Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-2, 3.52 ERA)

If you haven’t been riding Burnett’s hot streak, you’ve missed out on a pile of cash. Pittsburgh has won each of his last eight starts and he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of those outings while serving up only four homers during that stretch. However, the veteran did allow two of those dingers in his last trip to the hill, a 9-2 win over Cleveland.

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (3-2, 2.77 ERA)

Pettitte looks as dependable as he’s ever been on the hill with the Yankees winning five of his last six starts. He allowed more than two earned runs just once over that span – his lone loss – and is working on a 1.77 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP in his last three. He makes his first start against the Mets at Citi Field on Friday.

Slumping

Jair Jurrjens, Atlanta Braves (0-2, 9.37 ERA)

Jurrjens makes his return to the bigs after a long stint in the minors here, but we wanted to remind you how bad he was before he was sent down. He didn’t pitch into the sixth inning in any of his four starts earlier with the Braves and had eight strikeouts compared to 10 walks in 16 1/3 innings. In the minors he allowed nine runs in one start and 11 in another, finishing with a 5.27 ERA in 11 trips to the hill.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (2-8, 6.19 ERA)

The Giants keep sending Lincecum out there every fifth day despite his troubles. After holding the Diamondbacks to one earned run in a loss on May 30, he has allowed 14 runs and seven walks over his last three. He’s cost his supporters 11.48 units already this season.

Friday's Interleague Tips
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Interleague play wraps up this weekend before the next round comes in October for the World Series. The theme for the Friday card is a handful of veteran pitchers looking to get on track before heading into the dog days of summer. One of those former Cy Young Award winners is actually seeking his first win of the season in the City of Brotherly Love.

Rays at Phillies

Tampa Bay is making its first trip back to Citizens Bank Park after losing Game 5 of the 2008 World Series to Philadelphia. These two teams are currently going in different directions as the Phillies try to dig out of a last-place hole, while the Rays attempt to cut a short deficit inside the AL East behind the Yankees.

Cliff Lee (0-3, 3.48 ERA) is making his 11th start of the season, but somehow the Phillies have struggled with the southpaw on the mound by winning just three times in his outings. Each of his last three trips to the mound have been decided by one run apiece, including a 6-5 setback at Toronto in which he allowed a season-high 12 hits and five earned runs in seven innings. Lee shut down the Rays twice as a member of the Rangers in the 2010 ALDS, giving up a total of two earned runs in two starts, including a victory in the series-clinching Game 5 at Tropicana Field.

The Rays send out James Shields (7-4, 3.72 ERA), who has picked up only one victory in his last seven starts. Shields is fresh off a no-decision last Saturday, as the Rays dropped a 15-inning decision to the Marlins as $1.35 home favorites, even though the righty allowed three runs (no earned) in 7.2 innings of work. Tampa Bay has cashed the 'under' in five of Shields' seven road starts, while the Rays own a solid 5-2 record in his outings away from Tropicana Field.

Braves at Red Sox

Atlanta looks to stay on a winning track on Friday night after taking the final two games at Yankee Stadium over a red-hot New York club. Boston is slowly heating up as the Red Sox captured their third straight interleague series by knocking off the Marlins twice at Fenway Park, as Bobby Valentine's team has won six of seven games.

The Braves lost young ace Brandon Beachy to Tommy John surgery, as Jair Jurrjens heads back into the Atlanta rotation. Jurrjens (0-2, 9.37 ERA) makes his first start since April 23, as the righty was immediately demoted to Triple-A Gwinett after putting together four consecutive non-quality outings. Heading to the minors didn't help matters for the former All-Star, who compiled a 5.27 ERA in nine starts at Gwinett. The Braves lost both of Jurrjens' starts against the Red Sox in 2009, including a 6-5 defeat at Fenway Park as a short underdog.

