Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (8-2, 2.05 ERA)

The 6-foot-6 lefty is garnering comparisons to Randy Johnson and you can see why looking at his track record over the last month. He is 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA over his last five outings and has struck out seven batters in all but one of those starts. Sale also leads the AL in ERA and batting average allowed (.188) and has earned his supporters 4.47 units this year.

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (2-3, 2.31 ERA)

Since the Cubs bailed him out for once in a no-decision against the Padres at the end of last month, Dempster has been repaying the favor. He hasn’t allowed a run since, going 2-0 with nine strikeouts and one walk over 15 innings of work. The Cubs are averaging 8.7 runs in his last three, up from 4.0 runs on the year.

Slumping

Anthony Bass, San Diego Padres (2-6, 4.38 ERA)

Bass owned a 2.94 ERA over his first eight starts of the season, but has allowed 19 runs over his last four outings, failing to pitch through the sixth inning in any of those. Getting out of jams is Bass’ big bugaboo with most of the problems coming after the fifth inning. San Diego pitching coach Darren Balsley recently said mechanics aren’t to blame.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (2-4, 3.79 ERA)

Arroyo ran into some more bad fortune in his last start that saw him allow just two runs over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Detroit. Both of those runs came from solo homers and he’s allowed three dingers in his last two outings. The Reds have dropped four of his last five starts.

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers sport the majors' best record overall (40-24) and at home (22-11) but have not enjoyed much success in Interleague play this season (3-3). A deeper dive shows Dodgers are one of the worst the past five plus seasons posting a 32-51 mark split between 17-24 at Chavez Ravine, 15-27 on the road. Friday, the Dodgers hope to improve their Interleague record when the Chicago White Sox pay a visit. Tough one, Pale Hose are one of the best vs the Senior Circuit and will head into L.A. having won 58-of-99 including a 31-20 mark away from Chicago. Pale Hose open this three game set with Chris Sale (8-2, 2.05 ERA) ridding a 5-0 streak with a miniscule 0.98 ERA and on a perfect 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in road starts. Look for Pale Hose to move to 10-3 as road underdogs, Dodgers to fall to a 3-10 vs White Sox, 8-25 in Interleague games swinging at a left-handed starter including 4-13 at home.

NY Yankees at Washington Nationals

N.L. East Leading Washington Nationals tearing through the American League sweeping both Boston Red Sox at Fenway and Blue Jays up in Toronto outscoring the pair 31-16 return to the comfort of Nationals Park Friday for a three-game interleague series against A.L. East leading New York Yankees. The Nationals (38-23) will face a stiff test in this series as Yankees (36-25) have suddenly caught fire winning 15-of-19 going into Wednesday action including 5 straight over Mets, Braves defeating the two Senior Circuit clubs 27-11.

If probable pitching holds Washington has one of their best opening the series in Gio Gonzalez (8-2, 2.35 ERA). The lefty off a solid 6.1 innings of 3 hit, 2 run ball in a win over Red Sox is a smart 3-1 with a miniscule 1.93 ERA at home. A knock if there is one, Gonzalez as a member of A's did not have success vs Yankees going 1-4 in five starts giving up 25 hits, 21 runs over 24.6 innings of work. Yankees are scheduled to counter with Phil Hughes (6-5, 4.76 ERA) who stymied Mets last time out notching his second straight victory. Hughes has never faced Washington but does head to the hill 3-1 in 4 starts vs N.L. teams split between 3-0 at Yankee Stadium, 0-1 on the road.

Saturday, Jordan Zimmermann (3-5, 2.91 ERA) gets the call for Washington and possibly opposed by Andy Pettite (3-2, 2.81 ERA). Zimmermann has never had to contend with Yankee bats in his career but the Nationals are 3-1 at home with the hurler when facing A.L. teams. Pettitte tagged with a no-decision in his last start vs Mets heads to the mound with a 13-5 team start record vs N.L. clubs since returning to Yankees back in '07.

The finale could feature Edwin Jackson (3-3, 3.02 ERA) and Ivan Nova (8-2, 4.64 ERA) on respective mounds. However, keep a close eye out for Washington switching starters as Jackson a former White Sox, Tiger, Ray is on an 0-6 team slide vs Yankees. Nova blanking Braves over 7 innings last outting now sports an impressive 5-1 team start record vs N.L. clubs. Yankees 6-0 away with Nova this season are on a 12-2 stretch away from Yankee Stadium with the hurler.
