Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Jon Niese, New York Mets (7-3, 3.35 ERA)

Niese has won three consecutive starts, allowing only four runs in 21 1/3 innings. The big lefty has pitched at least seven innings in four of his last five starts and walked more than one batter just once in his last six.

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (9-3, 2.62 ERA)

Capuano may not be heading to the All-Star Game, but he’s certainly pitching like he belongs. He has limited three of his last four opponents to just one run and has struck out 27 batters over that span. Capuano sits seventh in MLB starter money standings, having earned 7.65 units for his supporters.

Slumping

Roy Oswalt, Texas Rangers (2-1, 7.79 ERA)

Oswalt started OK with the Rangers, but has slipped since. He is coming off one of the worst outings of his entire career. The veteran allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in 4 2/3 innings during a loss to the White Sox. Before that he gave up five runs over six innings against Detroit. He has now yielded a whopping 26 hits over those two starts.

Chris Volstad, Chicago Cubs (0-7, 7.94 ERA)

It doesn’t look like almost two months in the minors did Volstad much good. In his first start since mid-May, he was smacked for six runs in just 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Atlanta. Volstad’s last win came way back on July 10, 2011.

Toronto at Chicago

Central-leading Chicago White Sox winners of five straight and eleven of fourteen look to end the first half with a sweep over floundering Toronto Blue Jays. White Sox platting 5.5 runs/game over it's current 11-3 stretch pin their hopes on Dylan Axelford (0-1, 4.91 ERA). The rookie right-hander tagged with his third straight no-decision Wednesday has given up 11 runs over the span (3-0 TSR). Axelford's first major-league victory came in the final game last year when he threw six shutout innings in defeating visiting Toronto 4-3. Pale Hose on a 5-1 streak after winning the first two of a three game set have been pegged -$1.25 to -$1.35 betting favorites. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays hope to snap their three game skid with Brett Cecil toeing the rubber. The lefty picking up his second win last time out has surrendered three or less runs in three of his four starts since being recalled from the minors (3-1 TSR). Jays 5-10 away from Toronto in June crossing 4.9 runs/game and just 3-9 on the road this season in game-three's have a tough one. On a positive note, Toronto has had success handing the ball to Cecil in this situation. Jays are on a 9-2 road stretch off back-2-back losses handing the ball to their port-side hurler.

Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees vs. Red Sox
By: Steve Merril
Covers.com

The final game before the All-Star break on Sunday Night as the Yankees host the Red Sox.

THE WALKING WOUNDED

The Yankees and Red Sox are arguably two of the most banged up teams in the league right now. New York's pitching staff is without three starters and two relievers including Mariano Rivera and CC Sabathia. The lineup is without Brett Gardner who has been known to provide a big hit. Meanwhile, Boston entered this series without Dustin Pedroia and John Lackey among others.

Dice-K Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, and Clay Buchholz have all spent time on the disabled list this season.

SUPER NOVA

Ivan Nova has begun to find his form after a rough start to the season. The Yankees' starter has allowed three earned runs or less in six straight starts with the team winning four of those outings. Nova's been able to keep the walks down and the strikeouts up. He gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings his last start in Boston which came all the way back on April 20th.

Nova had made three previous starts against Boston allowing four runs in each of those games, but they came in 2010 and 2011.

SOUTHPAW SUCCESS

Jon Lester has had mixed results as of late. The southpaw has given up six hits or more in nine of his last 10 starts. The good thing for him is Boston has scored four runs or more in seven of those starts, so they've been able to get around his struggles.

Lester has also been good at reducing the damage for the most part, allowing three earned runs or less in six of those 10 starts. He will look for better success against a New York squad that shelled him last season on September 24th in New York. Lester gave up eight runs and eight hits in just over two innings of work.

CURRENT TRENDS

Under is 7-1 in NYY last 8 Sunday games
Yankees are 4-0 in Game 4 of a series
Red Sox are 26-12 in their last 38 Sunday games
Red Sox are 2-6 in Game 4 of a series

HITTERS TO WATCH

Derek Jeter is 17-for-49 vs. Lester
Alex Rodriguez is 6-for-34 vs. Lester
David Ortiz is 3-for-11 vs. Nova
Adrian Gonzalez is 0-for-8 vs. Nova
