Rice Owls -3 1/2 (Buy 1/2 Point to -3) 4-Units

Ok guys, here goes our first 4-Unit release for the 2008 college football season. The Rice Owls return the majority of a high powered offense that set numerous school records, and averaged 495 yards a game over their last 7 games last season. There are no questions concerning the offense. There is a big question mark concerning the defense, however. Last season, the Owls defense was riddled with injuries from the very first game of the season. The injuries were so extent, that at one point they were forced to use stand out receiver James Casey at the defensive end position. Even after using 10 defensive starting lineups last season, the Owls still managed to be at the top of C-USA in the turnover margin. The Owls will be facing an SMU Mustang team that is expected to have a huge turnaround in head coach June Jones first season. Jones comes from Hawaii where he is known for turning out strong quarterbacks that put up points in a hurry. Let's get the right to the point here. Jones will be starting a true freshman under center. They will also be starting 13 true freshman on its two deep roster on Friday night. Jones is clearly building for the future. Look for many common freshman mistakes in Junes new offense. Keep in mind that the home team is 10-2 ATS in the last 12 meetings, and that Rice has went 6-0 ATS in its last 6 meetings at home vs SMU.

Take the Rice Owls -3 1/2 for 4-Units!

BRANDON LANG

10 Dime Rice (We're buying the hook down in this game, so if your bookmaker has -3-1/2 on the Owls, buy this 1/2-point down and lay just 3 points.)

THE MILLER GROUP

San Diego Chargers @ San Francisco 49ers
PICK: San Francisco 49ers

In the final week of the preseason the majority of teams will elect to rest their starters, and this matchup between the Chargers and 49ers is no exception.

However, there is a contrast in the gameplans of these combatants. Norv Turner has already seen what he needs to out of his team. They've managed to win two of their first three warm-up games, and with very few position battles going on, this will be nothing more than a 'going through the motions' type of affair as far as they're concerned. Remember, they're playing on an extremely short week after hitting the field on Monday night against Seattle.

The 49ers have been idle since last Thursday, and there's still plenty on the line for a number of players. Mike Nolan and the rest of the 49ers staff have some big decisions to make this weekend as they make their final cuts. Reports out of camp indicate that there are no fewer than 10 players on the bubble, and they're not all battling for third-string roles either.

While J.T. O'Sullivan will only see a series of two of action at quarterback, Alex Smith should see a good chunk of action. He was efficient under center last week, and can still leave an impression on Nolan and push O'Sullivan for that number one job should he falter in Week 1.

You can expect to see a lot from Chargers third-string QB Charlie Whitehurst as he is expected to take the majority of the snaps tonight. Of course, Ladainian Tomlinson will remain on the sidelines, as will the rest of the Chargers starters. We'll grab the more motivated team laying less than a field goal in this spot. Take San Francisco (3*).
