Friday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (6-8, 3.18)

After winning just three starts in his first five months, Lee is 3-1 in September with a 0.99 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 21 hitters in 16 innings in his past two starts. Lee is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts against Miami this season.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (19-4, 2.74)

Weaver has won his last three starts to keep himself in the Cy Young Award discussion. He held the Chicago White Sox to one run over 6 1/3 innings in his last outing, setting a career high for wins. After losing his first start against the Rangers this year, Weaver has won the last three meetings to improve to 12-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts against Texas.

SLUMPING

A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (6-1, 2.80)

After winning six straight, Griffin has struggled in his last two outings. The 24-year-old rookie permitted nine runs on 15 hits - including four homers - to earn a pair of early exits. Griffin pitched well in his lone outing versus Seattle, allowing one run and striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings in a 6-1 triumph on Sept. 7.

Aaron Cook, Boston Red Sox (4-10, 5.13)

Cook received a no-decision against the Orioles last Saturday despite giving up five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He defeated Tampa Bay in his previous start to end a five-game losing skid. Cook is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA in three starts against Baltimore, all coming this season.

Friday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Here’s a quick look at some MLB pitching lines that may offer some value on Friday.

Hot

Jered Weaver (-110), Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers: He’s won his past three starts, and the Angels need his big arm more than ever as they have six games to go, all on the road. Texas hasn’t been his favorite road mound to pitch off, having lost two of his past three start there, but it is encouraging that he did win his last start in Arlington, on July 31. He’s also got the dangling carrot of the Cy Young award in front of him with this pivotal outing, one that’s essentially a playoff game.

Cliff Lee (-145), Philadelphia Phillies at Miami Marlins: Okay, so maybe he’s not on a win streak like most pitchers mentioned here, but he gets a mulligan for his 2-1 loss against the Braves in his last start because he was just as dominant — if not more — as he was in his previous five starts the Phillies won. He’s gone two straight games with eight innings of work, allowing one earned run and striking out 10. He’s in postseason form with no postseason to show off in. Lee beat the Marlins, 3-1, on Sept. 12.

Jonathon Niese (+150), New York Mets at Atlanta Braves: He’s won his past two starts by identical 7-3 scores, but perhaps his best attribute going for him today is handling the Braves bats better than he does the rest of the league. He’s beat the Braves in four of his past five starts against them dating back to last season. He’s only allowed one run against them in each of his past two starts.

Yovani Gallardo (-270), Milwaukee Brewers vs. Houston Astros:
The Brewers simply ran out of gas down the stretch, losing four of their past six games, virtually eliminating their chances of catching the Cardinals for the second and final NL Wild Card berth. This could be a letdown spot against the pesky Astros, but since they Brewers have won 11 straight behind Gallardo, why would that stop now? He’s won his past five starts against the Astros dating back to last season and has given up only six earned runs over those games.

Ian Kennedy (-205), Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Chicago Cubs: Arizona has won its past five games that Kennedy has started. In the three of those games, he got the decision while allowing only one earned run combined. In his two no-decisions, he gave up nine runs combined, but the Arizona bats came up big, winning by a combined score of 18-13. The Cubs are currently on a five-game losing streak and have lost nine of their last 10.

Jeff Francis (+235), Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers: His last winning decision came against the Dodgers in a 5-0 win at Colorado on Aug. 27, but the Rockies have lost his past four starts. Because of the low pitch counts the Rockies have on their pitchers, it’s kind of hard to get any real feel for betting on or against them. But four straight losses are still four losses, whether three, four of five innings pitched. His opponent, Clayton Kershaw, has lost his last two home starts, but reportedly has no discomfort in his hip.
