Chicago showed some life this week, taking 3 of 4 from Boston. They have a very good home record and play their 6th straight home game here. Last place Oakland has a poor road mark and is a long way from home. They also have nothing to play for. Oakland 21-year old stater Trevor Cahill (8-12) has a 4.66 ERA and really struggles away from Oakland's big home park, with a 2-5 record and a 4.99 ERA on the road, which is not uncommon with young pitchers. Freddie Garcia won his last starter, holding the Red Sox to one run over six solid innings. A cheap price on the hot home team. Play the White Sox.

Top of the Ticket - Afternoon

St. Louis Cardinals -190 over MILWAUKEE BREWERS

We certainly did not expect the markets to flock to the Brewers in this one, off of the kind of devastating loss last night that losing teams do not recover well from this late in the season. But we can understand where part of the logic comes from, while also completely disagreeing with it, and with the line reaching a threshold that enables us to put a 3* in play we are there. The pitch that we believe the markets are swinging it is the appearance of OK form for Jeff Suppan since coming off of the DL ? he has worked to a 1-0/2.81 over three starts. But let?s go to work. First, note that Suppan was simply awful in a pair of rehab starts, allowing nine runs on 13 hits over seven innings. Then note that in those three games back the ERA is purely sleight of hand ? he has allowed 19 hits and 12 walks over 16 innings, a WHIP that would double the actual runs allowed, and has only had five strikeouts. When your walks more than double your strikeouts, you are not ready to be back in a rotation yet. But here is the kicker ? those three games were home starts against the Pirates, Reds and Giants, who are 16th, 14th and 13th in the N.L. in runs scored. The bottom line is that he has shown absolutely nothing vs. weak competition over the past few weeks, but escaped statistically because sometimes the geometry of baseball allows it. Pencil him in for a comeuppance today, with the usual problems against Albert Pujols (.351), and a nightmare of a matchup against Tuesday?s hero Matt Holliday (how about 7-11, with three home runs, a double, and four walks?). The bullpen is also not positioned well after Mann Parra?s early Tuesday exit, with Carlos Villanueva and Claudio Vargas almost sure scratches for this night-to-day setting, and the confidence of Hoffman also an issue. Meanwhile Adam Wainwright finally had a bad inning in his last start, after a remarkable run of 13 straight games of two runs or less, but bouncing back will not be a problem ? in 10 starts after allowing four runs or more the past two seasons he has responded with a 2.66 in the ensuing game. If anything, getting roughed up in the 5th at Pittsburgh both puts a chip on his shoulder and brings him in fresher here, with that count of 98 pitches matching his second low over the past three months. He has more strikeouts than hits allowed vs. both Ryan Braun and Cecil Fielder, and with Ryan Franklin having been given a couple of days off the latter stages are also in very good hands.

4* Major Wednesday Night *BASES BEST BET*

Play: Phillies -1.5 -115

I like the Phillies by at least 2 runs tonight. Washington's Garrett Mock will start against Philadelphia for the first time tonight, but Philly is very familiar with him. He has a 5.40 ERA in nine career relief appearances against the Phillies, including a 9.00 ERA in four this year. I expect them to knock him out in the first 5 innings and then have their way with a pen that has an ERA of 5.17 this season. Lee gets the ball for the Phillies and he'll be hungry for a win tonight after consecutive poor outings. It's mighty embarrassing for an ace to get knocked around by a bottom feeder so I expect Lee to bring his A-game. The Phillies are 11-2 against the Nats this season, including 6-1 in Washington. The Nationals are 50-105 in their last 155 overall and 33-97 in their last 130 games following a loss. This looks like a solid spot to fade them again.
