Sunday Scouting Edge
By Coach Fletcher

Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets

Matt Harvey has a 0.40 era in his last 7. In a big game like this you might be thinking about taking the under. Well, wait just a minute. In his last 3 starts Jeff Locke has an era of 6.32. He’s given up 4 runs to both the Cards and Cubs and 3 runs to the Reds in his last 13 2/3 innings. You think that’s bad? Locke’s road era is worse. Locke is 3-4 on the road with a 1.723 whip. Overall Locke is 6-7 with a 4.43 era. Harvey has made one start this year against the Pirates in Pittsburgh and did not fare well. On May 23, Harvey was torched for 7 runs on 6 hits, including 2 bombs in just 4 innings. Harvey and the Mets opened at about -160 with the total at 7.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Atlanta Braves

The Arizona Diamondbacks invade Atlanta as -115 opening favorite here with the total set at 7. Ruby De La Rosa takes the bump for the D-Backs. Ruby is 10-5 with a 4.55 era. He faces my nomination for tough luck pitcher of the year, Shelby Miller of the Braves. Miller is 5-9 on the year with a 2.48 era. Poor Miller. The Braves just don’t score any runs for him which may be one reason the linemakers set the total at 7. De La Rosa is 3-4 on the road with a hefty 5.02 era. In his last 3 starts he’s gone 2-0 with a 4.76 era. Poor Miller again. He is 2-5 at home with a 2.09 era. That’s just ridiculous. And that home era might be another reason for the total. But as anyone can and would do under the circumstances, Miller is starting to crumble before our very eyes. He’s 0-2 in his last 3 starts with a 4.00 era. De La Rosa has one start against Atlanta this year. On June 3 he went 5 innings and gave up 7 runs on 9 hits including two bombs. The D-backs actually won that game 9-8. Miller also has but one start against Arizona this year. On June 2 he gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in just 4 ½ innings.

Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox

Saturday in what appeared to be a football game, the Red Sox beat Felix Hernandez and the Mariners 22-7. Felix was only able to get 7 outs while getting torched for 10 runs and 12 hits, including 3 home runs. The rest of the staff obliged to allow the other 12 runs. Hopefully Vidal Nuno will have better luck Sunday. Nuno is 0-1 with a 5.19 era. He’s facing Henry Owens who is 1-1 with a 3.60 era. I’m guessing we could see a mini-replay tomorrow because Nuno has not had much success on the road. He’s 0-0 with a 7.36 road era. Of course that start was at Colorado and anything can happen there. In his other 2 starts Nuno went 5 innings against Baltimore and Minnesota allowing each team 2 runs on 2 hits. Last year Nuno made one start against Boston at home and shut them out on 2 hits in 5 2/3 innings. As for the Red Sox, they have scored 37 runs in their last 2 games. They’ve actually been on an offensive tear scoring 22, 15, 6, 4, 7, 6, 7 runs in their last 7 games. Boston is a -140 favorite and the total is 9.

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins

Carlos Carrasco is 11-8 with a 3.68 era for the Cleveland Indians. That’s not bad for a team that is 54-60 on the year. Carlos opened as about a -140 favorite on the road. Let’s find out why. For one, the Twins had a glimmer of hope for the Wild card a while back, but going 3-7 in their last 10 has pretty much closed the door on them. They trail KC by 12 games and aren’t really in the Wild Card hunt. Cleveland was eliminated long ago but appear to still be playing hard. They’ve won 6 of their last 10. Carrasco is also a road warrior with a 7-2 road record with a 2.49 era and a whip of .829. In his last 3 starts Carlos has gone 1-0 with a 1.04 era and an absurd whip of 0.346. Twins’ starter, Tom Milone, has fallen on hard times going 0-2 with a 7.98 era in his last 3 appearances.

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox

Not unless he improves on his recent performance. Sale is 10-7 on the year with a 3.47 era. But Sale has been roughed up a bit in his last few starts. After beating these same Cubs, Sale has had a string of disappointments. He gave up 4 runs on 11 hits to KC. He settled down in his next start and went 7 innings allowing 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings. Sale would like to forget his next 2 starts. Boston bombed him for 7 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings and Tampa also nailed Sale for 7 earned runs in 5 `1/3 innings. In his last start he gave up 5 hits and 2 runs to the Angels in 7 1/3 innings. You remember that Sale had a streak of 8 straight games with double digit strike out totals. He’s only had one game in his last 7 where he reached 10 K’s. And who was that against? The Cubs! In his single start against the Cubs this year in Wrigley, Sale held the Cubs to 6 hits and 1 run over 7 innings.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic

Toronto at New York

Toronto will be looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of New York when the clubs conclude a three game set at the Rogers Centre. Drew Hutchison toes the rubber for Gibbons' crew carrying a 11-2 record, 5.26 ERA to the mound. Hutchison trades pitches with Luis Severino (0-1, 2.45 ERA) making his third start for New York. The betting odds opened with the Blue Jays as a -$1.35 home favorite. Siding with a team off back-2-back home losses is cause to ratchet up the tension for a sports bettor. However, in this case, the numbers add up well enough to suggests that this is a losing run that is not likely to continue.

