Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (9-8, 3.49)

Fister allowed two runs over seven innings to pick up the win over the White Sox on Tuesday. The only two hits Fister gave up were a pair of solo homers. The right-hander has only surrendered five earned runs over his last two starts, picking up the win in two of those contests. He faces the White Sox again on Monday.

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (5-7, 3.36)

Lee allowed one unearned run over seven strong innings in a 3-1 Phillies' win over the Marlins Wednesday. The left-hander has 18 strikeouts and two earned runs allowed in 20 1/3 September innings. He gets the ball against the Mets next.

SLUMPING

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (14-10, 3.32)

Bumgarner labored through 4 1/3 innings Tuesday, allowing five runs to the Rockies last time out. The lefty has yielded at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts and has watched his ERA balloon from 2.83 on August 25 to 3.32 following his latest poor effort. He draws the same Colorado squad in his next start.

Aaron Cook, Boston Red Sox (3-10, 5.18)

Cook yielded three earned runs in five innings of work in a loss to the Yankees Wednesday. The righty has been tabbed with losses in five of his last six starts and takes the bump against the Rays on Monday.

Oakland A's at Detroit Tigers

Those amazing Oakland Athletics currently holding one of the two wildcard spots in the AL and 3.0 games in back of Texas in the AL West Division race hit the road for a 10-game swing starting with three in Detroit. Surging A's ridding an 8-2 stretch having swept Mariners, taken 3-of-4 vs Halos and most recently taking 2-of-3 vs O's have got to like their chances opening the series with A.J. Griffin (6-0, 1.94 ERA) taking the ball. The hurler blanking Angels over 8 innings in his previous start is on a 3-0 streak with a miniscule 0.89 ERA to remain undefeated in eleven starts with A's 9-2 over the span. But, Detroit won't be easy pickens'. Tigers in a battle for AL Central bragging rights two games back of White Sox are on a solid 9-3 stretch at Comerica Park and scheduled to send Max Scherzer (16-6, 3.77 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander is arguably the hottest pitcher in the AL these days with a 10-1 record, 2.53 ERA over 14 starts (11-3 TSR). Stick with Detroit to draw first blood in this series as Tigers are on a smart 9-3 stretch at home w/Scherzer and already 1-0 this season vs A's with the hurler.
