braden allowed just one run over seven innings while earning a no-decision. The A's lefty is also 4-1 in day games this year sporting a 3.20 ERA and faces a Mariners lineup that has been abysmal against left-handed pitching.

French is coming off his first win in which he pitched eight solid innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four and walking none. The win over the Royals was preceded by a six inning performance against the Twins where he allowed four runs on seven hits, his first long stint (6 innings) of the 2010 campaign. The Seattle southpaw has a history. In 2009, he started off with an impressive 2.22 ERA in his first six games before struggling in the middle of the season. His command 3.0 BB/9 is acceptable when pitching at home (SafeCo) and his flyball tendencies are trumped by the pitcher-friendly venue in Seattle. The converted reliever benefits from pitching at home against a daytime lineup of the A's, one that has a meager .695 OPS against left-handers in afternoon affairs. The A's OPS falls even further when hitting at the Coliseum or Safeco Field.

The A's are 20-7 to the UNDER when facing offensively challenged teams (being outscored by one run or more per game on the season) or more runs/game on the season and they are 23-9 UNDER against a starting pitcher who has allowed less than one home run ever two starts this year.
