Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers (10-3, 3.24 ERA)

The Rangers’ big lefty has been close to perfect lately, holding his opposition scoreless in four of his last five starts. He has allowed just one run in that stretch spanning 27 1/3 innings. Harrison was forced to leave his last outing after five innings after experiencing back tightness, but is expected to be ready to go Friday against Oakland.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (8-4, 2.52 ERA)

After a short slump, Verlander is back to his normal form. He has rebounded from three straight losses by helping the Tigers to wins in each of his last four turns in the rotation. Verlander hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of those outings and is coming off a complete-game 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh that saw him strike out seven and walk one.

Slumping

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (0-4, 3.72 ERA)

The Phillies have lost four consecutive games with Lee on the hill as the veteran continues to search for his first win of the season. His ERA is up to 5.10 over his last seven outings and he has uncharacteristically given up four leads during that span. Lee has allowed 14 runs over his last three.

Paul Maholm, Chicago Cubs (4-6, 5.38 ERA)

The Cubs have won just one of Maholm’s last eight starts and the last time he actually landed in the win column was way back on May 9. The lefty worked just 3 1/3 innings in his last outing, getting smacked around for six earned runs on nine hits while walking three. The Cubs average just 3.4 runs in his starts this season.

Friday's MLB Tips
By Brian Edwards

Nationals at Braves

Washington (43-31, +1135) comes to Turner Field leading the National League East. The Nationals dropped an 11-10 decision in 11 innings Wednesday when Colorado got an RBI single from Marco Scutaro. Davey Johnson’s team had rallied from a 7-0 deficit and forced extra innings thanks to rookie Bryce Harper’s game-tying homer in the ninth.

Atlanta (40-35, +346) bounced back from back-to-back losses at Boston over the weekend to win the first two games of its series against Arizona. The Braves spanked the Diamondbacks by an 8-1 count in the opener of the three-game set. Freddie Freeman provided all the offense needed for Tim Hudson with a 3-for-5 effort and a pair of RBIs. Hudson worked eight strong innings, giving up just one run while fanning seven batters.

Fredi Gonzalez’s squad beat Arizona 6-4 on Tuesday night to hook up run-line supporters with a generous payout in the plus-160 range. The hot-hitting Jason Heyward, who has recently been moved to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, popped his 12th home run of the season and improved his average to .282. Chipper Jones also went yard for the sixth time this year.

Atlanta allowed a 2-0 lead to get away in last night's 3-2 loss to Arizona. The Braves failed to complete the sweep due to Chris Young's ninth-inning homer to untie the game. Jones went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks to improve his batting average to .293.

Gonzalez will give the starting nod to RHP Randall Delgado, who is 4-8 with a 4.52 ERA. Delgado is 2-4 with a 3.59 ERA in seven home starts. The ‘under’ is 8-5-1 in his 14 starting assignments.

Ross Detwiler (4-3, 3.09) is 1-2 with a 2.81 ERA in road appearances as both a starter and reliever. The lefty has made 10 starts and come out of the bullpen six times. Totals have been an overall wash (5-5) in Detwiler’s starts.

Atlanta owns a 13-15 record against southpaws.

The ‘over’ had hit in four straight games for the Braves before last night's 'under' emergence. They have seen the ‘over’ go 37-35 overall, 18-16 in their home games.

The Nats have watched the ‘under’ go 35-34 overall, 21-16 in their road assignments.

Most books are listing Atlanta as a minus-125 favorite with a total of 8 ½ ‘over’ (minus-120). The Braves can be had on the run line (minus 1 ½ runs) for a monster return in the plus-170 range (risk $100 to win $170).

White Sox at Yankees

Most spots are listing New York (46-29, +639) as a minus-130 ‘chalk’ with a total of 10 ½ flat (minus-110 either way). The Yankees are plus-150 on the run line.

Chicago (41-35, +456) rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the ninth inning to beat the Yankees 4-3 as a plus-165 underdog last night in the Bronx. The White Sox won the opener of this four-game set thanks to Dayan Viciedo’s three-run homer off of David Robertson in the ninth. Alex Rios made a leaping catch at the wall in right field off a deep Derek Jeter liner to end the game, preserving closer Addison Reed’s 11th save.

Joe Girardi’s club had its five-game winning streak snapped last night but still leads the AL East by five games over the second-place Orioles. The Yankees are 23-15 at home this year.

The White Sox have won three consecutive games and are now 22-14 on the road. They lead second-place Baltimore by 2 ½ games in the AL Central.

New York RHP Adam Warren will make his major-league debut tonight. Warren has compiled a 5-5 record and 3.86 ERA at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes this year.

Jose Quintana (2-1, 1.25) will take the bump for the White Sox. The left-hander is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA on the road this season.

The Yankees are 15-8 against southpaws.

The ‘under’ is 42-31 overall for the Yankees, 23-14 in their home games.

The ‘under’ is 37-36 overall for the White Sox, 21-13 in their road outings.

Washington at Atlanta

Coming off their highest-scoring series of the season platting 33 runs Washington looks to build a bigger cushion in the N.L. East when they head into Atlanta for a three-game set against Braves. If probable pitchers hold the Nationals who have won 4-of-5 meetings this season vs Atlanta including 3-0 at Turner Field should take 2-of-3 increasing their position on top of the division. GM-1, the Nationals pin their hopes on Detwiler (4-3, 3.09 ERA) who hasn’t allowed a run in his last 12.1 innings pitched as a starter/reliever. Braves countering with Delgado (4-8, 4.52 ERA) who is winless in three and off a career-short 1 1/3 innings last time out giving up 4 runs the Nationals should walk off with a 'W'. Saturday appears to be easier for Nats as they hook Strasburg (9-2, 2.60 ERA) against Minor (3-6, 6.14 ERA). Strasburg already 2-0 vs Braves this season allowing just 4 runs over 12.0 innings will have another dominant performance handing Braves a seventh loss in eight with Minor and a fourth consecutive loss vs Washington with the southpaw. The finale featuring Gio Gonzalez (10-3, 278 ERA) and Tim Hudson (6-3, 3.58 ERA) will be a pitcher duel and one Braves could steal. Little doubt Gonzalez has shown his worth since joining Washington. However, the lefty smacked hard last time out giving up 2 yard-ball 5 runs over 6.0 innings may be suspect and could fall to 1-2 vs Braves. On the other mound, Hudson has completed at least eight innings in two of his past four starts posting a 3-1 mark and will enter with a sparkling 14-4 record vs Washington with Braves 16-8 over his 24 life-time starts.
