Edwin Jackson never developed out in LA (2003-05) and then in his second year with the Rays in 2007, struggled through a 5-15 (5.76 ERA) season in which the Rays went 8-23 in his starts. However, 2008 was a breakout season for the Rays (who were AL champs) and Jackson won 14 games. He's been even better for the Tigers in 2009 (made All Star team), going 7-4 with a 2.32 ERA in 18 starts (121.2 IP and 94 hits allowed / 97-35 K-W ratio). Jackson's record deserves to be much better, as he's allowed three ERs or less in 16 of his 18 starts in 2009, including his last 10. However, his 3.55 run support average ranks among the worst in the majors. The same can't be said for his mound opponent in this game, Joba Chamberlain. He's in his first full season as a starter but has struggled with high walk rates and high pitch counts. Consider this. Chamberlain has made nine home starts in 2009, allowing 48 hits and 25 walks over 42 innings with a 5.36 ERA. He's 0-2 but the Yankees have won all SEVEN of his no decisions. Chamberlain hasn't pitched well but the Yankee bats keep covering it up.I'm taking the price with Jackson and the Tigers

We are getting solid value here Sunday afternoon with the Tigers who have the superior pitcher on the mound. Edwin Jackson (7-4, 2.52) is well rested so I look for him to have dominating stuff against this Yankees line-up today and the Tigers are a perfect 5-0 in Jackson's last 5 starts when the posted total is 9.0 to 10.5. Jackson has pitched solid on the road with an ERA of just 2.33 over 10 starts and Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 4.25 ERA) has struggled at home for the Yankees with an ERA of 5.36 over 9 starts. Chamberlain has been hit very hard over his last 3 starts giving up 27 hits over just 13.3 innings including 4 homeruns and I look for the Tigers bats to come alive today. The Tigers are 6-2 in their last 8 games in game 3 of a series and they are 11-3 in their last 14 games played on Sunday. Take the Detroit Tigers Sunday.

Lackey is better than his numbers indicate and if he stays healthy should have a strong second half. Note that he closed out the first half by limiting the Yankees to two runs through seven complete innings.

Hiroki Kuroda of the Los Angeles Dodgers was dominant in his two starts vs. the Houston Astros last season, while Russ Ortiz has been surprisingly serviceable for the Astros.

Granted, Kuroda has been more inconsistent than usual lately, but Houston could be the perfect remedy for him. Kuroda allowed a total of one run and only six hits in 13.2 innings over those two starts vs. the Astros last year, and although they have been hitting better lately, they are still batting a modest .258 vs. right-handed pitchers on the road this season. Kuroda also has a 1.11 WHIP in four home starts, and he has always pitcher better at home since entering the league.

Ortiz has surprisingly allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his 10 starts this season, and one of those outings came vs. these Dodgers in Houston back in April. Now Ortiz has become no more than a six-inning pitcher at this point of his career, but that suits the Astros just fine as they are getting fine work out of their bullpen, as that unit has posted a 3.56 ERA over the last 10 games.

I am suggesting a wager on Jose Contreras and the White Sox to get it done again against the Orioles. Since his return from the minors in Charlotte Jose has been solid as hell and at home he's notched 7 starts over 7 innings per outing with a stellar 2.55 era. His opponent is Jeremy Guthrie who has been hounded by inconsistency and has a real bad habit of giving up long nasy bombs at the wrong time. Jose Guillen has to like the way his club has come out of the gate the second half and I cannot see Guthrie slowing them down Sunday.

Profile: Both of these teams have really struggled to hit in this series, mainly because they are two of the worst hitting line-ups in baseball. Both Matt Cain and Zack Duke have pitched well lately also. San Francisco really struggles against lefties, especially on the road. This season they are only hitting .216 against them on the road. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's line-up has been significantly impacted by the barrage of trades. They are only hitting .213 against righties over their last 10 games, and their scoring has dropped off as well. Look for this game to be very low scoring and dominated by pitching.

The Mariners don't score a lot but their pitching and defense have been tremendous. They allow just 4.1 runs per game overall, 3.9 per game in day games and they have given up just 2.6 per game over their last seven. Compare that to the 5.5 per game the Indians allow and 5.7 in day games. Making it more difficult for Cleveland today is the fact that they face Erik Bedard who has posted a 2.63 ERA thus far in 13 games this season. Seattle wins the games they are supposed to win as they are 21-11 this season vs. teams that are at .460 or worse. Cleveland is just 19-31 vs. winning teams. I like the Mariners here.
