Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Hiroki Kuroda, New York Yankees (12-8, 2.96)

Kuroda continued his run of exceptional starts on Sunday, holding the Red Sox to a single run over eight innings to pick up his 12th win of the season. The right-hander has surrendered only eight runs over his last seven starts heading into action Saturday in Cleveland.

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (14-7, 2.83)

Bumgarner racked up 10 strikeouts over eight shutout innings of a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers last time out and has put together a string of eight consecutive quality starts. The 23-year-old looks to extend that streak to nine when the Giants host the Braves.

SLUMPING

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (8-10, 4.90)

Haren has taken back-to-back losses, surrendering 10 earned runs in his last seven innings pitched. Manager Mike Scioscia recently said he will consider using a four-man rotation if Haren can’t step up in his next outing in Detroit.

Josh Johnson, Miami Marlins (7-10, 3.73)

Johnson has taken the loss in three consecutive starts despite only allowing seven earned runs during that span. The Marlins have only provided the right-hander with three runs of support over his last three outings heading into a tough road battle in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

What Bettors Need to Know: Angels at Tigers
Covers.com

Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers (100, 10)

The Los Angeles Angels will need their starting pitchers to perform better down the stretch if they are to overcome their deficit in the American League wild card race. Zack Greinke began to hold up his end of the bargain - now it's Dan Haren's turn. The struggling right-hander will try to lead the Angels to their fifth straight victory when they visit the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in the second of a three-game series. Greinke turned his best performance in six starts with the Angels in their 2-1 victory Friday, but Los Angeles continues to face an uphill battle to earn an AL wild spot. The Angels are 2 1/2 games behind Oakland and Baltimore, who are tied in the final position.

The Tigers are 1 1/2 games behind the Athletics and Orioles, and 2 1/2 back of the Chicago White Sox in the less-crowded AL Central race. They have seven games left with the White Sox. For Saturday's game, Detroit will recall rookie left-hander Drew Smyly, who will take Doug Fister's spot in the rotation. Fister has tightness in his right groin. Smyly made 15 starts for the Tigers earlier this season before going on the disabled list with a right intercostal strain. He will face Haren, who hasn't pitched past the fourth inning in his last two starts.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Dan Haren (8-10, 4.90 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Drew Smyly (4-3 4.42)

Haren is winless in three starts and lost his last two - 7-0 against Tampa Bay on Aug. 16 and 7-4 versus Seattle on Aug. 11. He allowed 12 runs (10 earned) and 12 hits in seven combined innings over the two outings. Haren is 4-4 with a 3.68 ERA in nine starts against the Tigers. Detroit's roster is hitting .248 against him, with Miguel Cabrera 3-for-13 (homer, two RBIs).

Smyly was pulled after one inning of his start with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday when the Tigers realized they would need him Saturday. He won his last two starts with Detroit - July 6 at Kansas City and July 1 against Tampa Bay. He struck out 10 against the Royals. Smyly is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in six home starts. He has never faced the Angels or any of their players.
