Weekend Outlook
By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

The Cubs are chasing the Reds for first-place, the Nationals look to continue dominance in New York and the Yankees have won nine of their last 10 heading to Pittsburgh to face the reeling Pirates. Those are just a few of the main storylines heading into the third weekend of MLB action. Here's a look at some of the series I'll be paying close attention to:

Washington (10-5) at N.Y. Mets (8-8 )

Scheduled rotation: Roark vs. de Grom, Gonzalez vs. Harvey, Scherzer vs. Wheeler

Series Price: Mets -130, Nationals +110

The big problem with the Nationals is lack of a closer. Blake Treinen has only blown one save in four opportunities, but his 7.11 ERA is alarming. But this is what the Nationals do and they probably won't go looking for a closer until July. But that's really the only negative right now. There's so much more to be excited about with the Nats right now. Bryce Harper is looking the the 2015 MVP version again batting .400 with six home runs. And it's not just him hitting well right now. The entire team is and their .294 batting average leads baseball. The Mets are second-best in baseball with 24 home runs, but their .219 average is ranked 25th. Still, the Mets have gone 10-5-1 to the Over. Washington has gone 39-14 in its last 53 at New York.

Chicago Cubs (8-7) at Cincinnati (9-7)

Scheduled rotation: Lester vs. Adleman, Arrieta vs. Reed, Lackey vs. Arroyo

Series Price: Cubs -260, Reds +220

The Reds lost 15 of 19 games to the Cubs last season, but they're no pushovers anymore as they lead the World Champs by a half game atop the NL Central. This weekend's series will tell us a lot about who the Reds really, but I'm liking what I've seen so far. The Reds are +18 in run differential, which is second-best in NL behind the Dodgers. Zack Cozart's .405 batting average is third highest in NL. But the real star of the team that no one is talking about is the defense. It's steady every night. They don't beat themselves and their four errors are the second fewest in baseball (Kansas City has just one error).

The Cubs will miss rookie sensation Amir Garrett in the rotation and come loaded with Jon Lester on Friday and Jake Arrieta on Saturday, which is why they are the biggest favorite of the weekend to win the series. If the Reds were able to take two out of three in the series, it would be a major accomplishment.

San Francisco (6-10) at Colorado (10-6)

Scheduled rotation: Cueto vs. Chatwood, Moore vs. Senzatela, Samardzija vs. Freeland

Series Price: Giants -110, Rockies -110

We've got first-place against last-place in the NL West here, but this time around its the surprising Rockies on top. The Rockies have the edge in this series just because they don't have to face Madison Bumgarner, even though the Giants have lost all four of his starts. The star of the Rockies so far has been Greg Holland who leads MLB in saves. Holland is giving Colorado something they've never really had to close games out. He's saved all eight of his opportunities. On Friday the Giants face Tyler Chatwood who is coming off the best outing of his career, and it came at San Francisco. He tossed a complete-game shutout allowing just two hits. The Rockies have a big test in the next six days with a visit from first-place Washington on Monday. The will go home to face the Dodgers.

L.A. Dodgers (8-8 ) at Arizona (10-7)

Scheduled rotation: Wood vs. Walker, Maeda vs. Ray, McCarthy vs. Miller

Series Price: Dodgers -135, Diamondbacks +115

Arizona gets lucky in this series because they won't face Clayton Kershaw who won his third straight start on Wednesday. He was masterful last week against Arizona at Dodger Stadium. When they met last week the Dodgers took the first twoi games, but Arizona bounced back with wins in the final two of the four game series. Arizona comes off a 10-game west coast road trip where they went 4-6, but they now return home where they are 6-1 averaging 6.9 runs a game while hitting .313. They've gone 5-1-1 to the Over in those home games, which is something to look for in this series with the bottom of the rotation. One of the of most pleasant suprises for Arizona has been closer Fernando Rodney who is 5-for-5 in save opportunities. Also, the Arizona pitching staff has surrendered only 11 home runs, which is the lowest total in the NL. Expect lots of runs in this series.

Boston (10-6) at Baltimore (10-4)

Scheduled rotation: Pomeranz vs. Bundy, Wright vs. Asher, Rodriguez vs. Gausman

Series Price: Orioles -115 Red Sox -105

Baltimore got off to a 14-9 April last season and made the playoffs for the third time in the past five seasons and here they are in first-place of the competitive AL East again. They're season win total at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook was 79.5. Buck Showalter just gets the job done no matter what they're rotation looks like and they've been doing it all this year without Chris Tillman who they went 22-8 behind last season. Boston went 11-8 against Baltimore last season, outscoring them 102-82. They split in Boston April 11-12 and the Under has gone 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings.

Detroit (8-7) at Minnesota (7-8 )

Scheduled rotation: Verlander vs. Santiago, Boyd vs. Mejia, Fulmer vs. Gibson

Series Price: Tigers -130, Twins +110

Detroit gets lucky in this series because they don't have to face Ervin Santana and both teams are sliding coming into this series. The Tigers lead the AL Central with Cleveland But the good news for each is that tight AL Central where last-place is only one game back. Detroit comes off being swept at Tampa Bay and manger Brad Ausmus says there going to be changes if the level of play doesn't improve. After a hot start, Minnesota's bullpen is proving to be as bad as many expected and the team has lost four straight coming in. Detroit has gone 20-7 in the last 27 meetings. The Twins have have gone 10-3-2 to the Under this season.

N.Y. Yankees (10-5) at Pittsburgh (6-9)

Scheduled rotation: Sabathia vs. Glasnow, Pineda vs. Taillon, Montgomery vs. Nova

Series Price: Yankees -110, Pirates -110

The Yankees have an MLB-leading +28 run differential, most of it coming at home where they just completed an 8-1 homestand. They went 2-4 on the road to start the season, but they look as though they're starting to jell with the young crop of future stars exceeding expectations. And then there's veterans like Chase Headley second in the AL batting .396 and Starlin Castro third at .368. Aaron Judge has five homers and the starting rotation has looked capable of holding opponents down. The Yankees have won nine of the past 12 meetings and the Pirates come in slumping having been swept at St. Louis by three identical 2-1 scores, the last two coming after Starling Marte got suspended 80 games for taking PED's.

The Cubs visit Pittsburgh on Monday, so the Bucs could find themselves deep in last place heading into May if they don't pick up the pace. Jameson Taillon comes in with the second lowest ERA in the NL at 0.90. The Bucs have stayed Under the total in their last four and six of the last seven. This is a huge series for both squads. Pittsburgh needs some traction and New York's confidence could blow up by winning the series, and of course, we'll all hear about it non-stop because they're the Yankees.
