December 10th, 2007
Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The Milwaukee Brewers officially signed right-handed pitcher Eric Gagne to a one-year contract, general manager Doug Melvin announced Monday.
The 31-year-old reliever spent last season with the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox. In 34 games with the Rangers, he had 16 saves before being shipped to the BoSox at the trade deadline. After the trade, Gagne struggled, going 2-2 with a 6.75 earned run average.
Gagne, who has battled several injuries throughout his nine-year career, has 177 saves with a 3.31 ERA in 352 regular season games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rangers and Red Sox. He also won the 2003 National League Cy Young Award, and an All-Star from 2002-04.
"Eric's saves numbers speak for themselves," Melvin said. "This signing provides a proven closer who will be an integral part of our rebuilt bullpen. We are very pleased to add Eric to our ball club."
According to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Gagne's deal is worth $10 million plus incentives.
