Friday's Play

5 Dime - Tampa Bay (Garza) - 1 1/2 Runs over Washington (Stammen)

After losing the final two games of a series at New York earlier this week, Tampa returned home and promptly extended its losing streak to three in a row by falling 4-3 to the Angels on Tuesday. During that three-game slump, the team managed just nine runs and 17 hits total. But the Rays re-discovered their power by belting LA the past two nights by a combined 20-6 score, improving their record to 8-2 in their last 10 home outings.

Washington opens this round of Interleague play fresh off a 3-2 home win against Cincinnati last night. But the Nationals carry a major league-worst 16-42 record into Tampa, including 24 losses in their last 30 games.

The Nats will give the ball to rookie righthander Craig Stammen, who is making only his fifth career start and second on the road. In 22.1 innings pitched this season, he has a 6.45 ERA despite facing four teams with little power: Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and the Mets twice. Tonight Stammen faces a Tampa line-up that's fourth in the majors with 80 home runs. And the Rays are expected to get a boost with the anticipated return of designated-hitter Pat Burrell from the disabled list following a 29-game absence.

Tampa's Matt Garza is 0-2 in his last four starts despite a 3.65 ERA, a mark that's slightly higher than his 3.38 earned run averaged compiled in seven home outings this season. And although he worked just five innings in Sunday's loss at New York, he held a hot-hitting Yankee line-up to four hits and one run.

Washington has scored more than two runs just twice in its last eight games. That factor, combined with the team's lack of success overall this season plus Stammen's inexperience on the road, is a major consideration in the decision to lay the 1 1/2 runs with Tampa, whose starter, Garza, went 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA in four interleague outings a year ago.

Game: Washington Nationals @ Tampa Bay Rays - Friday June 12, 2009 7:35 pm
Pick: 4 unit(s) TOTAL: Under 9 (-110) (Play of the Day)

Let's start witht he obvious, Washington has just 16 wins on the year and 42 losses. Craig Stammen hurls for them tonight and I'm taking a shot on the young man to have a bounce-back today. Bear in mind he gave up 5 runs in 5 innings in his last outing against the Mets and he lost 0-7. If he hopes to continue to pitch in this rotation, he needs a quality start today and I think he likely gets it against a Rays team that although is potent has yet to see him. Hence, he gets the grace period early on. MLB.com has reported since the start of this year that Garza was the most talented of the Rays' pitchers and he has really come into his own winning his last 7 of 8 starts. But, in ihs last 4 starts, he is 0-2 despite pitching relatively well. I look for him to continue to pitch well to seek that "W" that he has been look for roughly 2 weeks now. The Under is 9-0 when the Nats face a right handed starter of late and the Under is 8-2-1 when the Rays are favored.

*300 Cleveland Indians -115

Loads of trends pointing to a Tribe win tonight. Here are a few.

The Cardinals are 5-17 since May 05, 2004 as a dog after a win in which they had fewer team-left-on-base than their opponent as a favorite .
The Cardinals are 5-15 SU since 2005 Season on the road after a win in which they drew 1 or fewer walks.
Other trends totaling 41-12 SU in favor of the Indians winning.

MONSTER 100,000* INTERLEAGUE GAME OF THE YEAR Plus Bonus Lock
Your winners here are on:
1. 100,000♦ Braves
2. 50,000♦ Blue Jays MINUS 1 1/2 RUNS

1. Tommy Hanson has all of the makings of being a future All-Star, if not a Cy Young award winner. I do realize that he is still somewhat raw and showed it against the Brewers in his debut last week as Ryan Braun lit him up a few times but to get him and what is clearly the superior Brave team here at around a pick is a semi steal and a must play.I have no issues with some of the Oriole players as there is talent with Markakis, Roberts, Scott and a few others but Bobby Cox boasts the far more well balanced team thanks in part to the clear superior bullpen led by three potential closers in Gonzalez, Soriano and Moylan and with a red hit Chipper Jones along with Brian McCann, Nate McClouth and Yunel Escobar the Braves lineup is better than what it has been showing of late.Don't get me wrong the Bravos are a team that can crap on themselves and be offensively challenged at times as we saw just that the last two days against the Pirates. This is not the Braves of the late 90's or early 00's I fully understand that but Jason Berken, he of the 9 earned runs in his last game and he of the 8 BB to 5 K in his three starts is going to get hit today and to be able to get the Braves with Hanson and not really have to lay anything in this situation is a total steal. Is it a dead on mortal lock? No it's not but for the most part the visitors have the better everything and even on the road and with a DH I'm all about the visitors from Hotlanta.

2. Roy Halladay is an absolute beast and against the skidding and beat up Marlins at home I just don't see anything but another Halladay gem leading to another solid Toronto win.Ricky Nolasco can be good but he can also be fairly awful. We have seen both siders of him this season but more times it's been the bad side. Here up North and against what has been a pretty solid lineup led by guys like Hill, Wells, Rios, Lind and Overbay I just do not see Nolasco looking all too good in this thing. Teams that are used to facing Halladay look terrible against him even after some adjustments and now in this Interleague spot this game could be a total disaster for the Marlins as injuries to Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu cannot help matters, even if those guys are able to go in this game after not starting in the 6-5 loss yesterday.
