Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (4-2, 2.38 ERA)

Vogelsong has allowed more than two runs just once over his last seven trips to the hill and has been charged with only nine earned runs over that span. The Giants have won each of his last six starts, including a 3-2 win over the Cubs Monday that saw him go seven innings, allowing two runs. After the game he said it was his best game “stuff-wise” all year.

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (7-2, 2.30 ERA)

Sale is riding an impressive four-game stretch that has seen him allow just four runs. He tossed his first complete-game of his career last weekend, holding the Mariners to two runs while striking out eight. In his outing before that, the 6-foot-6 lefty struck out 15 Rays over 7 1/3 innings to help the ChiSox to a 2-1 win. He was recently named the AL Pitcher of the Month for May.

Slumping

Scott Feldman, Texas Rangers (0-4, 7.01 ERA)

Feldman’s holding on to his rotation spot by a thread after being drilled for eight runs in less than two innings against the Athletics Monday. Feldman said he felt fine after the beating, but he’ll need to pull it together in a hurry. He hasn’t lasted five innings in any of his four starts and is working on a 12.66 ERA over his last three.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (5-4, 2.67 ERA)

This might be one of Verlander’s first appearances in the Slumping section, but that’s what happens when a pitcher of his caliber losses three straight starts. He allowed three earned runs and two homers in 6 1/3 innings of work in Sunday’s loss to the Yankees and yielded five runs in a loss to the Red Sox before that. While he’s had his problems, the Tigers have averaged only 1.7 runs of support for him during the skid.

Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds

Verlander (5-4, 2.67) roughed up the past three (0-3, 4.43 ERA) and ridding the longest losing streak since 2008 has many wondering what is wrong with the reigning Cy Young winner. Nothing, a few supporting runs can't fix. Tigers have given the hurler just 4 runs of support over his last 20.1 innings of work. Verlander has never faced Red in his career but his record vs National League opponents would suggest he'll handcuff Reds. Verlander is currently on a 7-1 stretch vs the National League with a 3.6 SWR, 0.047 WHIP, 8.53 ABRA/9, 2.53 ARA/9 and 21.75 Batter-Out-Rating/9). Look for Tigers to pick up the win on Saturday as A.L. road teams in Interleague with a pitcher like Verlander who can get guy's out (BOR/9 >15) win at a 77.8% clip (35-10) outscoring the N.L. club 4.2 to 1.8. Tigers on a 12-4 stretch in Verlander's June starts helps the cause.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Seattle Marines

When the Seattle and Los Angeles collide in the second of this three game set they'll each be sending a left-hander to the mound as Mariners Jason Vargas gets the start opposite Clayton Kershaw. Mariners have to like their chances, Vargas has pitched well for them this season, including wins in three of his last four starts. With the southpaw 2-1 at home with a miniscule 1.91 ERA and Kershaw on an 0-2 slide his last three on the hill expect Mariners to grind out a victory Saturday as Dodgers fall to 7-24 vs a left-handed starter in IL play including 3-13 when on the road.
