Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (15-10, 3.10)

Miley has been sharp in two appearances (one start) against Colorado this season, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA covering 11 innings. He’s turned in a quality start in five of his last six outings, including last Saturday against the Giants when he gave up three runs over seven frames. He's 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four career games (three starts) against the Rockies.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (14-9, 3.77)

Shields is coming off a loss at New York on Saturday, when he surrendered four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. It ended a stretch of eight straight starts in which he permitted three runs or fewer. Shields has turned in two stellar efforts against the Blue Jays this season, limiting them to one run on two hits in eight innings on Aug. 7 and striking out 10 on May 23.

SLUMPING

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (9-12, 4.57)

Porcello has not won since Aug. 7 and has not pitched six full innings in any of his last four starts. The 23-year-old yielded eight hits in 4 2/3 innings to the light-hitting Indians last weekend in a no decision. Porcello was battered around for three runs and 12 hits in just 3 2/3 innings against Minnesota on July 5 and has surrendered a total of 12 runs (eight earned) and 27 hits in 13 2/3 frames across three starts versus the division rivals in 2012.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (12-9, 3.65)

The Giants are hoping Vogelsong returns to form after going 0-2 with a 12.34 ERA in his previous three starts while surrendering 20 hits in 11 2/3 innings over that span. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on over 3 1/3 innings last Sunday against the Diamondbacks, and his ERA has climbed from 2.27 to 3.65 since Aug. 8. He’s 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against San Diego this season.

Friday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

Jarrod Parker (+155), Oakland A’s at New York Yankees: Parker beat the Angels and Orioles in his last two starts, going seven strong innings in each while allowing only one run at Anaheim and two to the O’s. The A’s have won seven of his past eight starts. His one outing against the Yankees this season (July 21) was a 2-1 win, when he went eight innings and allowed only one run.

Cold

Jeff Locke (-120), Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros: He’s made three starts, and the Bucs have lost all three. To add insult to injury, all three of the losses have come against the worst teams in the NL, the Cubs and Astros. The Astros beat him, 5-1, in his first start (Sept. 3), with Locke allowing all five runs.

Ryan Vogelsong (-145), San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres: The Giants have lost his past three starts, with Vogelsong taking the loss in the last two. He’s given up 16 runs combined over the three outings and hasn’t made it out of the fourth in two of them. He also lost his last start against the Padres (Aug. 19), 7-1, making it through only three innings.

C.C. Sabathia (-165), Yankees vs. A’s: This is the time of year Sabathia usually takes it up a notch, but he’s gone the other way this season. The Yankees have lost his past four starts, and Sabathia has been saddled with the loss in three of them. He’s given up nine combined runs over his past two starts. The Yankees are 1-1 behind him against the A’s this season.

Rick Porcello (-185), Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins: One of the bigger mysteries over the past five weeks is why the Tigers can’t score any runs when Porcello pitches. They have lost seven straight behind him, despite Porcello pitching well. In four of his last five starts, the Tigers have lost by one run.
