Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (6-2, 3.61 ERA)

Since allowing 12 runs in 2 2/3 innings back on May 2, Burnett has allowed more than two runs just once in seven starts – all Pittsburgh victories. He took a no-no into the sixth inning in his last outing and ended up allowing two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking two. That win was the fourth consecutive start that he hasn’t served up a homer.

Ubadlo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (6-4, 4.91 ERA)

It’s been a tough go for Jimenez for much of this season, but he could finally be coming around. He has allowed just two runs over his last two starts, striking out 11 and walking just one. That’s a huge improvement considering he has 44 strikeouts compared to 43 walks this season. He said his last outing, a seven-inning performance in a 4-1 win over St. Louis, was his best in an Indians jersey.

Slumping

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (3-7, 5.74 ERA)

Santana just can’t keep the ball in the ballpark these days. He has allowed six homers in his last four games and has yielded seven earned runs in each of his last two trips to the bump. He was smacked around for 5 2/3 innings last weekend in Colorado but the Angels bailed him out with a 10-8 victory. With Jered Weaver set to rejoin the rotation next week, Santana needs a good outing to solidify his spot.

Philip Humber, Chicago White Sox

Two months after chucking a perfect game, Humber is in danger of being demoted to the bullpen. He has just one win in nine starts since hitting the record books, owning a fat 7.50 ERA. Humber has allowed 10 runs and five dingers over his last two outings, spanning 10 1/3 innings.

Saturday Night Tips
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

The Saturday night FOX baseball card gives bettors five games to wager on at 7:15 PM EST, with four of those contests of the interleague variety. The lone NL affair is a good matchup in Queens as Cincinnati and New York each look to stay on fire.

Reds at Mets

Both these clubs pulled off sweeps in their previous series as each squad attempts to keep up their hot ways at Citi Field. The Reds and Mets split a two-game series in May, as New York is 7-4 at home since rallying past Cincinnati, 9-4 on May 17. Jon Niese is coming off consecutive solid starts, while the Reds have lost each of Homer Bailey's last two trips to the mound.

Niese (4-2, 3.69 ERA) hasn't allowed an earned run in his past two outings, including a seven-inning effort at the Yankees. Unfortunately, the Bombers rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to win in walk-off fashion, 5-4, as the Mets lost as $1.70 road underdogs. The Mets have alternated wins and losses in each of Niese's last five starts, while striking out 10 in six innings of his previous home outing against the Cardinals in a 6-1 triumph as a short favorite.

Bailey (4-4, 4.35 ERA) has fared better on the road than at home as the Reds are 4-1 in his last five starts away from Great American Ballpark. In the righty's previous outing, Bailey gave up three earned runs in 6.1 innings, but he didn't figure in the decision as the Reds blew a 6-2 lead in a 7-6 defeat to the Tigers. The Reds are riding a 6-3 'under' run on the highway, while Cincinnati has been limited to three runs or less in 13 of 14 road losses this season (Bailey receives an average of five runs of support in away starts).

Marlins at Rays

Tampa Bay struck first in the Sunshine State rivalry by sweeping Miami at Marlins Park last weekend, as the Marlins try to get their offense in order against James Shields. The Fish plated just 17 runs in their disappointing 1-8 homestand, which included two losses by four runs or more to the Rays. With the venue shifting to Tropicana Field, the Marlins catch a Rays' squad that allowed 29 runs in a three-game sweep by the Mets earlier this week.

Tampa Bay's pitching was exposed in the New York series, as Shields (7-4, 4.06 ERA) looks to get the staff on track. The right-hander shut down the Marlins last Sunday, limiting Miami to four hits and one earned run in 6.1 innings of a 4-2 victory. The Rays are 9-4 in Shields' 13 starts, but the club owns just a 3-4 record in his night outings. Shields has compiled solid numbers against the Marlins in his career, as the Rays are 4-1 in his last five starts versus their cross-state rivals.

Anibal Sanchez (3-5, 3.40 ERA) started the season on fire with the Marlins winning four of his first five starts. Miami is 1-6 his last seven trips to the mound, as each start came in the favorite role, including a 4-2 loss to Shields and the Rays his last outing. The Fish owns a 1-1 record in his two starts as an underdog, beating the Phillies and losing to the Nationals. Thanks to Miami's ineffective offense, the Marlins have cashed the 'under' in four of Sanchez's five road starts.

