Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (6-4, 2.65 ERA)

The Dodgers have won four of Kershaw’s last six starts, but could have been perfect over that stretch if they gave him a little run support. He allowed just three runs in those two losses. The lefty responded with a win over the Mets, holding them to one earned run in seven innings while striking out nine. He has at least seven strikeouts in five consecutive starts.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (3-3, 3.05 ERA)

Wood hasn’t allowed a run in 18 2/3 innings and has yielded only one run in his last three starts combined. After serving up six homers in a three-start span earlier this season, he has allowed only one dinger in his last six outings. Wood owns a 1.09 WHIP this year.

Slumping

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (2-8, 5.35 ERA)

The Phillies have lost four of Kendrick’s last five starts and he owns a 7.67 ERA over that span. He allowed five runs in the first six batters he faced in his last outing, a 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh. Kendrick has served up 10 homers this season, five in the last four starts, and owns a 8.63 ERA in the first two innings of games this year.

Erik Bedard, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-9, 4.57 ERA)

Bedard was smacked for five runs and two homers in 4 2/3 innings of work in his last trip to the hill and Pittsburgh has lost each of his last four outings. However, he is much better at home than he is on the road. He has given up 32 runs in 43 2/3 innings of work on the road, but owns a 2.31 ERA at PNC Park this season.

What Bettors Need to Know: Yankees at Red Sox
By Covers.com

While there are nearly three full months left in the regular season, the New York Yankees can take a big step toward burying their bitter rival when they visit Fenway Park for a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox starting Friday night. The Yankees have a 5 1/2-game lead atop the American League East and hold a 7 1/2-game cushion over the Red Sox, who are a middling 21-21 at home and were pounded by New York in two meetings at Fenway in April.

The Yankees went 20-7 in June, including a 10-game winning streak, to take control of the division. Robinson Cano has not cooled off in July, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and RBI streak to eight games to help the Yankees avoid a three-game sweep at Tampa Bay. The Red Sox limp home after being swept three games in Oakland to cap a desultory 2-5 road trip. Boston managed only five runs and 16 hits in the three games against the Athletics.

WEATHER: Temperatures are projected to be in the high 70's by game time with the wind blowing out to the Green Monster in left at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Hiroki Kiroda (8-7, 3.17 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Josh Beckett (4-7, 4.06 ERA)

Kuroda tossed a gem last time out, blanking the Chicago White Sox on three hits and tying a career high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings. He has won his last two starts and is 5-1 in his last seven outings, surrendering a total of nine runs during that span. He was a 2-0 loser in his only start against Boston while with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010.

Beckett came off the disabled list to hold the Seattle Mariners to two runs on four hits in six innings last time out, but he remained winless (0-3) in his last five starts. He was outstanding against the Yankees last year, going 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA in five starts. Cano is batting .324 (23-for-71) with three homers, nine doubles and 13 RBIs lifetime against Beckett.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list after aggravating a thumb injury.

2. Cano's RBI streak is three shy of the franchise record shared by Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.

3. The Yankees claimed OF Darnell McDonald on waivers. He was cut loose by the Red Sox at the end of last month.

BETTING NOTES & TRENDS

Under is 7-0 in Red Sox last 7 overall
Yankees are 8-1 in their last 9 games following an off day
Yankees are 2-5 in Kuroda's last 7 road starts
Red Sox are 10-22 in their last 32 home games vs. a team with a winning road record
Red Sox are 0-6 in their last 6 games as an underdog
Red Sox are 0-4 in their last 4 during game 1 of a series

New York at Boston

The Boston Red Sox (42-40) and New York Yankees (49-32) kick off a four-game series this Friday at Fenway Park. The American League East rivals have already played in Boston this season in a rain shortened series that New York swept defeating Red Sox 6-2 and 15-9. Despite the sweep Yankees remain just 17-21 vs Red Sox the past two plus seasons but do have a winning margin in Beantown over the span going 11-9. The opener features Josh Beckett (4-7, 4.06) and Hiroki Kuroda (8-7, 3.17) on respective mound. Beckett winless in five starts (1-4 TSR) did not face New York the first go-round but did win all four starts last year moving his mark to 11-5 vs Yankees as a member of the Red Sox with Boston 18-9 over his 27 starts. Kuroda rolling along has won four of five starts including seven scoreless innings of 11-strikeout ball at home against the Chicago White Sox last time out. The X-Dodger has faced Boston just once in his career but unfortunately took a loss in 2010 at Fenway giving up two runs over seven innings. The Yankees 5-2 opening a series with Kuroda are 10-2 in their past twelve road games. The Red Sox are 1-4 in Beckett's last five starts during game-one of a series, 2-5 last 7 as a favorite with Beckett.

Cubs - Mets Series Preview
Sportspic.com

The New York Mets have been among the pleasant surprises in the National League this season, contending with the Washington Nationals for a division title in the NL East, where the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins were all ranked among the sports betting favorites. The Mets will get an excellent chance to close the gap between them and Washington this MLB Betting weekend with a three-game set against a Chicago Cubs’ team that has the worst record in the majors.

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets Friday, 7:10 PM ET

The Cubs are ranked 29th in the majors in runs scored on offense, a problem magnified by the fact that Chicago’s pitchers rank 25th in the majors in runs allowed. While they have hovered around the .500 mark at home, the Cubs are 11-30 on the road this season, but they have perhaps their most favorable matchup in the series opener. Travis Wood is riding a three-game win streak in which he has allowed just one earned run in 20.2 innings of work, and he pitched seven shutout innings in a 6-1 win over the Mets the last time he faced them. Wood will once again be matched up against Johan Santana, who took the loss in that last meeting despite allowing just two earned runs. Those runs were the only two that Santana has given up in his last 20 innings of work, which has included 14 combined innings of shutout ball against the Orioles and Dodgers. Something has to give when these teams meet again, but don’t expect the Mets to be able to solve Wood.

Pick: Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets Saturday, 4:10 PM ET

New York should be able to do a much better job offensively in the second game of the series, as they go up against Jeff Samardzija for the Cubs. Samrdzija is 6-7 with a 4.77 ERA, but has given up more than four earned runs in three of his last five outings, including allowing nine in just 4.1 innings in a 17-1 loss the last time he pitched against the Mets. Dillion Gee allowed four earned runs in five innings of work in a loss to the Cubs in his last meeting with them, and as long as he can match that effort New York should be able to get him the sports bet win this time around.

Pick: New York Mets

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets Sunday, 1:10 PM ET

The Mets will once again be comfortable on the mound for the series finale with Jonathon Niese on the mound. Niese has gotten the win in each of his last three starts, and has allowed two earned runs or less in five of his last six. Chicago will counter with Chris Volstad and his 7.94 ERA, and with at least four runs allowed in his last seven starts, don’t expect the 25-year old to finally clinch his first sportsbook win as the Mets wrap up the series.

Pick: New York Mets
