Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Derek Lowe, Cleveland Indians (6-1, 2.05 ERA)

The big veteran came into this season with something to prove and is doing just that. He fired a complete game shutout in his last start, scattering six hits while walking four. It was his first shutout since he notched one with the Cubs in 2005 and has allowed two or fewer runs in five consecutive starts, four of which he won.

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-1, 2.52 ERA)

The 25-year-old lefty pounded the strike zone with 72 strikes out of 102 pitches in his last outing to help the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win over the Dodgers. He lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed just a solo home run while striking out five. Miley is 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA since joining the rotation last month.

Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 4.50 ERA)

Correia was doomed by one bad inning in his last trip to the hill. He allowed five runs in the fourth inning in a 6-2 loss to Miami Tuesday night. After the game he told reporters that the Marlins made him pay when his command wasn’t the sharpest, but he has now lost four straight and has issued 12 of his 15 walks this season during the drought.

Colby Lewis, Texas Rangers (3-3, 3.63 ERA)

Lewis lost his third straight start Tuesday, a 7-4 setback against the Royals. He had two throwing errors in the first inning and ended up yielding four runs before getting out of the frame. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs (five unearned). In his outing before that, he struck out 12, but also served up five homers.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Dodgers
By Covers.com

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (-105, 7)

The Cardinals and host Dodgers conclude a three-game series with their two starting pitchers looking to reverse recent fortunes. The Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse has allowed three or more runs in three of his last four starts, while Chad Billingsley has gone six straight starts since his last win. The two National League division leaders will meet again in St. Louis in late July before playing a four-game set at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 13-16.

Both teams are missing several key players for the series finale, including the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp, who hopes to return when he’s first eligible on May 29. The MVP candidate landed on the disabled list last Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. The Cardinals are without Jon Jay (shoulder), Allen Craig (hamstring) and reliever Kyle McClellan (elbow), but right fielder Carlos Beltran appears to have avoided the disabled list after missing parts of four games last week with a sore right knee.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Kyle Lohse (5-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Chad Billingsley (2-3, 3.83 ERA)

Lohse began the season with an impressive April for the second straight season, but he’s struggled in his last four outings. After being pulled from his previous start because of a strained left hamstring, Lohse gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings last Tuesday. He was 1-1 with an 8.71 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers last season.

Billingsley allowed four runs over four innings last Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, lasting just four innings for the second straight start. After walking one batter in his first three starts combined, he’s walked 15 in his last five outings. Billingsley is 1-4 with a 4.65 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles.
* Over is 4-1 in Billingsley's last 5 starts vs. Cardinals.
* Over is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings.

* Under is 18-7-1 in Marquez's last 26 games behind home plate vs. Los Angeles.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Utilityman Jerry Hairston (hamstring) is expected to rejoin the Dodgers in the middle of next week after a brief rehab assignment.

2. Cardinals prospect Matt Adams went 4-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs for Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The first baseman is batting .338 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs.

3. Los Angeles is 12 games into a stretch where it plays 18 of 23 games at Dodger Stadium through the end of May.

Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers

Forget that Brewers have lost six of seven on the diamond and have a losing record at home (9-11) after dropping the second of this three game set with Minnesota on Saturday. Crew will have a ton of optimism when they play the inter-league finale against Twinkies at Miller Park. Their top arm, Zack Greinke (4-1, 2.88 ERA, 6-2 TSR) heads to the hill with a 20-1 team start record at Miller Park of which he has won fourteen of them. With Jason Marquis (2-3, 6.68 ERA) in poor form having posted an 0-3 mark last three on the mound allowing 13 runs, 11 walks while striking out just 5 over 15.0 innings look for Brew Crew to move to 7-1 in May with Greinke touching toe to rubber. The kicker, Brew Crew are on a 6-1 streak off back-2-back losses with Greinke including 3-0 this season, Twinkies are on an 0-6 skid in game three of a series. A lot of lumber (-$2.14), might want to consider using Brew Crew in an exotic wager you have in mind or on the run line (-1.5, $1.00).
