Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals – 2-0, 1.52 ERA

Gonzalez hasn’t allowed a single run over his last 20 innings on the bump and has struck out at least six batters in each of his four starts. The lefty hasn’t thrown more than 97 pitches yet this year and has walked just seven batters. Three of his four outings have played under.

Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals – 2-0, 2.49 ERA

Garcia should have a lot in the tank Sunday after throwing just 85 pitches in a tough-luck no-decision in his last start. He gave up just one run over 7 2/3 innings against the Cubs before getting the hook in the eighth. So far, the Cardinals are giving him 6.8 runs of support per game.

Slumping

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels – 0-4, 7.23 ERA

Santana won’t have much of a chance picking up his first win of the year if he can’t keep the ball in the ballpark. He gave up four dingers in his last start – a 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay – and has now allowed an MLB-high 10 homers already. The Angels aren’t giving him much help either, averaging only 0.8 runs in his starts.

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies – 0-1, 9.39 ERA

At least it probably can’t get much worse for Kendrick. He probably only has to make one more start before Cliff Lee gets back from the DL, but will need to be much better after getting torched for seven runs on 11 hits in only three-plus innings of work against Arizona.

Sunday Night Baseball: Rays at Rangers
By Covers.com

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (-122, 9)

While it is far too early to describe Tampa Bay’s series at Texas as an AL Championship Series preview, few would be surprised if the two squads squared off for the pennant come October.

The Rays have shaken off a sluggish start, winning eight of their past 10 games. Tampa Bay took Friday’s series opener 8-4 before Texas snapped the Rays’ six-game winning streak 7-2 on Saturday. The Rangers own baseball’s best record at 16-5, three games better than the Rays’ 13-8 mark entering Sunday’s nationally televised matchup.

The Rangers boast baseball’s best offense, averaging 5.3 runs per game, leading the majors in batting average (.297) and ranking second in home runs (33).

Outfielder Josh Hamilton paces the Texas attack, ranking in the top five in the majors in average (.388) homers (nine) and RBIs (24).

Before Saturday, the Rays had allowed only 2.4 runs per game in their past 10 contests. Tampa Bay has given up 11 runs in the first two games of the series.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tampa Bay LH David Price (3-1, ERA 2.63) vs. Texas LH Derek Holland (2-1, ERA 4.78)

Price pitched well in his last outing Tuesday, firing a complete-game five-hit shutout against the Angels. Price walked one and struck out six, both season-best marks. Historically the left-hander has struggled against Texas, going 0-3 with a 5.67 ERA in six career starts.

Holland looks to rebound from his worst start of the season Monday against the Yankees, when the left-hander allowed nine hits, seven earned runs and walked four in six innings. He had walked only three hitters in 14 1/3 innings in his previous two starts in victories over Seattle and Boston. Holland is 3-1 in five career starts against the Rays, but with a bloated 6.51 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Left-handers are hitting .318 against Holland this season; right-handers .184.

2. Tampa Bay pinch-hitters have reached base in their last five plate appearances. The last two (Brandon Allen on Thursday and Luke Scott on Friday) homered.

3. Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz is hitting .438 against Price with two homers in 16 career at-bats.

TRENDS

Texas is 42-17 in its last 59 home games while the Rays are 27-11 in Price's last 38 starts with four days' rest.

The under is 6-1 in the Rays' last seven games overall and 10-3-1 in the Rangers last 14 home games.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Seattle at Toronto

Seattle took the first game in this series then got smacked 7-0 on Saturday forcing a rubber match on Sunday a situation that is not favorable. The Mariners are 3-7 after being blanked, on a 4-11 skid in road rubber matches, 6-12 on the road with Jason Vargas after a loss the previous day, 7-20 on the road after losing by 5 runs or more.

Los Angeles at Cleveland Indians

Two hurlers headed in opposite direction take to respective mounds. Indians Derek Lowe has done just fine with his new club posting a 3-1 mark in four starts including a 2-0 record with a sparkling 0.69 ERA at Progressive Field. Meanwhile, Ervin Santana is winless (0-4) on the campaign with a whopping 7.23 ERA thanks in large part to having surrendered a league-high ten long-ball. Stay home with Tribe knowing Halos are on an 0-8 slide with Santana touching toe to rubber, 1-4 skid last five trips into Cleveland w/Santana.
