Saturday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (16-8, 2.72)

Verlander recorded his third straight victory after striking out eight in as many innings in a 6-2 triumph over Kansas City on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP improved to 11-7 in his career versus the Twins after pitching a complete-game gem on July 4. Verlander permitted one run on four hits and struck out seven in the 5-1 victory.

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (12-8, 2.90)

Zimmermann gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings against Milwaukee last Monday to win back-to-back games for the first time since his two starts following the All-Star break. Zimmermann, who has allowed less than three runs in four straight outings, is 7-5 with a 2.23 ERA in 15 starts on the road this season.

SLUMPING

Justin Germano, Chicago Cubs (2-9, 6.18)

Germano has taken the loss in each of his last seven starts and is running out of time to secure himself a spot in Chicago’s future. The 30-year-old right-hander has not completed six innings in any of those seven starts and is coming off an effort against St. Louis last Sunday in which he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 frames. Germano, who has bounced around the majors and minors over the last several seasons, has faced Arizona five times in his career, going 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (10-8, 4.40)

Halladay had won six of his previous seven decisions before a disastrous outing against the Braves last Saturday. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits with three walks. Halladay is 2-1 in three starts against Miami with a 3.98 ERA.

Hot

Jordan Zimmermann (+115), Nationals at Cardinals: The Nats have won his past four starts with Zimmermann getting the win in three of them. He's allowed only one run in each of his past two starts and six runs combined over his last four. Washington is in a battle with Cincinnati for home field throughout the playoffs.

Madison Bumgarner (-120), Giants at Padres:
He was in a rough spot for a while, but the Giants have won his past three starts -- the last two of which Bumgarner got the win and looked like the pitcher from the early summer. The Giants have also won their past five games against the Padres with Bumgarner on the mound.

Andy Pettitte (-175), Yankees at Blue Jays: Since coming off the DL, he's been sensational and has given the Yankees the lift they needed in their attempt to stay ahead of the Orioles. He hasn't allowed a run in either of his starts. His first start back was against the Blue Jays on Sept. 19.

Justin Verlander (-250), Tigers at Twins: He's won three straight starts in dominant Verlander fashion coming into today's game. He's won his last four games against the Twins, the last coming on July 4, a complete game 5-1 win. For the run-line players, all four of those wins against the Twins have been by two runs. His last three starts overall have also been won by four runs each.

Steve Johnson (-180), Orioles vs. Red Sox: He's been outstanding in his three starts this season, getting the win in them all. His last start came against the Blue Jays when he went five innings without allowing a run and striking out six. The Red Sox have crumbled almost as bad as last September, losing six of their last seven, including a lackluster 9-1 loss Friday.

Cold

Justin Germano (+190), Cubs at Diamondbacks: This has become a broken record. Every five days Germano finds himself on the cold list, and he seems to get colder. He's lost his past seven games and the Cubs have lost nine of his last 10 starts
