Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (8-4, 2.92 ERA)

Bumgarner continues to lead the Giants’ rotation. He allowed just one earned run on three hits over eight innings last weekend but was still stuck with a no-decision in San Francisco’s loss to Seattle. The big lefty has 16 strikeouts in his last two starts and has walked only 19 batters in 95 2/3 innings this season.

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (9-2, 4.32 ERA)

The Yankees have won each of Nova’s last starts and he’s been absolutely dominant over his last three, allowing just two runs over the last 22 2/3 innings. After shutting out the Braves in Atlanta through seven innings, he followed that up by yielding just a solo homer in 7 2/3 innings at Washington. He owns a 0.84 WHIP in his last three starts.

Slumping

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (2-7, 5.29 ERA)

Kendrick has lost each of his last three trips to the hill and owns a 9.00 ERA during the skid. While he managed to go 6 1/3 innings last week against Toronto, he still gave up five earned runs in a 6-2 loss. He has struck out 40 batters compared to 23 walks in 63 innings of work this year.

Josh Outman, Colorado Rockies (0-3, 8.41 ERA)

Outman was the first guy to take the hill under the Rockies’ new four-man rotation, so he’ll go here on just three days’ rest. He has lost three in a row, stinking it up with a 10.22 ERA. He hasn’t pitched into the sixth inning in any of his four starts and will be hard pressed to do so now that the club has issued a 70-pitch limit for its starters.

MLB's Best and Worst Bets
By Jason Logan
Covers.com

The NBA Playoffs are over. Now what?

For sports bettors with basketball blinders on, this can be a scary time of the year. You want to keep wagering through the summer months but you haven't even made it to the seventh-inning stretch of a game yet. Don’t fret. Covers will get you up to speed on the best and worst bets from the diamond so far this season.

Best moneyline bet

Baltimore Orioles (39-30): 16.49 units

The Orioles continue to be the big breadwinners in the majors but have hit some speed bumps along the way, like their current three-game losing streak heading into Friday. Baseball bettors have been waiting for the other cleat to drop on Baltimore, which currently sits second in the American League East.

Worst moneyline bet

San Diego Padres (24-46): -17.57 units

Offense – or lack thereof – has plagued the Padres for a long time and 2012 is no exception. San Diego ranks last in the bigs in runs (3.3 per game) and rest in the basement of most hitting statistical categories. A rash of injuries to both the lineup and rotation is just throwing salt on the wound.

Best runline bet

Chicago White Sox (42-27 ATS): 20.30 units

The ChiSox are just three games above .500 (36-33) but have kept it close throughout the first half of the season. Chicago has capitalized on the 1.5-run spread – AKA the runline – scoring 4.68 runs and allowing 4.00 runs per game this season. Runline backers can thanks an impressive 19-13 road record for most of those units.

Worst runline bet

San Diego Padres (31-39 ATS): -22.98 units

Why the hell are people betting the Padres? Also burinng runline bettors are the Cleveland Indians (-17.51), Detroit Tigers (-13.57), and Colorado Rockies (-12.76).

Best over bet

Philadelphia Phillies (33-38): 44-26-1 over/under

The Phillies pitching staff is not playing up to oddsmakers standards, thanks in part to injuries to key starters like Roy Halladay. On offense, Philadelphia longs for the big bats of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.

Best under bet

Los Angeles Angels (38-32) - 25-44-1 over/under

The addition of Albert Pujols was supposed to supercharge the Halos' offense. While that hasn’t quite been the case – averaging just 4.1 runs per game – the pitching staff has done the heavy lifting. The Angels own a 3.43 team ERA, third lowest in the majors.

Top money pitcher

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (11-1, 2.00 ERA): 11.92 units

The knuckleballer is the frontrunner for the National League Cy Young and has been nearly untouchable in recent starts. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 41 2/3 innings, giving up just 16 hits in that span.

Worst money pitcher

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (4-7, 3.97 ERA): -11.87 units

Haren can’t take all the blame for those units lost. The Angels have given the right-hander just 4.38 runs of support during his starts. Haren actually has the 20th best ERA in the AL and is 15th in strikeouts.

