Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees (14-6, 3.42)

Sabathia struck out 10 over eight innings in the Yankees’ 8-2 win over the Twins on Wednesday. The lefty has 21 strikeouts and has allowed just two earned runs over his past two starts. He gets the ball in a must-win game against the Red Sox next.

Jarrod Parker, Oakland Athletics (12-8, 3.44)

Parker struck out eight and held the Rangers to three runs over six innings in Wednesday's win. The right-hander has a 2.31 in 35 September innings and has picked up wins in three of his last four starts. He’ll feel the playoff pressure in his next outing against the same Texas squad he faced last time out.

SLUMPING

Clayton Richard, San Diego Padres (14-13, 3.91)

Richard gave up four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings as the Padres fell to the Dodgers 8-2 on Wednesday. The left-hander has surrendered 13 earned runs in only 21 1/3 September innings. His final start comes against the Brewers.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (13-8, 2.86)

Hernandez allowed two runs on five hits in six innings Wednesday at the Angels. King Felix may be feeling the grind of a long season, as he’s winless in his last five starts and is the owner of an ugly 5.70 ERA in September. He draws Los Angeles again in his final start.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

The New York Yankees in a dead-heat with Baltimore Orioles and in no position to squander opportunities will be feeling anxious when they host Boston on Monday. The Red Sox have split six at the Stadium this season and have won 13-of-19 encounters in the Big Apple. If that were not enough, Yankees are on a 1-5 skid vs Boston with C.C. Sabathia touching toe to rubber. However, the left-hander off back-to-back dominant outings against the A's and Twins, in which he allowed two runs in 16 innings with 21 strikeouts looks primed this time around. Helping the cause, Sabathia will be opposed by Clay Buchholz ridding a seven game winless streak that has seen BoSox go 1-6 over the span. Stay home with Yankees knowing they're on a smart 21-6 stretch opening a series with Sabathia and that Red Sox are on a 1-7 slide vs a left-handed starter.

Monday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Here’s a look at some MLB pitching lines that may offer some value on Monday.

C.C. Sabathia (-225), New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox: The Yankees have won Sabathia’s past two starts, and he’s been looking like his former self, going eight innings, allowing two runs or less and striking out 10 or more in each outing. The bad news is that he’s 1-4 with a 6.81 ERA against Boston over his past six starts dating back to last season. We saw the Red Sox lay down against Baltimore over the weekend, but we should expect the opposite from them in the final three games of the season at Yankees Stadium. Misery loves company, and knocking the Yankees into a Wild Card game would put a little joy into Boston’s awful season.

Shaun Marcum (-150), Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres: The Brewers have won Marcum’s past three starts, and he’s gotten progressively better in each. He beat the Reds, 8-1, in his last start, allowing only one run through six innings. He beat the Padres, 9-5, in his last start against them on June 8.

Wade Miley (-190), Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies: Miley’s not doing anything particularly special right now, but he has beat the Rockies in all four of his starts against them dating back to last season. He beat them, 15-5, 10 days ago in Denver.

Matt Cain (-115), San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers: Cain has won his past three starts and has been dominant in doing so, allowing only two combined runs. His last start was a 6-0 win against Arizona. Cain beat the Dodgers in his one start at Dodger Stadium this season, but the Giants lost his two starts against them in San Francisco. The Dodgers will know the Cardinals situation in the Wild Card chase when they take the field tonight and that could affect their play. The Dodgers are two games out with three to play.

Cold

Jeff Locke (+125), Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves: The Pirates lost all five of his starts this season, most of which can be attributed to Locke. But in four of those starts, the Bucs scored only four runs combined. He’s given up five runs in three of those starts, and he didn’t even make it out of the fourth inning in his last outing, Sept. 26 against the Mets.

Jason Berken (-110), Chicago Cubs vs. Houston Astros: He’s made three starts, and the Cubs have lost them all. His worst outing came in his last start, when he lasted only four innings and gave up six runs off nine hits in a 6-0 loss at Colorado.

Bronson Arroyo (+130), Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals: These teams could meet in the playoffs, but if Arroyo doesn’t get back into in his August rhythm, the Reds may not make it very far. The Reds have lost his past three starts, in two of which Arroyo gave up four runs and got tagged with the loss. Prior to the three-game skid, the Reds had won six in a row behind Arroyo. He beat the Cards in his only start against them this season back in April.

Martin Perez (+120), Texas Rangers at Oakland A’s: The Rangers have lost his past four starts, two of which came in the last 11 days. Oakland roughed him up his last time out, on Sept. 26, when he couldn’t even get out of the first inning and was yanked after giving up five runs.

Felix Hernandez (-105), Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels: The M’s have lost his past five starts, including three in a row at home. He looked closer to the pre-September pitcher in his last two starts, allowing only three combined runs, but they still lost. The Angels beat him, 4-3, last week.