Jon Lester (4-4, 4.53 ERA) isn't exactly the best bet this season when pitching at home, putting together a 1-2 mark and ERA of 5.98 at Fenway (2-5 team record). Four of those defeats have come as a $1.45 favorite or higher, including an interleague loss to the Nationals on June 10 by a 4-3 count. Lester rebounded from that setback with a 4-3 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, while cashing for the fourth time in his last five road starts. These two clubs are meeting for the first time since 2009, when the Red Sox grabbed four of six meetings from the Braves, including two of three at Fenway.

Rockies at Rangers

It's a battle of the haves against the have-nots in Arlington, as Texas attempts to improve on a league-best 43-27 record as well as extend its winning streak to seven. Colorado can't catch a break in interleague action, posting a disappointing 1-11 mark against American League competition with the only win coming in extra innings at Detroit. The Rangers will turn to an old arm making his season debut in the Texas heat.

Roy Oswalt signed with the Rangers in late May after spending last season in Philadelphia. The former Astros standout made four minor league starts, including a victory for Triple A-Round Rock on Sunday. Last season, the Phillies lost six times as a $1.50 favorite or higher with Oswalt on the mound, including a pair of defeats when laying at least $2.00. Oswalt has lost each of his last five starts at Ameriquest Field since 2005, but he also was given a grand total of six runs in support as a member of the Astros.

The Rockies counter with rookie Christian Friedrich (4-3, 5.60 ERA), who looks to build some consistency after losing at Detroit in his last start. Friedrich has turned in three road starts (2-1) in which he has allowed one earned run or less, but also the southpaw has given up five earned runs or more in three other outings (all at home). Even though Colorado has struggled for most of this season, the Rockies own a 7-4 record on Fridays, including a 4-1 mark away from Coors Field.

Giants at Athletics

Who would have thought one of the hottest teams in June is the Oakland A's? Bob Melvin's club is riding a 7-1 run, while winning three consecutive interleague series over the Rockies, Padres, and Dodgers. San Francisco heads back to the Bay Area after dropping two of three to the Angels, as their diminutive Cy Young Award winner hopes to get back in the win column.

Tim Lincecum (2-8, 6.19 ERA) is winless in his last nine starts, including a defeat in his hometown of Seattle last Saturday, 7-4 as $1.15 road favorite. Lincecum has put together just one quality start in this stretch, while the Giants are 1-6 in his seven road outings this season. The last time Lincecum faced the A's on May 20 at AT&T Park, the righty allowed four earned runs in four innings of a 6-2 loss. San Francisco is 2-1 in his three career starts at O.Co Coliseum, while losing to the A's last June, 5-2.

The A's send out Jarrod Parker (3-3, 2.82 ERA), who has given up one earned run or less in four of his last five trips to the mound. Parker's last home start came against the Rangers, as the right-hander pitched a gem by allowing just one hit in eight scoreless innings of a 12-1 blowout of the two-time defending AL champions. This is only the third time Parker is listed as a favorite, as the A's lost as 'chalk' on the road to the Twins and Giants, including an 8-6 defeat at AT&T Park last month.

Brewers - White Sox Series Preview
Sportspic.com

The Milwaukee Brewers knew that the loss of Prince Fielder would have an adverse affect on their lineup. However, the Brewers still rank 10th in the majors in runs scored, even despite sitting six games below .500 and fourth in the National League Central division. Milwaukee has not been able to overcome inconsistencies with its pitching staff, and that could lead to more sports betting troubles when they play a Chicago White Sox offense that ranks seventh in runs scored.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Friday, 8:10 PM ET

One bright spot so far for the Brewers has been the play of Michael Fiers, who has actually been better on the road than at home so far this season. The 27-year old Fiers has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings on the road, compared to eight runs over 11 innings at home, and Milwaukee has to be hoping he can remain solid in the opener at Chicago. The White Sox will counter with 23-year old left-hander Chris Sale, who is 8-2 with a 2.46 ERA, but is coming off of his worst start of the season. Sale had won five-straight while holding opponents to two runs or less in each of them, before giving up five in just 5.2 innings of work against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even if Fiers pitches well, the Brewers could be in trouble with Sale on the mound for the White Sox.