Top over ump

Paul Emmel: 12-1 over/under

Teams are combining for 9.77 runs per game when Emmel is behind home plate.

Top under ump

Tim Welke: 3-10 over/under

Teams are combining for 7.2 runs per game when Welke is calling balls and strikes.

Saturday's MLB Notes
By Chris David
VegasInsider.com

The final weekend of Interleague play continues this Saturday, as the FOX network provide us with six regionally televised games that start at 7:15 p.m. ET. For this column, I’ll play the role of handicapper and break down the battles. Every gambler has their own unique style of handicapping but I believe pro baseball should be analyzed based on pitchers, current form and arguably the most important factor, the odds. Interleague play doesn’t give us great sample sizes for head-to-head matchups, but I believe we have some winners listed below.

With a little help from the VegasInsider.com experts, let’s break ‘em down!

Yankees at Mets

Pitchers: Iván Nova (9-2, 4.32 ERA) vs. Chris Young (1-1, 3.06 ERA)

The Yankees have gone 11-2 in Nova’s 13 starts this season, which includes five straight wins. Nova has allowed just two earned runs in his last three appearances. The Mets are 1-2 in Young’s three starts this season and the ‘over’ has gone 2-1 in those affairs.

Current Form: After winning 10 straight, the Yankees have now dropped three in a row, including last night’s 6-4 setback to the Mets. The victory for the Mets was their fourth straight, all coming at home.

Odds and Pick: The Yankees opened as -140 favorites and the line was bumped up to -150 quickly. Nova has been really sharp lately and he’s 2-1 versus the National League this season, the lone loss coming at home to the Reds (5-6). The total opened at 9 at a few major offshore shops and dropped to 8 ½ runs, which tells you the sharp money is on the ‘under.’ Even though Young doesn’t have great career numbers versus the Yankees, I expect both pitchers to get quality starts. Play the ‘under.’

Braves at Red Sox

Pitchers: Randall Delgado (4-7, 4.12 ERA) vs. Franklin Morales (0-1, 3.14 ERA)

Delgado hasn’t been awful for the Braves but the team is just 5-8 in his starts. He’s 1-2 in his last three starts but he’s only given up six earned runs over this span and the Braves mustered up just two runs of offense. Morales is the latest bullpen pitcher to get a chance in the Red Sox rotation and you he’s only had one start this season, which came last week in a win against the Cubs (7-4). He lasted just five innings but did have nine strikeouts. Morales is a lefthander and the Braves are 7-3 versus southpaws at night on the road this season.

Current Form: After losing six of seven, the Braves have won three in a row, including last night’s 4-1 win at Fenway Park. Prior to last night’s loss, the Red Sox had won seven of nine albeit against the Cubs (2) and Marlins (5).

Odds and Pick: I believe the look in this game is the total, in particular the ‘over.’ The Braves have seen the ‘under’ go 8-2 in their last 10 games, plus Delgado has been in good form and his ‘under’ numbers (8-1-1) over the last 10 are great. Yet, we’re looking at a total of 10.5 runs. Anytime you see that, it makes you lean the opposite way. I also like the fact that Atlanta has averaged 4.3 runs per game against lefties this season. Play the ‘over.’

Nationals at Orioles

Pitchers: Edwin Jackson (3-4, 3.02 ERA) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (7-2, 3.36 ERA)

The Nationals have gone 4-9 with the veteran Jackson on the mound this season, while Chen has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles (9-4).Against the American League this season, Jackson is 1-1 with a no decision but he’s only received two runs of support in two of the games. Chen has won his last three starts, surrendering just five earned runs over 20 1/3 innings. However, in his one appearance against Washington on May 20, he was tagged for six hits and six earned runs in a 9-3 loss.

Current Form: The Nationals have gone 2-5 in their last seven games while Baltimore just snapped a three-game skid last night by beating Washington, 2-1. The Orioles’ offense has been missing lately, scoring a total of 14 runs in the last seven games.

