Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Ben Sheets, Atlanta Braves (2-0, 0.00 ERA)

It’s only two starts but if you’re a Braves backer, you have to be ecstatic with the early results from this former Milwaukee ace. Sheets held the Nationals off the board despite giving up five hits and three walks over six innings pitched.

“It’s been a huge pickup for us,” Atlanta catcher Brian McCann told reporters following Sheets’ last outing. “To come out here for his two starts and pitch the way he has. Hasn’t given up a run, he’s pounding the zone and the more you’re around him the more you know why he’s so successful. He’s a competitor, he knows what he’s doing.”

Carlos Villanueva, Toronto Blue Jays (5-0, 2.86 ERA)

Normally a spot starter/long-inning relief guy, Villanueva has been making the best of his chance to stick in the Jays’ starting rotation. The 28-year-old righty is 3-0 in his last three starts and carries a 1.47 ERA over the three-start stretch.

SLUMPING

Scott Diamond, Minnesota Twins (8-4, 3.16 ERA)

Diamond was the only reliable starter in the Twins’ five-man staff but he’s been banged around a bit in each of his last two appearances. The southpaw relies on groundball outs and he hasn’t been getting them, giving up nine combined runs in his last 12 innings on the bump.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (4-5, 4.33 ERA)

Wood gets the call instead of an ailing Matt Garza Friday. His last two starts have been disastrous, giving up a total of 14 earned runs on 17 hits over just 10 2-3 innings of work. Wood has served up four home runs in that span and has allowed five dingers in his last three outings.

Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

The Washington Nationals have shown no sign of faltering heading into the fifth month of the season. Sporting the best rotation in the league (3.20 ERA) along with a relief staff allowing a miniscule 1.23 runs/game the Nationals after yesterday's 8-2 victory are on a six game win streak and have won 15-of-22 in July. Nationals and Ross Detwiler (5-3, 3.01 ERA) will look to extend the streak at Miller Park on Friday night. Detwiler off back-2-back quality starts allowing just 2 runs over 14.0 innings has not lost since returning to the rotation helping Nationals post a sparkling 4-1 stretch over the five starts. He'll be opposed by Brewers right-hander Michael Fiers (3-4, 1.96 ERA). Fiers allowed just 2 runs on five hits last outing but was tagged with the loss as Brewers once against failed to provide any offense in falling 2-1 to the Reds. Brew Crew have scored 2 runs or less for the hurler in four of his last five starts posting a 1-4 mark over the span.

Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers

When the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers go at it Friday night with Chris Sale (11-3, 2.37 ERA) and Yu Darvish (11-6, 3.88 ERA) on respective mounds expect a pitching duel. The Pale Hose left-hander off a rare hiccup last outing which saw his eight game win streak halted at Detroit has allowed two runs or fewer in 12 of his 17 starts and gone at least seven frames in ten of those starts including 7.1 innings of 5 hit, 1 run ball in a victory over Texas. Sale heads to the hill with a solid 6-1 (3.08 ERA) road mark over 9 starts (6-3 TSR). On the other side, Darvish snapping a two game skid last time out tossing 7.0 innings of 3 hit, 2 run ball vs Halos is a sparkling 7-1 with a 3.50 ERA at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Head-Head, Pale Hose have taken 4-of-6 in the series sweeping three on the South Side of Chicago but were 1-of-3 in Texas. Five of the six meetings have played 'Under' with a deeper dive showing 8-of-9 encounters in Texas going 'Under' posted totals. The betting market has Texas -$1.30 favorite with the total set at 9 runs. Note: Texas is 27-19-2 'Under' at home plating 5.03 runs/game, Pale Hose are 29-17-3 'Under' on the road crossing 4.16 runs/game.
