Well aware of the Carpenter career mastery of the Dodgers - 5-0 lifetime - but cannot ignore that LA comes into this game 7-2 in it last nine games at Chavez Ravine while the Cardinals are just 2-8 in their last ten games. LA has been playing games that mattered for two weeks now while the Cards have basically been in shutdown mode, and it will be tough to just flip the switch. I like the Dodgers in this game and in the series as well.

For a number of different reasons I feel the value in this game is on the visitors: Chris Carpenter had another stellar season and is a perennial top-five Cy Young candidate. Carpenter will start for the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 tonight against Randy Wolf. The 2005 Cy Young winner is a strong contender again this season, boasting a 17-4 record and a NL-best 2.24 ERA; he was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA against the Dodgers this season. In the other dugout: Wolf spent eight seasons with Philadelphia, enduring his share of runner-up finishes and playoff misses. Then he missed the Dodgers’ playoff run last season, which ended in the NLCS against the Phillies. Wolf has had an excellent season, but his ERA reaches its highest point when pitching at home, going from 3.23 to 3.63 in front of the home town crowd. St. Louis might have ended the regular season with a 1-6 mark mark, but its on a long term 17-8 road winning streak and is 11-4 its last 15 vs. the Dodgers. LA also stumbled into the playoffs going 2-5 down the stretch and is a horrible 4-10 its last 14 at home vs. the Cardinals. Bottom line: Good value on a superior pitcher who will be extremely focused; look for the CARDINALS to move to 9-2 (+6.8 units) after three or more consecutive losses!

When the Cardinals take on the Dodgers in Los Angeles Wednesday night they will send ace right hander Chris Carpenter to the mound knowing he is 13-4 in his last 17 team starts, including 5-1 his last six away. He's also 6-0, 2.19 ERA in his career team starts in this series. Back Carpenter and the Cardinals here this evening. We recommend a 3-unit play on St. Louis with Carpenter.