Odds and Pick: Tough game to gauge here with Washington (20-14) being a solid road team and Baltimore just as good at Camden Yards (20-14). Knowing Washington has had trouble against lefthanders on the road (3.4 RPG), makes me lean with the home squad. Plus, Baltimore is 6-1 at home in Interleague play this season. I expect Chen to learn from his first go ‘round against the Nats and get another low-scoring win. Play O’s and the ‘under.’

Dodgers at Angels

Pitchers: Chris Capuano (8-2, 2.71 ERA) vs. Ervin Santana (4-7, 5.16 ERA)

The Dodgers have gone 10-4 in Capuano’s starts this season, one of those losses coming to the Angels (2-3) on June 11. Santana is a very tough pitcher to figure out and the Angels are 5-9 in his starts this season. He’s coming off a one-hitter last Saturday against the Diamondbacks, but he gave up 19 total earned runs in his three previous appearances.

Current Form: The Dodgers have lost five of six, while the Angels have won five of six. Last night, the Angels earned an 8-5 victory over the Dodgers. And the Dodgers were leading the game 5-0 too.

Odds and Pick: The Angels have gone 12-12 versus lefthanders this season but that includes a dismal 0-4 mark at home in afternoon affairs. Capuano has some great day-time numbers (3-1, 1.29 ERA) this season and even though the Dodgers’ offense is struggling, the value is with the visitor. Play the Dodgers.

The last two games are free selections from our VI handicappers.

Brewers at White Sox - ASA

Pick – Over 9.5

The Brewers and White Sox failed to score a run in nine innings last night before the Brewers got on the board with a single run that was enough to win in the 10th inning. In ten innings these teams had one run and nine hits combined but Zack Greinke and Chris Sale are among the top handful of starting pitchers in the game right now. Things will be different on Saturday with much worse pitching on the mound and more favorable match-ups for two very good offensive teams.

Milwaukee has won five of the last seven games with 40 runs scored in those games and over the last two weeks Milwaukee owns a .335 wOBA, one of the better marks in the National League. Milwaukee has scored 5.5 runs per game over the last ten games against right-handed pitching and Dylan Axelrod gets the spot start Saturday after more than a month away from the big leagues. Axelrod has a very limited track record and his numbers in AAA were merely average. He is supported by a bullpen that owns a 5.20 ERA in the last ten games.

Milwaukee’s bullpen has also really struggled including a 4.78 ERA in the last ten games. Veteran Randy Wolf was a reliable starter the past two seasons for the Brewers but he has had horrible results this season with a 5.11 ERA. In road games Wolf owns a 6.75 ERA with a 1.84 WHIP as he has uncharacteristically had control issues this season. Opposing batters are hitting .294 against Wolf on the season and the White Sox are a great hitting team against left-handed pitching, scoring 4.7 runs per nine innings over the last ten games while batting .301. U.S. Cellular Field has averaged over 10 runs per game this season and last night’s game was not the norm for these teams.

Giants at Athletics – Kevin Rogers

Pick - Oakland

The A's threw away a 3-0 lead in last night's 5-4 loss to the Giants, as the two teams meet up again tonight in Oakland. Madison Bumgarner has struggled on the road this season, while coming off a no-decision in his last outing at Seattle, a 2-1 Giants' loss. The Giants are just 1-5 this season on the road off a win in a series opener, while going 4-10 overall on the highway off a victory. Oakland is still playing well in spite of last night's meltdown, as I'll take the A's as a short home 'dog.

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks

Expect the Snakes with Ian Kennedy (5-7, 4.13 ERA) to have little trouble here vs Chicago when Cubs trot Paul Maholm (4-5, 4.88 ERA) out to the mound. The Cubbie southpaw is 0-3 with a 5.59 ERA in his past seven starts (1-6 TSR) and his teams (CHI/PIT) are 2-18 last twenty on the road. Look for Maholm to drop to 0-3 life-time vs D'Baks with his teams falling to 1-5 over six attempts. Keep in mind, DBacks have been cruising at Chase Field of late posting a 10-2 mark platting 7.0 runs/game and enter a smart 11-3 as home favorite with Kennedy touching toe to rubber. Meanwhile, Cubbies are on a 4-16 road skid crossing just 3.2 per contest.