Pick: Chicago White Sox

Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Saturday, 7:15 PM ET

The brightest spot for Milwaukee in terms of pitching this season has been Zack Greinke, who leads the team in ERA with a 3.10 mark, and that includes the relief staff as well. Greinke is 7-2 and has looked good in his last two starts despite losing both of them, but should be fine to bounce back with a win if he can get a little run support. That shouldn’t be a problem with Phillip Humber on the mound for Chicago. The White Sox pitcher has an ERA of 6.01 on the season, and has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last three sportsbook starts.

Pick: Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Sunday, 2:10 PM ET

Veteran Randy Wolf will get the call to close out the series for the Brewers, but with a 5.11 ERA on the season, it’s not looking too pretty. The 35-year old has really struggled this season, with two wins in 14 MLB betting starts, and faces another unfavorable matchup to close out this one. The White Sox will send Jose Quintana to the mound, and while he has taken time adjusting to his role as a starter, his 1.53 ERA isn’t bad at all. Quintana hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in any appearance this season, and if he hits that mark again in the series finale, he will help Chicago close out the series with a win as pitching struggles continue to hurt the Brewers.

Pick: Chicago White Sox

Yankees - Mets Series Preview
Sportspic.com

The second Subway Series matchup of the season takes place at Citi Field this weekend when the Mets welcome the Yankees. The first round in the Bronx was all Bombers' as they swept the series outscoring Metropolitans 18-7. The sweep brought Yankees mark to 10-5 the past the past two plus years with the total staying 'Under' in 10-of-15 meetings. Going back to '2007 Yankees have a 20-13 (14-19 O/U) edge split between 11-7 (10-8 O/U) as host, 9-6 (4-11 O/U) as visitor.

Toeing the rubber in the opener for Mets, Jonathon Niese (4-3, 3.82 ERA). The southpaw allowing four earned in a losing effort Saturday vs Cinci is 0-1 in two starts vs Yankees (0-2 TSR). He'll be opposed by Andy Pettitte (3-2, 2.77 ERA). Pettitte in a June groove posting a 1-0 with a sparkling 1.77 ERA over three starts (3-0 TSR) heads to the mound with a 13-6 Team Start Record vs Mets split between 10-5 wearing a Yankee uniform, 3-2 as a member of the Houston Astros. Edge Yankees.

Saturday, Chris Young 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in three starts since returning from shoulder surgery gets the nod for Mets. The right-hander last faced Yankees in '05 as a member of the Rangers (1-1 TSR). Yankees counter with Ivan Nova (9-2, 4.32 ERA) ridding a smart 5-0 stretch including a 3-0 mark in June with a miniscule 0.79 ERA. Nova is 1-0 in two career starts vs Mets (2-0 TSR). Look for Yankees to move to 12-2 this season with Nova, 7-1 in interleague play with the hurler.

Must-see Sunday night finale features R.A. Dickey (11-1, 2.00 ERA) and Yankees C.C. Sabathia (9-3, 3.55 ERA) on respective mounds. Dickey has not only spun back-2-back complete game 1 hit gems, the Mets are on a sparkling 9-0 streak vs the Junior Circuit with the right-hander including 2-0 vs Yankees. The Yankees' ace threw his first complete game of the season his last time out and brings to the mound a smart 8-1 Interleague Team Start Record stretch with the Yankees. Sabathia did not pitch in the first leg of the Subway Series, but is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA against the Mets in his career. Plenty of reason to back either team/hurler. But with Dickey 3-0 (0.00 ERA) last three, 6-0 (1.20 ERA) at Citi Field this season, 5-0 (1.20 ERA) in night games sticking with the flutterball expert and Mets has merit.