Orioles at Braves

Baltimore is taking care of its interleague business after winning five consecutive home games against Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The O's continue their weekend set at Turner Field as Baltimore is 7-2 to the 'over' in nine games this season against their National League counterparts. Atlanta's roller-coaster season continues following four straight losses to the Blue Jays and Yankees, as the Braves are slipping down the NL East standings.

The Braves send out right-hander Brandon Beachy (5-4, 1.98 ERA) to the hill, who is winless in his last four decisions. Beachy has allowed five earned runs in 33 innings at Turner Field this season, while the Braves are 4-1 to the 'under' in his last four starts overall. Atlanta owns a 3-1 record in Beachy's four career interleague outings, but the lone loss came to Baltimore last July, 5-4 as a $1.55 home favorite.

Jason Hammel (6-2, 3.22 ERA) heads to the bump for the Orioles, as Baltimore is fresh off consecutive underdog wins over Philadelphia and Boston in his previous two starts. The O's bailed out Hammel in his last outing, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Phillies in extra innings. Hammel is Baltimore's most productive pitcher, as the team is 9-3 in his 12 starts, including a 5-2 mark away from Camden Yards.

Red Sox at Cubs

Two of baseball's oldest franchises each own below .500 records heading towards Father's Day on the North Side of Chicago. The Sox are 3-8 the last 11 games since a 5-1 run to end May, while the Cubs have put together a 4-10 mark since sweeping the Padres on Memorial Day weekend.

Jon Lester (3-4, 4.57 ERA) looks to get on track after the Red Sox lost each of his last starts to the Orioles and Nationals as heavy home 'chalk.' Getting away from Fenway Park is probably the best thing for the southpaw, who owns an ERA of nearly three less on the road (3.15) than at home (5.98). Boston is 3-1 in Lester's previous four road starts, including a 7-5 victory at Philadelphia as $1.20 favorite on May 19.

The Cubs send out Jeff Samardzjia (5-4, 3.96 ERA), who has cooled off since a promising start. The former Notre Dame football standout has won once in his previous five outings, including three losses away from Wrigley Field. At home, Samardzjia owns a 3-1 record and ERA of 1.96, while the Cubs are a perfect 3-0 in his three starts as a home underdog.

Astros at Rangers

The battle of the Lone Star State continues in Arlington this weekend after Texas grabbed two of three at Houston last month. The Rangers are 6-3 against their in-state rivals since 2011, while the Astros seek some consistency offensively after suffering their lowest moment of the season when they were the victim of a Matt Cain perfect game on Wednesday.

In Houston's five wins this month, the offense has provided at least five runs, including an eight and 11-spot in a series victory over the White Sox. However, they will need all the support possible for Lucas Harrell (6-4, 4.83 ERA), who is 2-4 in eight road starts this season. Harrell allowed five earned runs in 7.1 innings of an 11-9 victory at Chicago last weekend as a $1.60 underdog, Houston's fourth win in his last five outings.

The Rangers are just 6-9 the last 15 games, while giving up at least 10 runs in four contests. Justin Grimm makes his ML debut for Texas, starting in place of the injured Derek Holland. Grimm, the former University of Georgia standout, owned an 8-3 record at Double-A Frisco, while the righty put together a 1.87 ERA.

Chicago White Sox at LA Dodgers

L.A. Dodgers winning the opening battle between these first-place clubs should feel pretty good about chances of making it two in-a-row when they send Chad Billingsley (4-4, 3.57 ERA) to the mound against White Sox Phil Humber (2-4, 5.92 ERA). Billingsley who had not earned a victory in nine straight games since winning his first two starts of 2012 has turned things around. The hurler has posting back-2-back quality starts in wins over Seattle, Philadelphia allowing just 8 hits, 2 runs over 14.0 innings of work. On the flip side, Humber tagged for 5 jacks, 11 runs over 10.1 innings in consecutive defeats is now 1-4 over nine starts since chucking a perfect game in Seattle on April 21st. Stick with Dodgers as Billingsley moves to 6-1 at home following a quality start, White Sox fall to 0-6 with Humber following a loss the previous night and stumble to 1-10 with Humber vs a team with a winning record.
