Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers,com

STREAKING

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers (16-9, 3.90)

Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday with a stiff neck but has been sharp in September, going 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four starts. He struck out nine and held the Angels to one run on four hits over eight innings to earn a win in his last start on Sept. 20. The Japanese right-hander has not lost since Aug. 17 and has turned in a quality start in each of his last seven trips. Darvish is 3-1 with a 4.26 ERA in five starts against Los Angeles in 2012.

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (9-1, 1.64)

Medlen will be looking to set a major league record on Sunday. The Braves have won the last 22 games the right-hander has started, tying Whitey Ford and the Yankees and Carl Hubbell and the Giants for the record. Medlen, who would start the one-game wild card playoff on regular rest Friday, has not lost since joining the rotation at the end of July. He did allow more than two runs for the first time on Tuesday, when he was reached for three runs in seven innings against Miami. Medlen has beaten the Mets twice in his last nine starts, yielding a total of three runs in 12 1/3 innings.

SLUMPING

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (9-14, 4.91)

Alvarez has lost two straight starts and seven of his last nine decisions. He had strung together three straight quality starts before giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a loss at Baltimore last time out. Alvarez is 0-1 with a 5.64 ERA in four career starts against New York, including three this season.

Mike Fiers, Milwaukee Brewers (9-9, 3.55)

Fiers' strong rookie season went south in September, as he is 1-3 with a 6.97 ERA in five starts this month. He hasn't made it past the fifth inning in any of those outings and gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Cincinnati his last time out.

Sunday's Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

David Price (-150), Rays at White Sox: The White Sox have their season on the line, two games out with four to go, while Price has the Cy Young award at stake with still a small window open for the wild card. Chicago has lost nine of its past 11, while the Rays have won four straight behind Price. In his last start, Price was dominant, going nine innings with 13 Ks in a 5-2 win at Boston.

Yu Darvish (-125), Rangers vs. Angels: The Rangers have won his past five starts with Darvish getting the win in four of them. He has allowed only one earned run in each of his last three starts while striking out eight or more batters. He is in the best form of his short major league career and is looking every bit as good as he did in Japan.

Tom Milone (-175), A’s vs. Mariners: The A’s have won their past four games behind Milone. He got a no-decision in his last start, but fought hard at a tough place (Texas) allowing no earned runs in a 3-2 win. The A’s have won his past three starts against the Mariners, where he has allowed only three earned runs, the last coming Sept. 9 in a 4-2 win where he tied a season high with 10 Ks.

Kris Medlen (-300), Braves vs. Mets: He is the hottest pitcher in baseball and will be making his final start of the regular season before getting the nod in the wild-card game next week. The Braves have won 11 games in a row behind him; he has allowed only nine earned runs over that span with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 80-9. Two of his wins over that streak came against the Mets by a combined score of 20-6, good for run-line bettors. However, in two of his past three starts, the Braves have won by only one run.

Cole Hamels (-145), Phillies at Marlins: The Phils have won his past four starts with Hamels getting the win in two of the games. They’ve won eight of his past nine. He’s 16-6 on the season, but three of those losses came against the Marlins. However, he did win his last start against them five days ago.

Lance Lynn (-135), Cardinals vs. Nationals: He has won his last three starts and the Cards have won the last five behind Lynn. Over his three-game winning streak, he has allowed only two runs combined. The Cardinals need him to come up big today to keep some distance from the Dodgers in the wild-card chase. With only four games to go, the Cards have a two-game lead.

Josh Collmenter (-210), Diamondbacks vs. Cubs:
He has won his past four starts, two of which he allowed only one earned run. Despite being stingy in the four games, all four have gone OVER the posted total because of the D-backs’ bats staking him to big early leads.

Cold

Zach McCallister (-120), Indians vs. Royals: Although not pitching poorly, the Indians have still lost his past two starts and seven of his last eight. He faced the Royals on Aug. 2 and lost 5-2.

Zach Stewart (+200), Red Sox at Orioles: He has received two starts this season and got rocked in each one for the loss, giving up 15 combined runs. He’ll be facing an Orioles team that just tied the Yankees for the AL East lead. The Sox have lost eight of their past nine games.
