Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox (8-3, 4.93 ERA)

The Red Sox haven’t been able to count much on their rotation but at least Buchholz is keeping them in games. The talented right-hander began the campaign in a major rut but has dug himself out nicely over the last nine weeks.

Buchholz owns a 2.47 ERA since May 27 and the Red Sox are 6-1 in the 27-year-old’s last seven starts. Total bettors will be happy to know that the under is also 6-2 in his last eight trips to the bump.

A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (3-0, 2.25 ERA)

This 24-year-old rookie hurler has got to be wondering what the big deal is about the big show. Griffin has made six starts and all of them have been quality ones. He’s pitched six innings in each appearance and he’s allowed two or fewer runs in five of those six outings.

He’s facing one of the best pitchers in the game on Monday in David Price, so the price should be nice for underdog bettors.

SLUMPING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-7, 5.75 ERA)

The one of the few Blue Jay hurlers who’s actually healthy sure is pitching like something’s bothering him. Romero gave up eight earned runs in just 1 and 1/3 innings work last week against the A’s. It was the fourth time in his last six starts he’d allowed six or more earned runs.

The Jays are 0-6 in Romero’s last six turns in the rotation and the young lefty sports an ugly 29 to 30 strikeout to walk ratio over the last two months.

Trevor Cahill, Arizona Diamondbacks (8-9, 3.86 ERA)

The results haven’t been absolutely dreadful for Trevor Cahill but it would certainly be fair to say the 2012 campaign has been a disappointment for this former 18-game winner.

Cahill, who came to Arizona in an offseason trade with Oakland, 2-4 in his last six decisions and the Diamondbacks were favored in five of those six starts. The righty has just one quality start among his last seven outings.

San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds

Cincinnati sweeping Rockies over the weekend have won ten consecutive games and 14-of-16 (+$1146) since the All-Star break. Off a perfect 6-0 road swing the Reds return to the comfort of Great American Ball Park for a seven game home stand starting with four against San Diego Padres. Reds a solid 31-18 at home should feel pretty comfortable handing the ball to Mike Leake (4-6, 4.12 ERA). Reds have won each of the hurlers last three starts and he's allowed two earned runs or less in six of his last seven trips to the mound. Still, Reds could be ambushed. Padres are countering with Edinson Volquez (6-7, 3.30 ERA). The right-hander has not allowed more than three runs in any of his last six starts, five of which have resulted in San Diego wins including a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati. The betting market has Reds floating between $1.60 to $1.80 favorite with the total set at 8.5 runs.

What Bettors Need to Know: D'backs at Dodgers
By Covers.com

Arizona Diamondbacks (51-51) at Los Angeles Dodgers (56-47)

The Dodgers are riding a wave of momentum as they begin a nine-game homestand against Arizona, which sits 4 1/2 games out of first in the National League West. Los Angeles moved into a first-place tie with San Francisco after sweeping the Giants in three games. It’s a critical series for Arizona, which plays 13 of its next 16 games against teams with winning records. The Diamondbacks believe they have time to make a run at the postseason, but they’ll need to play more consistently starting this week.

The Dodgers outscored San Francisco 19-3 over the weekend, and the team has received an instant spark from Hanley Ramirez, who is 7-for-20 with seven RBIs in five games since being acquired from Miami. Shortstop Luis Cruz has also provided a boost, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs on Sunday to extend his career-high hitting streak to 12 games. Arizona begins the series with a new third baseman after acquiring Chris Johnson from the Astros in exchange for minor league outfielders Bobby Borchering and Marc Krauss.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Trevor Cahill (8-9, 3.86 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Aaron Harang (7-5, 3.39)

Cahill is 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in his last two road starts, and he continues to struggle early in games. He has a 7.65 ERA in the first inning while allowing a first-inning run in 11 starts, including seven straight. Cahill gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Rockies, falling to 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA through five starts in July.

Harang allowed two hits and two runs in 7 1/3 innings Wednesday at St. Louis, and he’s only allowed more than three earned runs once in his last 11 outings. He’s 3-6 with a 2.42 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) lifetime against the Diamondbacks, and catcher Miguel Montero is 7-for-14 with a homer against Harang.

WALK-OFFS

1. Montero has reached base safely in 15 of his last 22 plate appearances, going 9-for-16 (.563) with five walks.

2. Dodgers 1B James Loney had two hits Sunday and leads the team in batting this month with a .328 average (21-for-64).

3. The Diamondbacks are 30-24 at home and 21-27 on the road.

BETTING TRENDS

Diamondbacks are 3-10 in their last 13 road games vs. a right-handed starter
Dodgers are 1-10 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
Under is 7-0-1 in Diamondbacks last 8 Monday games
Under is 8-2 in Cahill's last 10 road starts
Diamondbacks are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings
