Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (9-3, 2.19 ERA)

Miley has allowed just a single run in each of his last four starts and actually lost one of those – a 1-0 decision to the Rangers which saw him give up just three hits over 7 2/3 innings. The rookie has struck out 28 while walking just two batters over that 30 2/3 inning stretch. He currently sits ninth in MLB starter money standings, having earned 6.72 units for his supporters.

Tom Milone, Oakland Athletics (8-5, 3.83 ERA)

After serving up three homers and allowing eight earned runs in just four innings of work against the Colorado Rockies earlier this month, Milone bounced back with two great starts. He has allowed just one run over the last 16 innings, while striking out seven and walking one. He held the M’s scoreless in a 1-0 win in his last turn.

Slumping

Nathan Eovaldi, Los Angeles Dodgers (0-4, 4.04 ERA)

The Dodgers have lost each of Eovaldi’s last six starts and things seem to be getting worse, rather than better. He was hammered for eight earned runs on 10 hits in his last trip to the mound, which ended up as a 8-0 loss to San Francisco. The Dodgers average only 0.8 runs per game in his six starts to date.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (3-6, 6.14 ERA)

The Braves have dropped six of Minor’s last seven starts and he’s coming off yet another tough outing against the Boston Red Sox. The BoSox swatted three dingers off him in 4 2/3 innings and he was charged with four earned runs while also walking three.

Saturday Night Tips
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

The Saturday FOX baseball card showcases five contests, including three from the National League. It's an interesting mix of teams that are rolling (Rangers) and a majority that are struggling (Dodgers, Rays, and Rockies). The key game coming out of the National League involves New York and Los Angeles hooking up at Chavez Ravine as the Dodgers' offense attempts to bust out.

Mets at Dodgers

At one point this season, Los Angeles looked like the team to beat in the National League with a 30-13 mark halfway through May. However, Don Mattingly's club owns a 13-21 record the previous 34 games, while scoring just two runs in the last four contests. The task doesn't ease up for the Dodgers, who face Johan Santana in the third game of this weekend set.

Santana (5-4, 3.00 ERA) is winless in four of his last five road starts, including a 6-1 setback at Chicago on Monday. The Mets didn't perform well following a home Sunday loss to the rival Yankees, as Terry Collins' team committed three errors against the Cubs as nearly $1.30 road favorites. The 'over' has hit in all six of Santana's starts away from Citi Field, while the former Cy Young award winner won his last outing at Chavez Ravine on July 23, 2010.

The Dodgers send out winless Nathan Eovaldi (0-4, 4.04 ERA) to the hill, who has received a handful of runs in six starts. A handful is a literal term, as the weak Dodgers' offense has plated just five measly runs, including two runs in his last four outings. Amazingly, Los Angeles finally cashed an 'over' with Eovaldi starting at San Francisco in an 8-0 defeat on Monday, following a five-game streak of 'unders.'

Diamondbacks at Brewers

The rematch of last season's thrilling NLDS between Arizona and Milwaukee continues at Miller Park. The home team won all five games in that series, capped off by a walk-off victory from the Brewers in the deciding Game 5. Arizona picked up a modicum of revenge by taking two of three matchups at Chase Field in late May, including a victory over Brewers' ace Zack Greinke.

The D-Backs will face a young arm on Saturday night as Michael Fiers (2-2, 2.70 ERA) makes his fifth start for the Brewers. The right-hander put together a pair of terrific road starts his last two turns in the rotation, including 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball against the White Sox, but Milwaukee lost 1-0 in 10 innings. However, the Brewers dropped each of Fiers' first two starts as home favorites, including losses to the Pirates and Padres.

Arizona counters with impressive southpaw Wade Miley (9-3, 2.19 ERA), who has allowed one earned run in each of his last four outings. The D-Backs cashed the 'under' in all four of those starts, while Arizona plated only one run in Miley's last two road outings at Texas and San Diego. Miley picked up a victory in his previous trip to the mound against the Brewers, while overcoming a slow start in an 8-5 triumph. Six Diamondbacks racked up at least two hits in the win, as Arizona overcame a 5-2 deficit for the fourth home victory over Milwaukee in five tries.

Tigers at Rays

Detroit knocked off Tampa Bay in the series opener on Thursday, 5-2, as the Rays are sliding down the AL East standings in a hurry. Tampa Bay tries to get on track when Jeremy Hellickson returns from the disabled list after leaving his last start against the Mets with right shoulder fatigue.

Hellickson (4-3, 3.45 ERA) put together his worst start of the season in that loss to New York on June 14, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs in 3.2 innings of a 9-6 defeat as a $1.25 home favorite. Tampa Bay owns a 4-1 record when it lost in Hellickson's last outing, while going 5-1-1 to the 'under' at home in seven starts. Hellickson fell short in two starts against the Tigers in 2011, including a 2-0 defeat at Tropicana Field even though the righty struck out seven batters in seven innings.

The Tigers send out Rick Porcello (5-5, 4.71 ERA), as Detroit is 3-1 in his previous four road starts. Porcello received terrific run support in his last trip to the mound before throwing his pitch as the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning at Texas. The right-hander used that cushion to toss six innings of six-hit ball as Detroit cruised to an 8-2 win as $1.35 underdog. The Tigers don't seem to score a lot of runs on Saturdays, as the 'under' is 7-1 the last eight.

Athletics at Rangers

Texas still owns the best record in the American League as the Rangers look to win their third consecutive pennant. Even though the Angels are making a major run inside the division, the Rangers maintain a 5½-game as July is right around the corner. The Rangers have lost consecutive games only once since June 3, which interestingly came at Oakland, as the A's are 2-9 the last 11 visits to Arlington.

Left-hander Martin Perez is set to make his first Major League start on Saturday after giving up four runs (one earned) in just 0.2 innings of Wednesday's victory over the Tigers. Perez put together a 5-5 mark with an ERA of 4.59 at Triple-A Red Rock, as he faces an Oakland squad that is just 1-5 the previous six road games against left-handed starters.

The A's counter with southpaw Tom Milone (8-5, 2.83 ERA), who is off a pair of solid outings in victories over the Dodgers and Mariners. Milone has been shaky away from Oakland this season by posting a 3-4 record and ERA of 6.39 in spite of blanking the M's at Safeco Field in his last outing. The lefty scattered nine hits and four earned runs in seven innings of work in his previous matchup with the Rangers in Arlington, but the A's dropped a 4-1 decision as $2.00 underdogs in mid-May.

Padres at Rockies

It's hard to think that the regional audiences receiving this game on FOX are fired up to watch the two bottom teams of the NL West get it on at Coors Field. However, both San Diego and Colorado will be looking to pick up some sort of momentum prior to the All-Star break. These teams have split the first six meetings this season, as the second game of each series finished 'under' the total.

The Padres send out Edinson Volquez (4-7, 3.82 ERA), who is winless in his previous six starts against teams not named the Mariners. The former Reds' right-hander beat Seattle twice in interleague play, including a 2-0 victory last Sunday in which he allowed just four hits in 6.2 scoreless innings. San Diego owns a 2-4 record in Volquez's six road outings, while he attempts to put together consecutive quality starts for the first time since early May.

Christian Friedrich (4-5, 5.86 ERA) has taken several steps backwards since a solid start by losing each of his last four trips to the mound. The biggest issue for the southpaw is pitching at Coors Field, as Friedrich has yielded at least four earned runs in each of his four home starts, including four runs against Washington on Tuesday. Friedrich shut down the Padres at Petco Park in May as a short road 'dog in a 6-2 victory.
