Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (12-5, 2.54)

Hernandez followed his perfect game with a 7 2/3 inning gem against the Indians on Tuesday, allowing seven hits and one run for his 12th win of the campaign. Hernandez has an 8-0 record with a 1.53 ERA over his last 13 starts and gets the Twins next in Minnesota on Monday.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (10-7, 3.87)

Arroyo delivered eight innings of two-run ball in Wednesday's win over the Phillies. The right-hander has picked up wins in three consecutive starts, allowing no more than three runs in each of his outings. He has a tough start on the road in Arizona next.

SLUMPING

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (15-4, 3.63)

Burnett allowed 17 baserunners in just 6 1/3 innings of work but managed to give up just four runs against the Padres on Tuesday. After an impressive start to the campaign, the righty has faltered recently giving up 14 earned runs over his last three outings. His next start comes against the Cardinals, a team he has an 11.37 ERA against this season.

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (7-11, 4.84)

Alvarez allowed eight runs on 12 hits over just 4 1/3 innings of an 11-2 loss to Texas in his last outing. The 12 hits and eight runs allowed were both career highs as the righty took a fourth consecutive loss. He tries to get back on track against the Yankees next time out.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

The Blue Birds quest to halt an 0-7 skid may have to wait another day. Blue Jays are scheduled to start Ricky Romero on a career-high 10 game losing streak including 2 losses to the Yankees getting spanked for 9 runs over 13 innings of work. Toronto winless last eight trips into New York, on a 0-5 slide vs Bombers with Romero touching toe to rubber the Jays collapse extends to 0-8 and 3-16 last nineteen on the diamond. (Keep an eye on starters, Jays game PPD Sunday John Farrell could delay Romero's start).

St Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates

Pirates' August swoon continued Sunday as they were spanked 7-0 by visiting Brewers. Pittsburgh on a 9-14 skid this August brings back memories of last August when Bucs tanked to the tune of 8-22 split between 5-12 at PNC Park, 3-10 on the highway. Bucs eight back of Cinci but still in the wild-card hunt one game back will be a little anxious when they play Cardinals on Monday. Scheduled starter A.J. Burnett not in the best of form heads to the hill 1-1 the past three with a whopping 6.75 ERA. Pirates are also well aware that Burnett was spanked for 12 runs over 2 2/3 innings last time he faced Cardinals and has a horrible 3-14 TSR in the month of August. On the flip side, Cardinals Kyle Lohse enters 2-0 his last four on the mound allowing 4 or less hits in each start surrendering just 3 runs over 26 2/3 innings and heads to the hill 8-2 life-time vs Pirates, 6-1 on the road this season, 10-2 in night games

L.A. Dodgers at Colorado Rockies

L.A. Dodgers with it's blockbuster trade hope to close the gap on the San Francisco Giants. Adding Gonzalez (.299, 16 HR) to an already strong lineup of Kemp (.338, 17 HR), Ethier (.291, 14 HR), Ramirez (259, 20 HR) has already paid dividends. The slugger hit a three-run homer in his debut helping Dodgers top Miami 8-2 on Saturday night. Gonzalez knocked in a run Sunday but Dodgers were not as fortunate this time around as they dropped a 6-2 decision to Miami putting them 2 1/2 back of SF which could go to 3 as Giants hit the field in the Sunday Night'er. The mighty Dodger bats will need to be at their best in the opener at Colorado as Josh Beckett's (5-11, 5.23 ERA) makes his LA debut. The hurler is winless in August tagged for 7 Jacks, 18 runs over three starts. Then again, the change of scenery and league may be what Beckett needs to rebound. He is 5-1 life-time vs Rockies over seven career starts with both Boston/Florida (5-2 TSR). Beckett will be opposed by left-hander Jeff Francis (4-4, 5.79 ERA) which also plays into his and Dodgers favor. Francis hasn't been overly sharp his last six starts giving up 6 yard-ball, 22 runs including 3 runs over 4 innings in a ND and team loss to the Dodgers on August 8th which marked four straight team start losses vs the division rival. With L.A. on a sparkling 8-0 road streak vs a port-side starter the Dodger/Beckett combo look primed to get this series off in fine fashion.

Rays at Rangers: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (+111, 8.5)

Tampa Bay’s David Price continues his pursuit of the American League Cy Young Award when he pitches Monday’s opener of a three-game set against the host Texas Rangers. Price has won eight consecutive decisions, is tied for the major-league lead in victories, and leads the majors with a 2.28 ERA. Texas had a four-game winning streak snapped by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and leads the American League West by 5 1/2 games over the Oakland Athletics.

The Rays have been splendid against AL West teams this season with a 21-11 record, the best mark in the league. However, Tampa Bay lost the final two games of a series against Oakland before having a rare Sunday off day. The Rays won 14 of 17 games prior to the defeats against Oakland. Josh Hamilton homered and had four RBIs during Texas’ loss to Minnesota on Sunday. Hamilton leads the majors with 111 RBIs. His career high is 130 back in 2008.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH David Price (16-4, 2.28 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Derek Holland (8-6, 4.92)

Price had never beaten Texas until he defeated them on April 29, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He is 1-3 with a 5.52 ERA in seven career regular-season starts against the Rangers. Price has been sensational in August with a 0.60 ERA in four starts. He has allowed just 15 hits while holding opposing hitters to a .149 average this month.

Holland beat the Baltimore Orioles in his last start when he allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. It was his first victory since downing the Boston Red Sox on July 25. Holland lost to Tampa Bay on April 29 when he gave up five runs and nine hits in seven innings. He is 3-2 with a 6.49 ERA in six career starts against the Rays.

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-1 in Hollands last seven starts vs. Rays.
* Under is 5-1 in Prices last six starts vs. Rangers.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rays are 9-4 when Ben Zobrist starts at shortstop and Zobrist is batting .362 in those contests.

2. Rangers OF Nelson Cruz is 5-for-10 with a homer against Price.

3. Tampa Bay OF B.J. Upton (7-for-15, homer) and 3B Evan Longoria (6-for-16, homer, four doubles) have fared well against Holland.