Hutchison off a solid 7 innings of 2 run ball last effort brings to the table a sparkling 9-1 home record with Jays 10-2 over the twelve starts. Hutchison has also been effective with a 9-1 team start record the last ten against a divsion opponent. A few more telling baseball betting stats leap out. Jays have a 6-0 streak going with Hutchison vs a team with a winning record. In the daylight, John Gibbons' crew is also having success with Hutchison winning 6-of-8 day games including 3-0 in front of the friendly crowd.

Arizona at Atlanta

Atlanta Braves are 1-13 in Shelby Miller's last fourteen outings. It's not entirely the righthander's fault. Miller has allowed two earned run or less in nine of those starts but Braves bats are supplying Miller with just 2.1 runs of support over the 14 games. Miller and the Braves are presently being offered around +$1.05 while the D-Backs at -$1.15 are expected to counter with Rubby De La Rosa ridding a 5-0 team start streak.

Cincinnati at Los Angeles

The L.A. Dodgers start Zack Greinkie when they conclude their four game set vs Cincinnati. Not the best news for the Reds. The L.A. righthander is undefeated in ten trips to the mound recording seven shutouts in those starts (8-2 TSR). Greinke is 6-1 with a miniscule 1.43 ERA in front of the friendly crowd (8-4 TSR), 5-0 in days games and sports a smart 14-3 team start record in Auguat. No surprise to see Dodgers pegged as hefty -$2.30 moneyline favorites. Note: Dodgers are 7-4 at home as -$2.20 chalk or higher costong backers -$310 at the betting window.

Steve's Screen Shot
By Steve Merril

Pirates @ Mets -- The Mets look like a solid play on Sunday afternoon, but after their offense made J.A. Happ and Charlie Morton look good, I’m a little hesitant, especially at the price of -165. New York’s Matt Harvey is in very good form, having allowed just 1 run in his last three starts while striking out 19 and walking none. However, Harvey was shelled by the Pirates in Pittsburgh back in May; he gave up 7 runs and six hits in four innings. Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke has some ugly numbers, but New York is only hitting .232 against left-handed starters. The Mets are 25-11 in day games, so they’ve been pretty good in games under the sun. The Mets or Under 7 (-110) are the only options for me in this game.

Diamondbacks @ Braves -- Rubby De La Rosa has made 23 starts for Arizona. He has allowed 4 runs or more in eleven of those outings. De La Rosa also has six outings where he’s allowed 1 earned run or less. So he is up and down to say the least. One of his bad outings came at home against the Braves on June 3rd when the righty allowed 7 runs and nine hits in five innings. Shelby Miller is winless in his last 15 starts, and a major reason for that is the fact that Atlanta scores just 2.5 runs per game when he’s on the mound. Atlanta between +100 and -105 has value considering how erratic De La Rosa has been.

Padres @ Rockies -- Ian Kennedy has allowed 25 home runs this season, and he’ll pitch in Coors Field on Sunday afternoon. That’s not a good combination. However, Kennedy is 6-4 with a 2.95 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 19 career starts versus the Rockies. In his last start in Coors Field last season, Kennedy only gave up 1 run and four hits in seven innings. But Kennedy’s poor numbers this season trump his career numbers in this spot. Colorado’s Chris Rusin is 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA in six home starts for the Rockies. The Padres are scoring 4.7 runs per game against southpaws, so Rusin will likely get roughed-up in this game. I expect another high-scoring game between the Padres and Rockies, so Over 11 (-115).

Indians @ Twins -- Sunday’s matchup between the Indians and Twins is a classic case of two pitchers heading in opposite directions. Tom Milone comes off the DL for Minnesota after allowing 15 runs and 20 hits in his last three starts. Carlos Carrasco is going the other way, having allowed 3 runs and seven hits in his last three starts while striking out 22 and only walking two. Overall, Carrasco has a 2.49 ERA in 11 road starts. Cleveland (-130) is the play in this game.
