Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (4-6, 3.56)

Estrada threw seven scoreless innings against the Pirates as the Brewers won 3-1 on Wednesday. The righty now has 13 2/3 scoreless innings over his last two starts with 10 strikeouts. He certainly has momentum for his next outing against the Nationals.

Trevor Cahill, Arizona Diamondbacks (12-11, 3.89)

Cahill only gave up two runs over six innings against the Padres on Wednesday to pick up his 12th win of the campaign. The right-hander has claimed victories in each of his last three starts, allowing two runs in each of those. He toes the rubber against the lowly Rockies next.

SLUMPING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-14, 5.72)

Romero had lost 13 straight decisions, matching a franchise record prior to a no-decision in his last start versus the Yankees. Although the lefty is showing signs of improvement, he hasn’t picked up a win since June 22 in Miami. He draws the red-hot Orioles in the second game of a doubleheader next.

Tyler Chatwood, Colorado Rockies (4-5, 5.73)

Chatwood gave up three runs on eight hits over four innings of a 7-1 loss to the Giants on Saturday. The 22-year-old hurler has only thrown more than five innings in one of his 10 starts this year. He pitches opposite Cahill and the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers

Detroit Tigers still within striking distance of White Sox in the A.L. Central hope to inch closer with a four game set coming up against Royals. Tigers won't be taking Kansas City lightly, Royals swept the last series in Kansas City which included a win with Verlander on the mound tagging the hurler for eight runs on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Still, got to like Detroit's chances, Verlander ridding a stretch of 13 scoreless innings looks primed to exact revenge as he enters 14-2 in 22 career starts vs Royals (16-6 TSR). Being opposed by Luke Hochevar helps the cause. The Royals right-hander spanked for 35 runs, 13 yard-ball the past eight starts posting a 1-5 record (2-6 TSR) has been hit hard by Detroit smacked for 5 Jacks, 27 runs the past five meetings including 9 runs in his only start vs Tigers this season. Tigers commanding a huge premium (-$2.65) the runline (-1.5, -$1.20) would be the best option.

Monday's Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

Marco Estrada (+125), Brewers at Nationals: He has won his last two starts and the Brewers have won six of his past seven. He’s coming off his best two-start combo of the season; he has allowed no runs in his last 13 2/3 innings. The clock is ticking on the Brewers’ season with 10 games to go and 2 1/2 games to make up for the final wild-card slot.

Jordan Zimmermann (-135), Nationals vs. Brewers: The Nats have won his past three starts with Zimmermann getting the decision in two of them. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of the last three games. In his only start against the Brewers this season (July 28), he defeated them, 4-1.

Lance Lynn (-240), Cardinals at Astros: The Cardinals have won his past three starts, but it’s his last two that really stand out: only one run allowed. Lynn had an amazing first half of the season, but he faltered and was on the verge of being sent to the bullpen for long relief. He has defeated the Astros in all three starts against them, including 5-0 in his last outing five days ago in St. Louis.

Trevor Cahill (-150), Diamondbacks at Rockies: Arizona has won four straight starts behind him, and his stat line looked almost identical in each of them. In his past three starts, he has allowed only two runs in each. This season the D-backs are 2-1 against the Rockies behind him.

Justin Verlander (-270), Tigers vs. Royals:
Based on his past two starts, it looks like Verlander is settling into a groove. He allowed no runs in those games. The Tigers will be going for their ninth straight win behind him at home. However, the Tigers have lost their past two games against the Royals when Verlander was on the mound, the last being Aug. 28 in Kansas City.

Cold

Ricky Romero (+190), Blue Jays at Orioles: It doesn’t get much colder than Romero. The Blue Jays have lost seven straight games behind him, including seven of their past eight on the road. However, he did have one of his better outings of the year during his last start at Yankee Stadium, allowing only one run in a 2-1 loss. Another positive for Romero is that he has defeated the Orioles in four straight games.
