Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Josh Johnson, Miami Marlins (2-3, 4.82 ERA)

Johnson was a nightmare for his supporters early this season, but seems to be rounding into form now. He has won two straight starts and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in his three trips to the hill, while striking out 16 batters during that stretch. Johnson supporters are down just 0.59 units heading into Friday’s start.

Bruce Chen, Kansas City Royals (3-4, 4.17 ERA)

Chen lost each of his first four starts before turning it around to win three straight. He has only been hit hard twice this season and is working on a 2.75 ERA in his last three while striking out 16 and walking four. The Royals are finally giving him some run support, averaging 4.7 runs during his winning streak which is up from an average of 2.9 runs on the year.

Slumping

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (3-4, 4.47 ERA)

Kennedy allowed six earned runs in his shortest outing of the season last weekend, going just 4 1/3 innings before getting the hook. The Diamondbacks have lost each of his last five starts, though he was hardly to blame for the first two. Kennedy’s last three starts have been a different story, with the California native giving up 14 earned runs and five dingers over that span.

Anthony Swarzak, Minnesota Twins (0-3, 4.73 ERA)

Swarzak was demoted to the bullpen after three tough starts to begin the season, but the Twins are putting him back in the rotation as they search for some major starting pitcher help. He lost each of his first three starts while posting a 6.75 ERA and giving up five home runs. In his last relief appearance, he yielded two runs over 2 1/3 during a blowout loss to Milwaukee.

Washington - Atlanta Series Preview
Sportspic.com

With every game and every series, the reality appears to be setting in, these Nationals with the best pitching staff in the majors (2.92 ERA) are for real. A solid 26-18 (+$558) campaign split between 15-8 (+$460) at home, 11-10 (+$98) on the road added to a 14-4 spurt to end last season the Washington Nationals have now posted a smart 39-22 mark stuffing +$1840 into betting accounts.

This weekend Nationals strut their stuff in Atlanta hoping to increase their N.L. East lead. First pitch in the battle for top spot is set for Friday at 7:35 EST. If probable pitchers hold, Detwiler opens against Hudson followed by Strasburg vs. Minor with Gonzalez and Beachy heading to the bump in Sunday's finale.

Braves look solid for the opener. Hudson off another gem shutting out Rays last time out has a 14-3 life-time mark vs Washington over 23 starts (16-7 TSR). Saturday, Nats should have little trouble giving Strasburg enough run support as Braves lefty Minor has been a disaster giving up 11 yard-ball, 31 runs last five on the mound. In what should be a rubber match Sunday night expect a pitcher duel. Gonzalez (6-1, 1.98 ERA, 8-1 TSR) rock solid with his new club enters on a 4-0 stretch allowing just 6 runs over 25 innings and brings to the bump a 3-1 road mark with a 2.70 ERA. Beachy (5-2, 1.77 ERA, 6-3 TSR) suffering a rare loss last outing is a perfect 2-0 at home with a miniscule 0.78 ERA over three starts (2-1 TSR).

Head-to-Head, the clubs spit 18 meetings in '2011 with the total flying 'Over' in 11 encounters including 6-2-1 O/U in Atlanta.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Philadelphia Phillies at St Louis Cardinals

It has been a tough two months for the Philadelphia Phillies. Expected to compete for a sixth consecutive division title, the Phillies are stuck in the National League East basement. Philadelphia won a slugfest with Cardinals in the opener of this four game set but it'll be a little tougher Friday when they send lefty Cliff Lee to the hill against right-hander Kyle Lohse. Philly has provided Lee (0-2, 2.66 ERA) with just 2.3 runs per/game over his six starts (1-5 TSR). On the flips side, Cardinals the N.L.'s top run producers (5.25) plate 4.9 runs/game when Lohse starts resulting in a smart 5-1 record for the hurler over nine starts (7-2 TSR). Look for Cardinals to even the series as they're on a 5-1 stretch off a loss handing the ball to Lohse, 10-4 stretch vs a left-handed starter. Keep in mind, Phillies are on a 1-6 skid w/Lee, 1-2 vs Cardinals with the lefty and that the southpaw has a 6-12 road team start record in May.
